Meiying's POV: I hope I catch the bus in time…!
Zooming past me, the bus seemed to say:
"Hasta never, Meiying!"
Sighing, I took a seat on the bench waiting for another bus to come pick me up. Looking forward to my new job, I tried to hold my head high. But, even though I tried to be cheerful, the memories of the past deflated my happy spirits. My boyfriend, Joshua, was supposed to be sitting with me now, giving me encouragement and lighting up my mood with a good joke. Instead, I was crying and very hungry, since I didn't have time to eat breakfast this morning. My stomach growled.
Meiying's POV: Thank God! A bus!
Running, I was able to catch the last seat on the bus. I plugged in my headphones and listened to my favorite music while I admired the scenery flying by. Soon, I could see New York in all its glory. Children ran with their backpacks and textbooks to a school building. Mothers walked past, occasionally carrying a baby.
Meiying's POV: Man, it was only months ago when I was a mother.
Wiping away a tear, I got off the bus and headed to my new job: a large company called "Professional Office Outfits". It was a very big building, and people were constantly coming in and out. Security were everywhere, as well as cameras in every corner. I approached the entrance. An officer stopped me.
???: Your name and reason why you are here?
Meiying: My name is Meiying and I have a job interview with the owner of this company.
???: Please follow me.
The security guard led me through three halls and one large lobby room where several people were sitting. The ceiling had three large chandeliers and the furniture was vintage style, making the room look very welcoming.
???: Right this way, Miss.
Meiying: Thank-
I stopped in my tracks and looked at the man in front of me. I blushed cherry red. The man had brown, straight hair, styled in the latest fashion, and cold, staring eyes. His suit was a limited edition, worth well above $3,000.
???: Take a seat. John, thank you for escorting her here. You may go.
John: Thank you.
???: Name please.
Meiying: Meiying Johnson.
???: You are divorced, I suppose.
(figets and clears throat)
???: I see you had a boutique in Miami. "Floral Designs". Very nice. How many years have you worked in the designing industry?
Meiying: Five years.
???: Age?
Meiying: 21, sir.
???: Call me Mr. Suzuki. Your desk is next to Ms. Beth.
Meiying: Thank you.
As I stood to leave I couldn't help but blush at the thought of having him as my boss. a second later, though, a thought passed my mind. How could I love another man when my beloved hasn't got his revenge? Just then, I got a phone call from the police department. It was Officer Smith, a police officer working on the case. I knew if he was calling me in the middle of my job interview, it had to be something urgent. Mumbling my apologies, I went out of the office and went to the bathroom to pick up the call.
I went to the bathroom. There was a girl there, fixing her makeup. I picked up the call quickly.
Meiying: Hello?
Officer Smith: Thanks for picking up. We have some news on the case.
Meiying: All ears.
???: Break is over in five minutes, Miss.
Meiying: Thanks. Yes, sir?
Officer Smith: We found out that your boyfriend was shot by a woman.
Meiying: What-
Officer Smith: There was one security camera which taped the scene. The hair was long, and the person had a figure of a woman. Her hair was brown. Also, there were two people. Both looking woman-like. The other one was a blonde.
Meiying: The only blonde person I know is Stephanie, my boyfriend's ex. I lost contact with her eleven months ago.
Officer Smith: Recap your words. Eleven months ago? Hello! She might be a suspect!
Meiying: Wow... can't believe I never thought of that. She used to hate Joshua for being with me... Man, I'm really dumb.
Officer Smith: I'll track her down.
???: The boss is coming! Let's go!
Meiying: Gotta go.
Officer Smith: I'll call you if anything happens.
I run out of the bathroom and go find Beth. Unexpectedly, she's the girl from the bathroom. Smiling, she waved. A group of girls stood next to me, eyes pierced to the door. Mr. Susuki walked in. The girls were red as tomatoes as they greeted him. His assistant was next to him... John! He greeted me and Beth with a smile and continued to walk behind his boss.
Mr. Susuki shot me a look.
Mr. Susuki: Come to my office in five minutes.
Meiying: Yes, sir.
A few minutes later, I was sitting at his desk as he arranged some papers. He took out a pencil and a paper, and then a paper containing some words.
Mr. Susuki: A lady came in yesterday and wanted to buy something to wear to work. She works at an office. Her requirements are on this paper. Make a design that suits her and that she would buy. 20 minutes.
With that, he resumed to his paperwork. I took a look. She wanted something simple, attractive, but acceptable for being in an office. Thinking, I quickly thought of a design. My pencil danced across the paper, creating a beautiful design for a dress. Open top, cute suit, and a plain color. I presented it to him.
Mr. Susuki: Not bad. Give it to Beth and tell her what fabrics you want. Remember, we are not in winter. Then give it to Angela who will fix the dress. She will know what to do. Ask her for a copy of the material.
Meiying: Ok, no problem.
Off I went. I picked out comfy but not suffocating, a bright but not a loud color,
and walked over to Angela, who was in the middle of a conversation.
Meiying: Hey, Angela? Boss said to make a copy of this material and to start working on the design.
Angela: Who are you to tell me what to do? Boss can tell me himself.
Meiying: He's busy. And he especially asked me to deliver the message and material. I'm just doing what he says.
Angela: Well, I don't want to do it now!
Meiying: Won't the boss get mad at you? I suggest you get to it.
Angela: I said I don't want to!
A sharp slap hit my face. I flipped back in shock and hit my head face down.
Shocked, I glared at her, my fist tightened, ready to strike. I was so angry that I wanted to throw a punch at her. Instead, in a low, angry voice, I told her to back off.
Meiying: Keep your hands to yourself! All I did was deliver a message! You didn't have to be so rude!
Angela: I'm the boss's girlfriend I can do whatever I want!
Meiying: I've seen him annoyed with you, not mesmerized by you!
Angela: You will pay for this!
With that, she picked up a broom and threw it face at me. Luckily, I caught it right in the nick of time. Suddenly, I heard a voice from in back of me.
Mr Susuki: Girls, stop fighting. You're old enough to know better. Angela did you review the material that I sent you?
Angela: This woman was preventing me! You have to fire her!
Meiying: Ummm what? You're the one who slapped me and now threw me a broom. Don't pretend to be all innocent.
Mr Susuki: Is this true Angela?
Angela: ...
Mr Susuki: You've got one more chance to prove yourself, Angela. If anything happens between you two again, one of you will be fired.
With that he stormed off, visibly not content that is most esteemed employee and his new employee were fighting. Angela yanked the material out of my hand and went over to her desk. Then, she resumed her conversation, like nothing had happened. Beth, on the other hand, was staring at me like I was an alien from outer space. I looked at her questionably, but she just shook her head and motioned that she was going to talk to me at break. Shrugging, I went back to my work. Before long, I realized that everyone except Angela's group was staring at me. Confused, I tried to ask what was wrong, but they just ignored me and went back to their work, occasionally staring at me now and then.
At break I asked Beth why she was staring at me - no, why was everyone staring at me.
Meiying: Hey Beth why was everyone staring at me like I was an alien from outer space?
Beth: The boss has never stood up for anyone. Before, he just let us get bullied and then he would talk to her privately. Or sometimes, he wouldn't even talk to her!
Meiying: So that means to say I'm special. So I guess I am an alien. That's wonderful.
Beth: What I'm saying is that I think he likes you. I mean that's what everyone thinks from the looks on their faces!
Meiying: I don't like anyone and I'm not planning to! There's only one person I loved in my life and I'm not going to love anyone else even if it's the president of the United States!
I saw people in the corner of my eye staring at me. Their face was blank. I knew someone was behind me, and I knew exactly who it was.
