The vast imagination of a person could create different dimensions. The fear and failures existing in life could create a massive explosion of emotions. Some people chose to hide inside what wasn’t visible to the naked eye. The bitterness of the past could trap someone behind walls and behind the shadows of everyone. Nobody knew what was happening behind the closed doors; from the silent cry and silent suffering due to the attack of sharp words from someone close or worse from a complete stranger. Faking a smile was much better; nobody would dare to question what was really happening deep down inside. Smile, just smile. Try to tell people how you feel inside; let out all your emotions and they would just end up judging you. “You’re over the top” they would say. Making everyone happy was an understatement; you were making them happy, but nobody ever dared to make you happy. They would pull you down when you were already feeling down; they would laugh at your appearance, but nobody would dare to laugh when you cracked a joke. Instead of making a plan with a group during a school project, you always plan for an escape. The atmosphere of being in a group, being in a crowd, brought chaos inside your head and you decided to shut the camaraderie they offered. You knew it was all just for a show because of your intelligence.
Acceptance is the only thing which Andy Spencer wants in his life. In his 28 years of existence, he had been through a lot of difficulties. Was life being unfair to him? He felt different from the rest. Most people had said unkind words to him like weird, freak, strange, and that his behavior was unusual. The list of accusations and speculations about him goes on. Andy was always caught off guard, unknowingly what to do or how to defend himself. Every time he managed to speak out, they would always brush him off. “Don’t dare lecture me, loser!” Those words revolved inside Andy’s head just like a planet revolving around the sun. The world is a beautiful place to live in but Andy was surrounded by monsters in human form.
“Sunset… Sunrise… Could you describe their colors? Could you explain the difference between the two?” Andy could still remember his request to his dear mother when he was just a kid. “Are you sure you’ll be fine son?” asked his mother who was obviously worried about him. He continued to pack his things and he took out his journal from the drawer of his study table. “I’ll be fine Mum. I appreciate that you’re worried about me but I’m already 28, I can manage myself.” He reached out to her for a hug and he kissed her forehead. Andy was the only one left with his parents when his older sister decided to settle down in Switzerland to be united with her Swiss husband. “I can’t believe that you still remember your request to me when you were just 6 years old. We always watch the sunrise and sunset since then but do you really want to do this?” tears were forming in his mother’s eyes. “Yes, I really want to do this. I may just end up regretting it if I'm still going to hold back.” Andy got so distracted packing his stuff that he didn’t notice his mother’s silent cry. “Mum? Are you crying?” he came closer to her, who was about to walk out of his room. “No, I’m not,” she lied while trying to hold back her tears.
“Mum, don’t lie to me. Amanda will pick me up at the airport. I assure you, I’ll be fine.” Her silence made Andy’s heart a bit sad. She knew how Andy struggled since he was a kid and she just couldn’t believe that he decided to travel alone for the first time.
“I have an idea, Andy.” The eagerness of his mother never fails to amuse him. She would always come up with something whenever he decides to jump out of his comfort zone.
“What is it?” Andy asked.
“Why don’t you ask Sebastian to go with you? He likes traveling and maybe he would agree to come with you. What do you think?”
“Oh, NO! Not Sebastian. That lad is as busy as the ants and we will have an expansion in England soon. He won’t agree with it when their business is at stake.”
“Have you tried asking him though?” Emilia was persistent.
“I know my best friend, Mum. I don’t have to ask him when I already know what his answer would be. Besides, Mr. Douglas just woke up from being comatose. I don’t really think that Sebastian will take a break this time.” She let out a heavy sigh and hugged him the way she used to hug him whenever he was scared.
“Alright, you win this time! I hope Mr. Douglas will be able to fully recover soon. Just don’t forget to give me an update. Let me know when you arrive and when you're already with your sister. Be careful, son.” Emilia smiled as she caressed Andy's face.
“No worries, I’ll give you an update whenever I can. Amanda had been nagging me. She kept on saying that she’s excited to see me.”
“Ha! You know how your sister is. She’s quite a nagger and sometimes cranky but she’s really thoughtful. Just be patient with her.”
“I will, Mum. I love you both.”
Andy was able to press the button to soften his mother’s heart. He felt his mum’s love and support through the tenderness of her warm embrace. “I can’t believe you’re leaving us now, son.” Andy’s mum sobbed while handing him a knitted scarf. “Here, take this. I made it when I found out about your plan,” she said. “Mum, is this the reason why you’ve been sleeping late?” Andy asked with a long face. “Aren’t you happy about it? Is it the color? I checked the weather forecast. It’s going to be cold in Switzerland when you arrive.”
“I like it but you don’t really have to make this for me. I don’t like it when you’re lacking sleep because of me,” Andy answered. “I’ll do anything for you and you know that,” Emilia assured, looking at Andy in tears.
