Emerson's Cafe
Tanya
What time do you get off today? I’m thinking about grabbing a bite to eat, you in?
Jennifer
I get off at 2:30 today. I told Henry I’d cover for him. He said he was going to be late, but of course I’m always up for a bite!
The clock on the cafe wall blinked 1:27pm. The ivory walls were plain, the brown tile floor was plain, the burgundy booths and seats were plain. Everything about Emerson’s Cafe was plain and boring.
Suddenly two tall figures walked in through the doors. The afternoon sunlight brightened up the full interior. Tanya looked up and gasped.
Mr. Emerson
Good afternoon ladies! Working hard I see! Has anyone seen my grandson?
Mr. Emerson seemed cheery upon walking through the door, holding the waist of young blonde woman. He scowled when he looked at his wrist watch.
Mr. Emerson
Henry is late, AGAIN?!
Mr. Emerson looked so angry and made the girls wince with his bold voice. He even made the young woman lift her arms in surprise and she made a yelp.
The young woman slaps Mr. Emerson on the arm. Then smirks.
Kimberly/Kim
Johnny you know I don’t like when you raise your voice. *pouts*
Mr. Emerson
I’m sorry, baby. I’m just upset that my grandson doesn’t take this job seriously.
Meanwhile Henry walks through the door, looks up and pauses.
Tanya and Jennifer look at each other while patiently waiting for Mr. Emerson’s dismissal. It was now 2:40. Jennifer was closing down her till for the day and preparing Henry’s. Tanya nervously chewed on her fingernails as she knew how angry Mr. Emerson had been with his grandson.
Henry sheeplessly walked towards the counter to punch in.
Henry
Look I’m really sorry. You know I am.
Mr. Emerson
Save the sorries, Henry. All I need to do is make one phone call to your father and you are on a plane back home. Do you want that?
Henry
*shakes head* No, Sir.
Henry
*turns to walk towards the counter to punch in*
Henry puts his apron on and continues to punch in, getting his till ready for his shift.
Jennifer
It’s okay. I don’t mind covering for you, but you’re going to eventually have to tell your grandfather why you are late on those days.
Henry
You don’t understand though. You don’t know my grandfather like I do. He just doesn’t agree with my choices.
Jennifer
Okay, if you are going to keep your secret, then you are going to need to be more punctual.
Jennifer
Be smart with your time, Hen. You’re a great guy and Anthony is lucky to have you, but do you ever stop to wonder how he feels to be kept a secret?
Henry
No, I guess I don’t think about that much. Ant is so open, his parents support him, the community supports him. I just don’t see what a guy like that sees in me.
Tanya stood silently, not paying attention to what they were saying, she was staring in the direction of the young, blonde woman.
Henry
Tanya! I didn’t know you were standing there this whole time.
Tanya
Oh I wasn’t even paying attention to you to be completely honest. I was on my way over to see if Jennifer is ready to go eat. *smiles awkwardly*
Jennifer
Food! Oh I’m starving! I’ll grab my purse and coat, then we can head out!
As Jennifer rushed to get her belongings, Tanya turned to Henry with an excited look on her face.
Tanya
Henry? Do you know who that woman is? Is your grandfather with her?
Henry
Yeah, that’s Kimberly. *rolls eyes* I don’t really know the status of their relationship, all I know is she is a total brat. She is around our age, 24.
Tanya
Oh, do you like having her around? She’s really pretty. *stares at Kimberly’s long, golden locks resting so perfectly on the top of her breasts*
Henry
Yeah she is a good looking woman. I think my grandfather only brings her around me to try and make me jealous. *laughs* Like that will ever work.
Henry
She stays with us three days out of the week. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. She then leaves Sunday afternoon.
Tanya
*still admiring Kimberly* Why only those three days?
Jennifer returns with her coat wrapped on one arm and her purse on the other shoulder. She was putting her phone into her purse.
Jennifer
Okie dokie, T, ready to go?
Tanya
Yes let’s get out of here finally. ~maybe if I get out of here I won’t be so quite. I really wish I could look at Kimberly for a little while but for now I know that she is in town for the rest of the week~
The two girls walked out of the cafe. Tanya glanced back at Kimberly. Kimberly stood tall wearing high heels. They made her legs look great.
Kimberly/Kim
*looks behind her and sees Tanya staring*
Kimberly/Kim
~what a plain girl but perhaps she’ll be fun~ *smiles at Tanya*
Dino-Mart Convenience
The two girls walked down the side walk to the nearest convenience store, The Dino-Mart. The cool, spring breeze flowed through the air. You could smell the salt coming from the ocean.
The rays of the sunlight created a great sense of warmth in Tanya.
Tanya
Do you think Mr. Emerson will fire Henry for being late again?
Jennifer
I’m not really sure. I know Henry hates working there. Did you know that he is trying to get an internship working for the paper? Anthony is helping him get there.
Tanya
No, I hadn’t heard that yet.
The girls finally reached the store . As they were walking in the doors, a friendly and familiar voice sounded through the small building.
