My name is Pakhi. It means bird. Birds... they have two beautiful wings. With that, they can fly to any place their heart desires. But... what happens when they are being.. caged? What if they can't fly anymore? The god sure did grant them with a pair of beautiful wings... yet they are limited to do many things.
One day I thought of flying away from this place.. and away from this cruel world, with my brother. But we weren't gifted with wings. Nonetheless, today marks exactly 5 years since my brother and I decided to move away from our old, small, hometown. Where we have spent our 18 years, and now we have settled down in this unknown, big city. Where I have decided to start a fresh new life. My mother died not long after giving birth to us. Wait.. did I forget to say my brother is my twin, and my younger twin to be exact. Although he denies with his life and believes he is the older one. My father.. We never saw him nor heard of him, all these years. The only thing we know is that my brother looks like him. That's what grandma used to say. We don’t even know if he is still alive or not. It’s not that we care either. We never needed him. We grew up with our grandma. But sadly, she also passed away a few years ago. Now it's only me and my brother.
In this big city we have faced many hardships and challenges. But this much is nothing compared to what we have faced in our hometown.
"Earth to Pakhi!" Kate, my colleague snapped at me.
"Huh, what happened?" I asked.
she sighed then said, "the president called for you"
"Ok" I nodded and she gave me a gentle smile.
She's probably the only one who smiles at me and nicely greets me every day. Well, after getting promoted, only a year later I started working here, this doesn't look too good in everyone's eyes, does it?. Others think I had pulled some underlings to get here instead of acknowledging my hard work. Of course It does seem to be a big deal when you get promoted from just as a normal intern with barely work experience to be a personal secretary of the chairman.
Well, whatever! I have seen and heard enough things over these past two years that my ears have become numb. But not anymore.
I looked at the envelope and took a long slow breath in and out. There's no going back once I handed this in.
I took the envelope along with a few other files and headed towards the chairman's cabin. On my second knock, he told me to 'come in'. I walked in and placed the flies on the desk first then placed the envelope on top.
"What's this?" he asked, tilting his head a little.
I again slowly breathe in and out. To make sure not to mistake what I am about to state.
"It's a resignation letter, sir."