“I know Mum and I really appreciate it, thank you so much! Will you please stop crying now? I’m coming back soon,” Andy said, comforting his mum.
“I’m not used to it, Andy. You’re going out of your comfort zone for the first time and it scares me. The world out there is different, you might get lost. People might take advantage of your kindness again. Remember what happened to you when you were still in middle school?”
Andy stopped packing his clothes and he suddenly sat on his bed. He rubbed the temple of his head while saying, “How can I forget? But I want to move forward now; I want to go on with my life. I want to let go of the past. All my life I had been hiding, I had been stuck inside the dark box. I’m also scared, to be honest but nothing will happen if I just keep on dwelling on it. My past is full of darkness and fears. I’ve seen a little light of hope this time and I want to grab it. Besides, I’m not a kid anymore.”
“Alright, I understand. You’re right, son, you’ve been hiding since you were a kid. I can’t believe you’ve pressed into maturity now. It pains my heart to see you go but if it will help you gain your self-esteem, I will support you. Can I give you a hug again before you go?” She asked while reaching out to Andy. He nodded and came closer to Emilia. She wrapped him in her arms tightly. “I will miss you!” he said. “I will miss you more, son. Now, finish your packing before your father comes to pick you up,” she answered in relief.
“Alright. I got to go,” Andy replied. A whirlwind of emotion struck her, worried of what might happen to Andy while he was out in the world, alone, with no one around him to help him if something happened.
Andy arrived at the airport an hour before his flight schedule. His Dad came closer to him, wrapping him in his arms. Andy looked at him in surprise when his embrace got a little tighter. “Dad, you’re suffocating me,” Andy complained while trying to remove his Dad’s arms. “Oh, please forgive this old man. I just couldn’t bear seeing you like this. You’re really an adult now, Andy,” he said with teary eyes.
“Oh come on! It’s not like I’m going on the other side of the world.”
“Well, this is the first time that you’ll be away for too long. Also, the fact that you’re traveling alone, it’s like a pill I couldn’t swallow properly,” his Dad replied. He looked at Andy anxiously, still trying to figure out why he decided to leave but he couldn’t read his mind.
“You’re just like, Mum. No wonder, you’re both madly in love with each other. Your way of thinking is always synchronized in a way I couldn’t describe.” Andy stared at his Dad’s face, he studied it closely and noticed the wrinkles on his forehead as he frowned.
“Well, what can I say? You’re our only son. We’re trying our best to keep our sanity under control,” Jon took out a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe his eyes. “I hope you’ll be fine, I really hope that. Give me a call or just let your Mum know that you’re safe. As long as you’re safe, son. We can die peacefully.”
“Please, don’t say that. I’ll be fine, Dad. I’ve planned this for so long and I really want to do this. I’ll be back after a month,” Andy replied while giving his Dad a quick embrace.
“Promise me you’ll come back alive?”
“Of course I will! I got to go. I’ll give you updates when I arrive there.”
“Alright. I may not say this more often but please always remember that we love you so much.”
“I love you too, Dad. Mum too.”
Jon wiped his tears and sighed when Andy left. He couldn’t accept that Andy made a decision without discussing it with them for the first time. Andy used to ask their opinion when it comes to decision making. Somehow, at some point, he felt a bit of relief seeing Andy taking one step at a time in adulthood. Andy looked back and waved goodbye to his Dad, keeping his tears from falling, doing his best to hide his emotions. But Andy was actually scared.
He was on the verge of crying when he went inside the toilet. When he splashed water into his face, he felt the freezing water. Heavy breathing, cold sweats, and numbed hands; anxiety attack made Andy doubt himself if he could really travel alone. He composed himself and went to the check-in counter but his vision started to blur when he caught sight of the crowd inside the airport. The chattering voices of people made Andy subconsciously drop his backpack on the floor then someone suddenly picks it up for him.
“Here, you dropped this,” a worried voice said. Andy saw a figure handing the backpack to him.
“Huh?” Andy answered, his vision’s still blurry, seeing only black and white. “Are you alright? You look pale. I think you should take a seat first. Come with me, I’ll take you to the nearest waiting area.” She guided Andy into the nearest seat so he could recover from the overwhelming feeling of being surrounded by the crowd. After drinking a bottle of water, Andy looked at her and said, “I hate crowds, I don’t like being surrounded by too many people. I always panic and sometimes, when it gets too much, I pass out too.”
“I didn’t ask but thank you for telling me. It must be hard dealing with that all the time,” she answered while looking at Andy.
“Indeed it is and I should be the one thanking you. Thank you for helping me when nobody did,” he said.