David
Jenny! Tanya! My two favorite customers.
Jennifer
*blushes* heyyy David. How has your day been?
David
It’s been going, but looks like my day just got better seeing two beautiful faces come into the store.
David is the cashier at Dino-Mart down the block from the cafe. He and the girls have known each other since childhood.
Tanya
Hey! *smiles and waves cheerfully*
David
How have you been. I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve seen you.
A customer dropped a drink and a bag of chips on the counter.
***beep, beep*** the items were scanned one by one. David carefully bagged the drink and chips into a plastic bag.
David
That’ll be $3.27. *smiles*
The customer holds a card up.
Customer
Do you take card?
David
Of course! *takes card and swipes*
As David is cashing out the customer the card reader buzzed then a receipt printed. David rips the receipt off and places the tiny piece of paper inside the bag.
David
*smiles* Have a wonderful day!
Customer
You too *walks out*
The bell on the door rang as the customer walked out the doors. David leans over the counter with a wide smile on his face.
Tanya
Uh oh! I know that look. Where is it?
Jennifer
Where is what? What are you talking about?
David
She’s talking about the party I’m about to invite you guys too *wide toothy grin*
Jennifer
A party?! David! How come she knows about that look and I don’t!? That’s unfair *crosses arms and pouts*
Tanya
Jennifer it’s really not that big of a deal. Besides you really aren’t that type of person to go to parties. I didn’t think you’d mind.
Jennifer
Well no I’m not, but it would still be nice to feel included. What kind of party is it?
David
Well I’m sorry. I’ll include you more from now on. I really didn’t take you for the party type either but…I am required to bring two females so. Would you come?
Jennifer
What kind of party requires their guests to bring two females? That seems so absurd to me!
Tanya
Jennifer, why don’t you come it will be fun! I can come over and we can get ready together. *claps hands together*
David
You girls should really come and I will pick you up tonight after I’m off. Jennifer it will be fun. But just be ready for anything.
Jennifer
Anything? What is that suppose to mean?
Tanya
Never mind that. Let’s get some food quick and go get ready
Tanya pulled out her phone to see the time had said 3:20pm. Walking back to the cooler to pick out a tea drink.
Tanya
What time is this party?
David
9 tonight I get off at 7:30 so I will be over at your place to pick you girls up at 8:45 or so?
Jennifer
Well at least pick us up at 8:30 so we can be on time. I hate being late for things! *nervous shudder*
David
*laughs* Jennifer for you I will come at 8:30. But you can’t really be late to this. You just show up whenever.
Tanya
Well it’s good it gives us time to get showered. I smell like a f****ing coffee shop.
Jennifer
Tanya! I hate that word! *covers ears*
Tanya
~I don’t know why she acts like a child. She’s an adult, she’s older than me!~ okay I’m sorry Jennifer *eye roll*
The girls put their assortment of drinks and snacks on the counter to be rung up. ***beep,beep, beep,beep*** Tanya pulled out her wallet to pay for the items.
David
Alright, pretty lady, that will be $11.32.
Tanya
*hands him a few dollar bills and change*
Tanya
I don’t need the change. See you tonight *waves*
David
Alright girls I’ll see you later! *finishes the transaction and closes the till drawer*
The sound of the bell rang as they walked out to head to Tanya’s apartment.
The two walk across the street in their tiny town, as Tanya’s apartment was within walking distance.
Jennifer’s family home was out in the country. She took a bus to the town every morning for work and as far as anyone can recall. She’s never been late to anything in her life. Her family strives on punctuality and to be late is to be a loser and winning is everything.
As the girls walked up the stairs to the complex, a dog bolted out the door and knocked Jennifer onto the ground.
Ron
Oh my goodness, my dear are you okay?! I am so sorry for my hound.
Jennifer
Don’t you know there is a leash law in place in this neighborhood! That is totally dangerous!
Ron
I am sorry, miss. I am new to this area and I was just on my way to take my garbage out when my dog ran out the door.
Jennifer
Well now you know to keep your pooch on a leash. He is a sweet boy though. He was just excited *kneels down petting the man’s dog*
The dog was licking Jennifer’s face while she was petting him.
Tanya
*laughs* He seems to really like you, Jenny! *turns to man* This is my building. You must be my new neighbor. I’m Tanya and this is my best friend Jennifer.
Ron
I’m Ron and this big guy is Brutus *pats Brutus’s side*
Tanya
Well it was nice to meet you *waves gently and heads up the concrete stairs*
Jennifer
*follows Tanya * It was a pleasure to bump into your dog *giggle*
The heavy door shuts loudly behind them in the echoing entry way. Tanya checks her mail box before unlocking the security door.
Tanya's Apartment
The two of them walked up the creaky stairs. Tanya rustled around in her purse to pull out a pink fluff ball keychain. Pulling out her keys, she proceeded to unlock the dead bolt on her apartment door.
Tanya

