Year 1954 , there lived an orphan called Kero in a small town in Daito island . At the age of two , a poor family adopted him and he became a part of their family . Even if they are poor , the 70 years old grandma , Oshin Yasashi take a good care of Kero along with her own granddaughter , a one year old , Ayura Yasashi.

At the same time , there lived a rich husband and wife in Okinawa . Their days are always gloomy . Their richness could not brighten their days as the wife , Hiyori Akiyama is not capable to give birth .

The husband , Touya Akiyama , felt pitied with his wife as she wept everyday . He wanted his wife to smile so he decided to take her to the beach . She was so unmotivated . Even her physical was a like a living doll . Her gaze were empty . Her skin were cold and pale .

Her husband have to convince her a few times when she finally agreed to come with him . The very next day , they went to the beach . She stared at the ocean with lifeless looks in her eyes . He sighed as he looked up to the sky . That's when she suddenly stood up and ran towards the ocean . She was so fast and when he noticed her , she already reached the water .

He ran after her as fast as he can , thinking that she want to commit suicide . But she kneeled as she picked up something . When he reached her , she turned around with a beautiful baby girl . She have a gorgeous big blue eyes like the sky . She smiled and looked at him with eyes that is full of hopes .

"Touya , can we adopt her?" - she asked .

Touya smiled and said - " Yes ! We will adopt her ."

They took the baby home and named her Dera .

• 16 years later •

At 1970

Kero ( 18 ) grown up as a good looking and strong guy . He is working at a fishing boat and work hard to feed his family . Kero's sister Ayura is 17 now and she is so pretty and popular . she opened a tiny diner in front of the house and sell tasty dishes at the evening after her school . Kero didnt go  to school because he can't afford it and he worked in the fishing boat since kid to find money for his sister so that she can go to school .

Their grandma Oshin helped Ayura at the Diner often but kero doesnt like it because he want her to rest at home because she is already 86 . One day , the radio announced that there will be a small storm coming . So Kero went to his boat but the owner said they can't go fishing today because the boat got some holes under and now it is filled with water . He told Kero to fix the boat and gave some money before he left .

• At the Okinawa •

The Akiyama family is preparing to go to Osaka . Touya is going to Osaka for his business while Hiyori and Dera are joining to visit Osaka . The ship captain said there will be a small storm today and tell them its not safe to go today . Touya said he needed to go to Osaka today or his business will be in danger . The captain gave up and started his boat . At 2pm , the wind blew so hard and start raining heavily . At Daito island , Kero have done fixing his boat and the radio announce emergency report that the storm evolved into a big Typhoon and everyone should stay at home . Kero decided to go home fast because he is worried about Ayura and Oshin .

4 hours earlier in the middle of the sea , the boat that the Akiyama family riding is facing the Typhoon . their boat got lifted up high by a big wave and got hit by a big rock then it fell down and exploded . Dera eyes got damaged becuz of the fire and can't see anymore . When the ship exploded Dera was wearing life guard and fell from the ship and was washed away by the strong wave . Touya covered his wife when the ship exploded and his head got hit and passed out .

Four hours later ,

When Kero was returning to his home , he saw something near the shore . He ran towards there to check . When he reached there , he was shocked to see an unconscious girl . He held her and tried to wake her up . Her pulses were weak and body was pale but she still had some body warmth in her . Kero decided to pick her up and ran to the village doctor .

One hour later at doctor's clinic , the doctor checked the girl and told Kero that now she is okay but is still unconscious . He prescribed some medicines for her and asked Kero to leave her there till the storm ends .

Kero returned to his home. At home , he found grandma Oshin at the entrance of house waiting for him . As he entered the house , she asked him why he is so late in this storm . She told Kero how worried she was for him . Kero explained everything to the grandma . Grandma Oshin asked him to wait there and went to her room . She came out holding some cash and said , "I saved this for emergency but I guess it's time to use it now" . Kero refused to accept the money but his grandma insisted him to take money , she put the money in his pocket and told him to take care of the girl . She told him that she and Ayura will come to the clinic after the storm . Suddenly , Ayura came out with a bag and gave it to Kero . " Onii-chan , I put some clothes for you and her " she said to Kero with a soft smile .

Being overwhelmed by generosity of his family , Kero hugged grandma , patted Ayura's head and left to the clinic .

Two days have been passed since Kero found Dera , but she was still unconscious . The storm has ended . Kero was regularly visiting Dera in the clinic . He visited her from late morning to the evening daily . On the third day , when he was visiting her he felt asleep on the chair near Dera's bed while looking over her . A few hours had went since Kero's arrival , he was still sleeping . Dera woke up from her unconsciousness . She slowly opened her eyes and tried to look at her surroundings but it was all dark , she was unable to see anything . She tried to move her hands to observe her surrounding but it was in vain . She got scared and screamed loudly . Kero who was sleeping on the chair , got shocked and abruptly wake up . He was unable to understand what's happened to her but he tried to calm her down and asked her to wait as he went to call the doctor .

Kero came back with the doctor to Dera . The doctor tried to calmed her down . When she was calmed , he did some check-up on her . He lighted a torch on her eyes and asked her whether she felt it or not , she responded in denial . After the check-up , the doctor tried to ask Dera about her name . Dera went silent but her expression were saying that she was trying to recollect her memories but was unable to even remember her name . This broke her down . She again started to scream and crying loudly . Kero and doctor both again tried to calm her down , the doctor advised her to have some rest and sleep . The doctor called Kero outside the room . He told him that he found some burn marks around her eyes , so it seems that her eyes have got damaged by fire . She also seems to have hit her head and lost her memory .