“No problem. I’m sure other people will do the same. I was nearby when you suddenly dropped your backpack. I’m just wondering if you are traveling alone?” she asked out of curiosity.
“Maybe, are you?” Andy answered with a bit of hesitation.
“Yes, I am. I’m actually going to Switzerland to meet my Mum,” she ecstatically shared. Andy looked at her in surprise. “Oh. Why did you tell me? You shouldn’t tell people you’re traveling alone for your safety.”
“You also did though. Based on your aura and style, I’m quite confident you’re alone ,” she protested, staring at Andy with her eyes full of judgement.
“I said maybe. It’s quite an unclear answer rather than a yes or a no. You even said that you’re going to Switzerland to meet your mum. What if I’m a bad guy?” Andy said, stating the facts.
“Well, if you’re a bad guy, at least, I still helped you. You should be grateful!"
“That’s a good point. But please, don’t give out too much information to someone you barely know or even to strangers. You could save yourself from any harm.”
“Sure, I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Well, I’m going now. Thanks again for your help.”
“Wait, what’s your name? I’m...
“No, please. Don’t tell me your name. It’s much better that we don’t know each other’s name. ‘Till next time.”
“Hey! Wait!! I need to know your name! Right, I’ll just call you... Red, yes! Red guy since you’re wearing a red shirt.”
Andy left without looking back, ignoring her words. He left her with a cloud of confusion as to why he doesn’t want to tell her his name. “You start to care the moment you know someone’s name. I hope I’m doing the right thing.”
“Window seat please,” Andy said at the counter. The woman in her 50’s stared at him while fixing her eyeglasses. “Let me check it for you, young man,” she said. “Please do, thank you,” Andy answered. “You know what, when I was your age, I always wanted to sit by the window as well. It’s mesmerizing when you see the sunset; you better check it out,” she was feeling proud of her suggestion.
“What about the sunrise? Does it look the same as the sunset?” Andy asked in curiosity. The old woman gasped and looked at Andy in astonishment. “Ehhh? Sunrise? Everybody loves sunsets! And you’ll be too tired to even see the sunrise; you’d probably fall asleep and snore even before the sun comes out. Ha! Bad timing, I’m gonna apologize to you young man, tssskk, no more window seats. Look!” The old woman showed the monitor to Andy, she felt a bit sad when Andy let out a heavy sigh.
“Expecting a window seat huh? Okay, come here. I’ll tell you a secret,” she said. Andy came closer to the counter and he was surprised to hear what she whispered in his ear. “What? Is that even allowed?” he asked. “Tricky and risky but worth it if you get a window seat, aye?” she answered while tapping the computer keyboard. “Hmmm, yeah, you got a point. But...” Andy answered with hesitation. The old woman raised her eyebrow to Andy and looked at him sternly. “Okay, I’ll try it then,” he said. “You got nothing to lose, young man. Just don’t tell anyone,” she said while winking at him. “Thank you,” Andy said. “No problem and enjoy your trip oh!” she responded. “Next please!”
Andy boarded his flight with cold sweats and numb hands as he saw the people inside the plane, they were busy putting their luggage inside the overhead bin. He stared at his plane ticket and walked closely to his seat. “I hate the aisle seat,” he muttered. Andy had no choice so he sat on his designated seat. He closed his eyes for a bit then decided to check his phone. He received loads of messages from his mother who misses him so much. He sent a message to her to calm her anxiety of being far away from him. Andy was sorting out his backpack when an old man came to sit on the window seat. “Hi!” the old man greeted him with a smile. “Hi!” Andy answered. He felt a little awkward, he never liked conversations from strangers and he hated socializing with people whom he barely knew. “Umm, excuse me. If you don’t mind, can we switch seats?” Andy asked, a bit nervous.
“Sorry kid, as much as I want to, I can’t,” the man said. “But why?” Andy asked. “Why? You tell me kid. Why do you want to switch seats with me? I paid for this seat!” he answered, annoyed. “I’m sorry Sir, well, you know... Ugh, this is really embarrassing,” Andy said while shaking his head. “What’s embarrassing, huh?” the man replied. “So, this is where you are. I have been looking for you! Excuse me, Sir. Would you like to switch seats with me instead?” the woman sitting in front of them said. Andy spaced out when he realized that it was the woman he met inside the airport. The woman without a name for Andy and he didn’t even show a slight interest to get to know her name. “Hey! Fancy seeing you here,” Andy greeted her, playing along with her idea. “Oh, you must be on your honeymoon!” the man said. “Sorry, it’s just a misunderstanding,” Andy responded. “It’s alright kid; I apologize if I’m a bit harsh a while ago,” he said then he looked at the woman, “Come here dear!”