*unlocking the door* So I was thinking we should get you dressed up really {nice}
Jennifer
~the way she said nice seemed a bit different, almost seductive.~ Nice? What would you have in mind?
The two of them entered Tanya’s apartment. Tanya set her keys down on the entry table, along with her purse. She placed her coat on a hook, taking Jennifer’s coat and purse to hang up. She kicked her shoes off towards the table.
Jennifer took her shoes off and placed them neatly on the rug. She knelt down to fix Tanya’s shoes next to hers.
Jennifer
*looks up* So let’s eat huh!
Tanya is in the kitchen looking over the island separating the living room from the kitchen. She sees Jennifer sitting on her phone.
Tanya
Who are you talking to? *reaches up for a glass*
Jennifer
Huh? Oh it’s just David. Im telling him about your neighbor and his dog.
Tanya
Oh yeah! *laughs* what did he say to that?
Jennifer
He just asked if I was okay and still able to come out tonight. I told him I’m not hurt just a little scrape and yes I am coming out.
Tanya
*friendly smile* that’s good I’m glad you’re not letting that ruin your night. Do you think he was a little bit of a jerk?
Jennifer
Actually no, I kinda thought he was…. I don’t know, *shy, quite voice* cute
Tanya
JEN! In all the years I’ve known you I’ve never heard you say that about another guy!
Tanya
*leans over the island* should we get his number?
Jennifer
Oh no it’s okay *shakes head* I can’t really focus on a relationship or guys right now anyways. I have to focus on my career and proving to my family I can run the business.
Tanya
I know, but… look at it this way, maybe you can keep this as a secret? You are an adult. You make your own decisions. You have your own g*****n life!
Tanya
*sigh* All I’m saying is, you need to have your own dreams. Not your parents.
Jennifer
*looks down, ashamed* I know that you are trying to help. I do appreciate you. Maybe you’re right. I do need to get out more.
Suddenly a loud knock pounded against the front door. Both girls looked at each other startled. Tanya ran to the door quietly to look out the peep hole.
Jennifer
*whispers* who is it?
Tanya
*mouthed* That guy with the dog!
Tanya turned to open the door when another knock banged against the wood.
Tanya
*opens door* sorry about that! Can I help you?
Ron
Im sorry for the sudden intrusion, but I believe one of you ladies dropped this. * holds up a dangling silver necklace with a sun pendant*
Jennifer
*clutches her throat*
Jennifer
*gasp* my necklace! * rushes towards the door* I didn’t even realize it was missing! It must’ve fell when Brutus knocked into me!
Jennifer
Thank you so much!
Jennifer
*reaches for the necklace* how can I repay you!
Ron
Well you can *smirk* give me your number?
Jennifer
*shock* my, my number?
Tanya
*nudges Jennifer* I think it would be a good idea!
Jennifer
*shyly reaches for her phone* He-Here just add your contact info to my phone.
Ron took Jennifer’s phone entered his number and sent himself a quick message to be sure he had her number too.
Ron
*smirks* there you go. I took the liberty of sending myself a message. So I have yours! *shifts head to side then grins*
Jennifer
Oh you did?*shocked*
Ron
Well I better let you ladies get to your night!
Tanya
There’s actually a party tonight we are attending! *excited*
Ron
A party? I love parties *smirk* where will this party be?
Tanya
Oh, umm, I’m actually not to sure the address but since Jennifer has your number she can text you the details!
Ron
*glances at Jennifer* Be sure to text me, yes?
Jennifer
*nods* Yes I will!
Ron continued to the apartment next door to Tanya’s.
Tanya
*shuts door* I can’t believe it was THAT easy to get his number!
The girls excitedly hurry in the bathroom.
Tanya
You can shower first if you want. I will clean up first before I get in the shower *glances at clock*
Jennifer
Well it’s 5:27 now, we have enough time to get ready! I will shower first *walks down the hallway to the bathroom*
Tanya

Tanya didn’t get an answer from Jennifer. So she opened the door a crack to peel at her.
The room was filled with steam. You could hear Jennifer humming over the running shower. Tanya peered into the bathroom.

~she is totally unaware that I am standing here. I can see her figure through the sheer shower curtain. I can tell she’s washing her hair. The way her arms are above her head~

*opens door* Jennifer?

*shocked* Tanya! What are you doing in here?!
Tanya
Relax! *giggles* I was using the bathroom. Just warning you before I come in.

*peeks out the curtain* I’m almost finished in here. Sorry for taking so long. I just need to wash my body.
