Terrance

The Broken Window

It was a sunny day on February. Me and my friend, Enne, were playing catch the ball together outside infront of a neighbor's home.

"Pass it to me! What's taking you so long?"

I called out to Enne. He passed the ball to me after a few seconds. He threw the ball hard enough for me to fall down. I didn't catch it, but what I heard next gave me a panic.

* Crack! *

"..Huh...?"

"Oh no..."

Enne said as he walked up to me, he helped me up as I scratch the back of my head. I looked at the direction the noise came from.

( a broken window... )

"Oh man...Enne we broke the window.."

"I'm not blind man! I can see it clearly!"

"How're we gonna get it back..?"

"We're gonna go in, duh."

"Wha- Are you crazy!? We can't just enter a house like that, idiot!"

"Don't worry, besides, no one lived in here for years. I bet no one is even in here by now."

Enne told me as he walked up to the house's door. I followed.

"I'm opening the door, It's just on the second floor, everything'll be alright. Trust me, Terrance."

Enne entered the home carefree. I followed him to the inside. The first two steps I experienced in the home, it gave me anxiety.

I looked around and it was all dusty and dirty, cobwebs, everywhere. I could see many rats and insects running around. I feel disgusted.

I looked back at Enne, we were close to the stairs.

"I have a bad feeling about this, Enne."

"Hm? Don't worry, no one lives here."

Enne said as we climb the stairs. And as I tried to say something, we saw an old man holding our ball in his hand.

"Oh man! I didn't know someone was home!"

"Ah- We're sorry sir! Really sorry!"

"Oh no, it's alright, young boys."

The old man sat on the sofa. He offered us a seat. Me and Enne sat next to each other, anxiously.

"Were you two the ones who threw this ball?"

"It was an accid-"

"It was my fault, I threw the ball too hard, I'm sorry."

Enne spoke over me.

"...I didn't catch the ball, if I was able to catch it, then your window wouldn't be broken by now..."

The old man showed us a faint smile.

"It's alright boys. It was just an accident, I don't have any hard feelings towards you two. Just be careful next time you play."

"Yes sir...We're sorry!"

"Oh, there is no need to apologize, young man. Just go back to playing your game outside."

Me and Enne nodded at the old man. We went down the stairs and exited the home.

I look back at the house as me and Enne walk towards our spot. It makes me anxious, I feel like there's something out of place.

Coffee

Years passed. Me and Enne live together in an apartment. It's still quite close to our hometown. The old man moved out of the house, and now the home is vacant. But no one has moved into that home for a long time, it's all dusty and covered in rust.

Whenever I thought about that home, it would always give me a chilling feeling. I would always tell Enne about it, but I'm guessing he's tired of it.

It was 1pm in the afternoon. I was eating my lunch, while Enne feeds the cats. Enne's a good cook, he would always insist to eat outside though.

I finished my meal and walked over to Enne.

"Are you not hungry yet?"

"..I'm not gonna eat"

( I haven't seen him eat in a while. )

"Maybe I can buy us some soft drinks?"

"sure...thanks"

I walked over to the front door and waved at Enne.

I closed the door and walked away. I searched for a vending machine. I eventually found one...but it was empty and out of order. I searched for more but I'm guessing that was the only vending machine available in this neighborhood.

I didn't have any idea of what to do next. But no matter what I have to buy Enne a drink. I don't think he has eaten in a few days.

"...Ah, yes! Coffee!"

Enne hasn't drank any coffee yet. Maybe I could but him a cup.

I searched for a coffee shop, I found one after a few minutes. I entered the coffee shop.

"Good morning."

I nodded my head as I walk over to the counter.

"What would you like?"

I ordered a normal Latte. I wasn't thirsty anymore, so I figured to just buy one for Enne. After a few minutes, the Latte was ready and I took my order. I payed the money and thanked the woman on the counter.

She was really pretty, although she doesn't really smile. She doesn't look happy with her job.

I made my way back to the apartment. It was quite cold, but it's close to December anyway. I might catch a cold, I need to hurry home.

I made it to our room and greeted Enne with a smile.

"Hm? Why only one?"

"I wasn't thirsty anymore so I decided to just buy for you."

"That's..really kind of you."

"Of course."

I gave Enne the cup. It was warm, but his hands were warmer. I sat on the nearest seat, tired of walking. It took me a long time to reach the Coffee shop. My legs were exhausted, I've been walking for more than thirty minutes.

It suddenly went quiet.

My eyes were closed—I tried to open them to see what's going on. I couldn't, my eyelids were too heavy for me to even move. I couldn't feel my body, I couldn't hear anything.

Enne's muffled voice went through my ears. I instantly 'woke up'. I have gasping for air, I wasn't breathing.

I see Enne gripping on my shoulders.

"Oh man—Terrance...Calm down, take a deep breath."

I took a deep breath, I eventually calmed myself down. My head hurts, I looked back at Enne straight in the eyes.

"Terrance...have you taken your meds yet..?"

"...meds?"

A Pair Of Eyes

"Terrance...have you taken your meds yet..?"

"...meds?"

Enne sighed. He took out a bottle of pills out of the drawer next to us.

"Your meds. Don't tell me you forgot to take them this morning..."

"I... completely forgot."

"Terrance—you can't continue being like this."

"I know—I just keep forgetting to take them-"

Enne clicked his tongue as he looks down to the ground.

"....I'm sorry."

"No. I'll remind you to take them whenever you're done with your breakfast."

I felt bad for Enne. It's like I'm still a child...I don't want that.

"You don't...have to do that--"

"No. If you don't take your meds daily, this'll get worse."

Enne let out a soft sigh.

"I'll try my best.."

Enne picked up the cup of coffee I bought and took a small sip. I stood up and walked my way to the sink as I take the pills.

I can't swallow.

It went quiet in the house after that situation. I was tired, I headed to my room and sat on my bed. The temperature was not hot nor cold. It was okay, but at the same time I feel like something's wrong.

Something's off, out of place...I don't know what it is—but that doesn't matter. What matters more is...

...is someone watching me or not? This isn't the first time. I felt this feeling a few times. I never told Enne about it, I mean—what's the point if he's not gonna believe me anyway.

I checked out my window and looked at the other window across the road. I saw someone's head, faced straight towards my window..or me. His face seemed really familiar, but I can't quite to put a finger on it.

It creeped me out, now that I just found out why I was feeling like this. I want to tell Enne about this, but as I said. I just found out why I felt like this. I'm not fully sure if the person was actually watching me, staring at me, or just looking at a blank space. He was an old man anyway.

There's nothing wrong with spacing out, especially when you're old. But I noticed something odd about his face. His eyes were wide open...and His pupils were small. His eyes were staring right at me—eye to eye.

It creeped me out a little, but I just let it slide. I walked back at my bed and laid on my back. A big sigh escaped my lips as I close my eyes.

"Taking a nap already?"

I heard Enne's voice next to me. His voice was soft and his tone was gentle. Whenever he does that, It would always put me in ease.

"I'm tired..."

"I know. I just need to inform you that I might get home late. It's my boss's birthday, me and the others are gonna have dinner together tonight."

"...alright. But can you please go straight home after the dinner party or whatever?"

"Sure. I'll be leaving now."

"Alright.."

"Goodnight."

Enne pat my head. It made me feel soft bodied, but the feeling of being watched still lingered.