“Oh, thank you so much. We really appreciate it, Sir,” she responded joyfully while getting out of her seat. “Well, it’s not a good idea to separate a couple during their honeymoon. Please sit with your husband! I still remember when my daughter got married. Ahh, good old days,” he remarked, then he smiled at them. He sat on the window seat where the woman used to sit.
“Go, move there now,” she whispered to Andy. “Are you sure about this? Maybe you want to sit here too?” he asked out of curiosity. “It’s okay. All my life I had been sitting near the window. It won’t hurt to let you try it.”
“Thank you. It means a lot to me, thanks again.”
“No problem. I hope you don’t mind me sitting here next to you,”
“Of course not, after what happened, I doubt it. I’ll treat you to a meal because you saved me a lot of times.”
“You don’t have to do that but I also appreciate it. It’s going to be fun, I guess,”
“Fun? What do you mean fun?”
“Umm, nothing,”
She smiled at him. Andy smiled back then he felt a sudden tinge of pain inside his heart; an uneasy feeling which made his uncertainties blurry when it comes to women. “Calm down, foolish heart. Avoid eye contact.” After a failed relationship in the past, Andy built his walls higher and stronger. He locked his heart from the possibilities of falling in love again. He wanted to focus on reaching his goals this time because there was once someone in his life whom he made the center of his universe. She helped Andy build his empire of self-esteem when he was a loner who prefers to be with his books rather than socialize with other people. Unfortunately, she was also the reason why Andy has difficulties in trusting people again. Andy’s empire which they built together was damaged and destroyed when she chose to cheat on him; nothing was left to Andy except the ashes of hope that someday, he could still build his empire even if he has to rebuild it all by himself.
“Please let me go! I want to go home,” Andy cried. “You can go home if you can find the exit door, loser! If you can‘t find it, then you‘ll be stuck in this room. Let‘s go boys, before anyone sees us!”
“Nooo, please! Let me come with you. I‘m scared, it‘s so dark in here!” Andy cried, begging.
“See you in the morning, loser!” Andy cried so much saying, “Noooo! Please! Don‘t close the door!”
But it‘s too late for Andy, the bullies closed the door and he was left alone and panting. Catching his breathing, struggling for his life. The dark room has no windows; it used to be a recording room and could only be opened from the outside. Andy fell on the ground, groaning in pain as he hit his arm on a pile of pallets.
“Ouuuccchhh, help! Please help me! I can‘t breathe! Ugghhh!” Andy screamed while crying. He reached out for an object and used his remaining energy to throw it so he could find his way out. He heard a sound not far from him and he tried to walk towards its direction. As he was walking, he heard a voice from the outside. “Andy! Where are you?” Though struggling, Andy was able to fasten up his pace towards the door. “I‘m here! Please open the door! Please! I can‘t breathe and my arm,” he sobbed. Suddenly, Andy saw a glimpse of light a few meters away from where he was standing.
Andy was awakened from his worst nightmare, panting and sweating; his sweat was cold. “Hey! Are you alright?” he heard a woman‘s voice. Slowly, he opened his eyes and answered, “Yeah, I‘m alright,” he lied, then he wiped his sweats with his hand and took his bag under the seat. “It must be a bad dream? Here, I have water and I also have tissue. It will help you,” she said while handing Andy a bottle of water and a pack of tissue. “A bad dream indeed, thank you for waking me up and for these too.” She smiled. “Sure, I’m happy to help.”
Andy was able to quench his thirst and he tried to calm himself. A bit confused, he kept on wondering why he has been having nightmares from his past. “I didn‘t mean to be nosy but I got nervous when you were saying something in your sleep. I was a bit hesitant to wake you up but . . .” she said. Andy gazed at her, feeling anxious about what she was saying. “No, it‘s fine. You just did what you needed to do. I‘d probably do the same thing if you‘re in my place,” he said.
“Well, yeah, okay,” she responded shyly.
“If you don‘t mind me asking, what was I saying while I was asleep?” Andy asked.
“Umm, it wasn‘t clear but you were asking for help,” she answered.
“Well, it‘s quite embarrassing. I‘m so ashamed of myself right now,” Andy said while turning his gaze to the window on his left.
“No worries, I woke you up before you started screaming. It‘s more embarrassing if everyone in this flight witnessed it,” she chuckled. Andy laughed. It was the first time that he laughed with a complete stranger. “You got me on that. Thanks again.”
“My pleasure,” she replied. “Wow! It’s amazing. I wonder if the sunset looks the same in all places,” she added. “I’m wondering that too,” Andy answered while studying the colors outside the window. “Does it look the same? Sunset and sunrise?” Andy continued while looking at her. Their eyes met for a while then Andy suddenly turned his head. He kept on looking outside then she answered, “They actually look almost the same but the feeling could be different. They used to say that sunset is like a beautiful goodbye while sunrise is a hopeful tomorrow. Either way, it’s still sad and painful when you’re watching it all by yourself.”
“I think you’re right. It’s the way you feel while you’re watching it. What color is that anyway?” Andy asked while pointing at the window. She looked at him, a bit surprised by his question but she didn’t mind it at all. “That’s orange and I think that’s a mixture of red, orange and yellow. It’s mostly orange and dark orange,” she said then smiled at him.
“That’s so cool. I’ll try to draw it before it’s gone.” Andy took out his sketchbook and oil pastel set then he started to draw. His strokes were neat and quick, the sunset drawing came out handy like he was a professional painter.
“That was fast. I’m impressed, it’s really great!” she declared.
“It’s just a hobby I used to be so passionate about when I was still in middle school,” he said.
“Why? What happened?” she asked. Her eyes glimmered in excitement but Andy refused to answer her question.
“It’s a long story and I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Well, what can I say; you don’t even want to know my name to begin with.”
“I’m sorry; I just think it’s for the best. Nothing personal, it’s just me. I have nothing against you either. You seemed like a nice girl and different from the girls I’ve met before but we’re still both strangers to each other. Don’t trust people so easily.”
The smile on her face disappeared and they never spoke to each other again. After some time, the people inside the plane started to sort out their things when they heard an announcement from the pilot, “Passengers, please fasten your seatbelt and prepare for landing.” . Andy started to prepare his belongings as well when he noticed something odd; the smile on the woman’s face faded away and her eyes showed a torment of sadness. Andy felt like he was responsible for it so he tried to talk to her casually. “Looks like you’ll see your mother soon,” he said but she didn’t answer. “So, what’s your plan after seeing her?” he added. She looked at him, straight in his eyes and said, “It’s none of your business!” She wore her headphones and started listening to music. “Hey, I’m sorry. I’m sorry if I offended you with what I have said. I still appreciate your help though,” Andy acknowledged.
“I can’t hear you! Never mind!” she yelled. Andy’s chest felt heavy. He doesn’t like making other people sad, may it be intentionally or unintentionally. He knows exactly how difficult it is to handle someone you just hurt.
The people started to get up one by one, queuing on the aisle then she suddenly stood up to go on the aisle as well. Andy looked at her from a distance, with his guilty feeling weighing in his chest. “Hey, I’m sorry!” he called out for her. She stared at Andy then feigned a smile and gestured a thumbs up. “Wait, is she really listening to music?” Unsure about it, Andy came closer to her and checked her headphones. “Cool, so is this how you escape a conversation?” Andy asked, sarcastic. “Hey, give me that!” she cried out. “You know what; if you feel uneasy about me, just let me get off this plane with peace of mind. I’m not trying to be nice to you or whatsoever, I’m just doing what I think is right and that’s helping and being kind to others.”
“I’m sorry, okay? If I need to apologize over and over again, I’ll do it. I’d rather see you smiling while getting off this plane than see you like this. If you want your peace of mind, then forgive me first.”
“Ugghhh, you’re irritating me!” she bellowed. “You’ll forgive me or I’ll leave with this?” Andy said while holding the headphones tightly, blackmailing her.
“Fine, I’ll forgive you. Now, give me that back!”
“Good then. Here you go!”
She was about to get off the plane when she heard a man’s voice behind her. “Andy! Man, how long has it been?” She looked back and saw Andy shaking hands with the pilot. “Carlos, I didn’t know you’re the pilot,” Andy answered. Her eyes widened when she heard his name; she suddenly turned away and left when she saw Andy looking at her. “She’s acting weird.” Andy turned his gaze to Carlos, “Well, this is where you’ll see me if the Douglas family doesn’t have any overseas trip,” Carlos declared. “Why are you alone anyway? I’m not used to seeing you alone; it’s very unlikely since you’re always with Sebastian wherever you go.”
“I’m just getting out of my comfort zone, that’s all,” Andy confessed.
“Well, that’s something new. Be safe then and stay out of trouble, man. Sebastian isn’t here with you, if you know what I mean.”
“Thanks for that! Yeah, I’ll try not to. See you around, Carlos!”
“Enjoy your trip!”
Carlos leaves and Andy gets off the plane. He searched the place for her but he couldn’t find her anymore. “Maybe she’s with her mother now.” So, Andy kept on walking until he reached the arrival area. From a distance, he saw his sister and brother in law while they were holding a big placard, “Willkommen Andy!” they both shouted as soon as they saw Andy coming towards their direction.
“You always like to embarrass me!” Andy complained while hugging her sister. “I thought you got used to it now, silly! Again, welcome to Switzerland little brother!” Amanda proclaimed. “Hey, stop teasing your brother, surely he’s tired. Let’s go home first,” Carter said while getting Andy’s luggage.
Andy left out a sigh and started to think about her whereabouts. “I hope she’s somewhere safe.”
“Jewel!” called the man behind her. She turned around, and her eyes widened upon seeing a familiar face.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“Jewel, I apologize if I startled you, but you have to be careful!”
“Please stop mentioning my name and just tell me why you’re here,” Jewel complained, desperate for his answer.
“But you’re using that name now.”
“I know Gilbert, but nobody knows about it yet.”
“Alright, I apologize for mentioning it. Well, your father sent out his men to search for you. I’m sure the first place they will look out for is the airport.”
“But why would he do that? I thought I’m already free the moment I agree to what he wants. I finished everything before leaving the lab.”
“Your father loves competition, don’t ever forget that. The more you resist, the more he’s willing to use his assets to hunt you down. The winner takes it all, and he always wants to be the winner.”
“I’m such a fool to believe his words!” Intense anger covered Jewel’s body as she screamed. “I’ll meet my mother first, then I’ll think of a plan to avoid his men.”
“Calm down, Jewel! Don’t make a scene! With the current situation, it’s too dangerous. We don’t want any media to get involved or it would be difficult for you to escape. As of now, go to the nearest exit. My men are out there waiting for you. I have a plan.”
“But my mother is waiting for me, Gilbert. I want to see her!” Jewel was breathing heavily as she searched her bag for her phone.
“I know. But you have to be safe first. Look at me, Jewel! Hey, listen! I’ll go meet your mother and I’ll also get your luggage. You’ll be staying in one of my mountain lodges for now; you’ll meet your mother there.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“Because you have no choice right now and you only have 20 minutes left to make a choice. Your safety first, it’s a must.”
“You know what Gilbert; I really hate it when someone can't stay out of anyone’s business! I’m not asking for your help! What matters to me right now is my mother’s safety.”
“I’m not doing this for you, Jewel.”
“So why would you risk your life to help me then?”
“It looks like someone couldn’t stay out of anyone’s business too! Just do what I say if you don’t want Theodore’s men to drag you back to The Base.”
“I’ll keep you on track, Gilbert. If only my mother isn't waiting for me. . .”
“Cut the crap, Jewel, and GO! Go now, don’t dare look back!”
Jewel ran while tears formed in the corner of her eyes. She went to the nearest exit while Gilbert went in the opposite direction. Her heart was racing inside her chest and knowing about the current situation, it made her weak on her knees. She couldn’t believe that her father is searching for her after all the sacrifices and pain she has to go through. All she wanted was her freedom; she thought she was already free but she felt like an injured bird being lured back into the trap. She was hoping not to fall into the trap again. Her father has always been harsh on her. He was guiding and disciplining her at a young age; showing no mercy whenever she makes mistakes.
“Why do you have to lock me up, dad?” Little Jewel asked. “I’m scared, it’s so dark in here and I’m all alone.”
“Because I love you so much, my princess. You have to be here for a while. Daddy will open the door for you later.”
“But what if there’s a monster?”
“Gilbert will be outside; he will guard your door while you reflect on your mistakes.”
“But I didn’t mean to do it, dad. Angie runs faster, that's why she won the race. I still won second place though. Please forgive me, dad. I’ll do my best next time,” Jewel sobbed.
“Chances don’t come twice, sweetie. There’s no next time.”
“Do you really love me, dad? Why do you have to do this?”
“Of course, I do. But always remember this, love hurts, it always does. If it doesn’t hurt, it isn’t love.”
Jewel escaped to forget her life with her family except for someone who showed her what real love is, her mother. Her mother could be feisty sometimes but she has a soft heart for her children. Jewel was almost at the exit when a suspicious guy started following her. She doubled her pace so he wouldn’t catch up with her. Jewel ran to the exit, the guy opened the gate when he recognized her face with the help of a picture in his hand. She was catching her breath when she was already out. She took out a bottle of water from her backpack for a drink when a vibration from her jean’s pocket startled her and a cloud of hesitations covered her mind upon seeing an unregistered number. But her instinct moved her to press the answer button.
“Are you out now?”
“Gilbert?”
“Yeah, it’s me. I assumed you’re already out?”
“Yes, I am. But there was someone out there who started following me when I was near the exit.”
“I already told you, you’re not safe in the airport. A black van will stop in front of you 5 minutes from now. Don’t look back when you see it.”
“Okay, cool because I’m feeling so tired now. How did you know my number anyway? I haven’t given it to anyone.”
“How? One word, connection.”
Gilbert hung up and a black van suddenly appeared in front of her. She didn’t look back while getting inside of it as instructed. She sat near the window, turning her sight outside with a clench fist. She was worried and scared for her mother‘s safety. She‘s willing to do anything for the sake of her mother until her last breath. She let out a sigh then she saw a glimpse of a fascinating view which made her heart skip a beat.

“Are these all you got?” Amanda asked her brother. She closed the trunk and turned to Andy. “You‘re such a light traveler,” she said. Andy opened the car‘s door.
“You know me. I hate packing and unpacking.”
“If you‘re that lazy, you better look for someone who would love to pack and unpack for you.”
“Just because I hate doing it doesn‘t mean that I‘m not going to do it.”
“That‘s only a suggestion and you‘ve been single for ages. When will you even look for someone to share your happiness with?”
“I‘m not rushing things to happen, you know. You don‘t force relationships, you just let it happen.”
“Yeah, just let things fall on your feet," Carter declared. "But to be honest with you, once you encounter it, you‘ll be eager to grasp it even if you don‘t really understand it at first.”
“Exactly! Take it from the expert, Andy. Just look at us now, we‘re happily married because we made it happen. It‘s just a matter of choice, you have your choices if you‘ll let it in or you‘ll let it pass by you,” she added.
“I’ve already learned my lesson after what happened to me and Stacey, you know about it. The name isn't taboo so I'll mention it. I just can’t trust anyone right now.” Andy didn‘t say much but what he expressed made them silent for a while and then they changed the subject.
It wasn’t a long journey since Carter grew up in the place; he knows the routes too well. They reached their home just in time for dinner prepared by Amanda’s in-laws who were busy in the kitchen. Carter's mother insisted she wanted to cook for them as a simple gesture to welcome Andy.
“How’s the journey, Andy? I heard this is your first time traveling alone?” Carter’s Dad asked.
“It’s quite alright, I survived. Though I had panic attacks, I was able to cope up. I’m grateful that someone never hesitated to help me, she saved me. Not just once but twice.” Andy’s eyes glimmered as he shared what happened.
“Oh! What an elegant person! I’m sure her parents raised her well,” Carter’s mother stated, impressed.
“I think so too,” Andy answered.
“What’s her name? We should invite her for a meal sometime,” Amanda suggested.
“But I don’t know her name,” Andy confessed.
“That’s a shame, why didn't you ask for her name?” Carter asked.
“It’s a long story and I don’t think you’ll understand,” Andy sighed as he finished his food.
“Don’t miss the chance the next time you bump into her, kid. Chances don’t come twice,” Emil said. His wife glared at her. “What? I’m just saying what my previous employer used to say,” he added. Carter was about to say something when Amanda touched his hand and he looked at her in confusion. “Later,” Amanda whispered.
After a delicious dinner together; they waved goodbye to Carter’s parents since they live in a different town. Carter has gone to finish a report in the study room while Andy and Amanda decide to stay for a cup of coffee. Andy volunteered to do the dishes.
“What is it like living with Carter?” Andy asked.
“It‘s fun,” Amanda replied. She studied Andy‘s face and his curiosity made her laugh. “How come it‘s fun?”
“Well, we’re the exact opposite. I’m a morning person while he's nocturnal. I hate hot weather while he loves it.”
Andy shook his head. “But you still love him anyway. Who would even think of moving here without prior notice to everyone?”
“That’s right, I love him. I hope he feels the same. It’s quite difficult at first; our marriage is like a roller coaster ride. Sometimes it‘s fun, most of the time, it‘s not. I made a lot of adjustments. Well, we both did anyway.” Amanda’s face changed when she took a sip of her coffee. ”Ugghhh, that‘s disgusting. I don‘t really like it when my coffee gets cold. You see? Just like this coffee, I‘ll throw this right away but Carter will still drink this. He thinks it’s such a waste to be thrown away.”
"He has a point though, you shouldn‘t waste a thing. Just heat it up in the microwave,” Andy suggested.
“Excuse me? Are you taking his side now? How dare you, I‘m your sister!” she responded.
“I‘m not taking any side, I‘m just stating facts,” Andy declared with a smirk.
“You‘re just like Carter, you‘re always on the safe side when you answer.” Andy laughed.
“Looks like you found your nemesis,” he teased.
“There‘s an ambiguous feeling of being ecstatic when it comes to romance but once you know the person, your views about him will change.”
“That‘s true, it must be hard for you when you‘re both lawyers though I‘m excited to witness an argument and imagine I’m in a court hearing.”
“Just wait and you’ll see more of it.”
Amanda took the cup of coffee into the kitchen and when she was just about to throw it, Andy declared his protest. “Don’t you dare!” he shouted. “Don’t do that, just give it to me. I’ll have it without a doubt.”
“Carter? Is that you?” Amanda said, sarcastically. “I can’t believe it; my baby brother is turning into a real man now. Alright then, suit yourself and feel at home. Here, you can have it. I’ll be staying in the study room with Carter. If you need anything, just knock three times.”
“As if I’ll do that,” Andy answered while smiling.
“Whatever. Have fun with the washing the dishes!” Amanda said then she was gone.
Andy was left all alone in the kitchen; his head was occupied by the presence of the person he met in the airport. He wasn’t sure why he kept thinking of her. He doesn’t even know her name so why does he bother thinking about her? There’s a small window just above the kitchen sink, Andy takes a peek outside of the window while washing the dishes. The area where his sister lives isn’t crowded and most of the houses in the neighborhood don’t have fences or gates. “Is it really safe to live here?”
“What are you looking at?” a deep voice behind Andy asked.
“Gosh! Man! You startled me! I almost broke this cup.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to do that. I just want a glass of water.” Carter answered, then he laughed. “If you could only see yourself, I bet you’ll laugh too.”
“Please don’t do that again, I almost fainted.”
“I promise not to startle you again. But why do you keep on looking outside? Is there something bothering you?”
“Is it really safe living here? I noticed you don’t have fences or gates here.”
Carter peeks outside of the window. “See that man watering his plants?”
“Yeah and why does he water the plants at this time?”
“His wife passed away weeks ago. He’s doing his best to make himself occupied so he doesn’t think about her more often. He used to ask the same question but as time went by, he realized that you don’t have to have fences or gates to feel protected. As long as you’re with the people you love, you’ll always feel protected.”
“That’s sad and it makes sense to me. Maybe I’ll get used to it too. What’s his name by the way?”
“Alfonso. He’s a retired businessman. You can visit him sometime.”
“Eh? I don’t really talk to people. I feel awkward starting a conversation with strangers.”
Carter patted Andy’s back. “Just try it for once. You’ve got nothing to lose.”
“Do you think I can do it alone?” Andy asks, biting his lip; he does it when he is nervous.
“You survived traveling alone. I’m sure you’ll be able to do it soon.”
“I hope so but I’m not rushing it. Are there any mountain camps here? Do they still offer skiing?”
“There’s a lot here but there’s one I know a few kilometers away from here. Why? Are you planning to go skiing?”
“Well, I want to but my sister may not approve of it. My family restricts me from doing any activities all by myself.”
“I understand how badly they wanted to protect you but sometimes it’s over the top. You’re not a kid anymore. Go have fun! I’ll contact Ben; he’s one of my trusted clients. He can take you there.”
“What about my sister? She’ll get mad at me if I keep this a secret.”
“Don’t worry; I’ll mention it to Amanda later.”
“Thank you, I owe you this one.”

Andy was scribbling on the table, he felt tension when his box of oil pastels fell over and rolled in a different direction. "What’s going on? His sister asked.
“I’m such a mess,“ he mumbled.
Amanda picked up the pieces on the floor and handed them to his brother. “It won’t be easy and it takes time to recover your peace of mind when all you ever wanted from the start was to be happy with the person. If you’re still thinking about . . .”
“No, I’m not thinking about it anymore.”
“I’m not even finished.”
“I know exactly what you’re going to say. I’ve heard enough of it from other people.”
“You sounded upset.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to. I shouldn’t take it out on you.” Andy apologized sincerely.
“Alright, be careful next time. It might cause you trouble and it’s hard to find someone who will understand where you’re coming from. I’m always here anytime in case you want to talk about what’s bothering you right now.” The whole room lit up when Amanda opened the curtains. The rays of sunlight reflected on the mirror hanging on the wall near Amanda’s room. “I assume a bit of sunlight won’t hurt you,” she said while turning her heels away.
“Wait, I’ll tell you something but promise me first. Promise that you’ll never laugh or judge me.”
“Yeah, sure. I promise I won’t laugh or judge you. What is it? Spill the beans now.”
“I met someone in the airport on my way here. I don’t know why it’s bothering me. I couldn’t get her out of my head.”
“Oh, sounds interesting. This is going to be fun! Tell me more about it.” Amanda pulled a chair and sat in front of him while Andy rubbed his temples.
“You’re the worst, you promised you won't laugh!” he said, annoyed.
“I’m not judging or laughing at you. I just want to hear more about it," she replied while trying to be serious. "Is she the one who helped you out when you had you panic attacks?" she added.
"Yeah, but...." Andy was quite hesitant to talk more about her.
"It's okay, we can talk about it some other time."
Amanda left Andy in the room so he could take a rest but without her knowledge, Andy had something planned already. He was incredibly happy and quite worried about going to the mountain. He was going skiing for the first time without his friends. But there was one thing Andy wanted to try, to have fun peacefully without depending too much on anyone; there was no time for him to feel sorry or guilty for doing what he wanted this time.
