When I was in my first year of University I got my scholarship from England. It was always my dream to study in Oxford University. Literally from school life I wanted this dream to be real. Here I am today carrying my dreams in my hands which I always craved for.
It was 23rd March. Winter was gone. That morning when I went to the university, my professor called me in his office. I was wondering if I had any assignment which I forgot. Anyway I went to his office. The professor was the head of my department. I liked him very much for his teaching style and how polite he was with all. As usual he welcomed me with a warm smile (warmer and excited than usual)
"Anu, please come." He said.
"Good morning, professor."
"A very good morning to you too my dear."
"You seem to be in a very good mood today, prof."
"Indeed I am, Anu. I am sure you will be too after hearing the news I have for you."
"Well, what is the news, sir?"
"You applied for a scholarship last month, I believe?" He asked mysteriously.
"Yes sir. For the scholarship in Oxford University." I said nervously.
"Well, Anu do you think you are eligible for the scholarship?"
"Sir I've really worked hard for this scholarship since my high school. I think I might be considered."
"You know, last night the results of the scholarship had been published?"
"I didn't know that." My feet started shaking at this news.
"Oh, it's okay. I have the list. Would you mind checking it?"
"You are making me nervous, sir." He was always like this. Melodrama. I was frozen with fear and he want me to check my results myself.
"Oh, come on. Just look at the list." He said shrugging.
He handed me a yellow envelope in which my whole fate depends. I took it with my shaking hands. I was so afraid. What if I didn't get the scholarship? But I had to check it. Professor would not just let me see the list if I didn't get it. Or is he going to criticize me for my failure? I opened the envelope and took out the list. As I unfolded the paper I saw the heading-
ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP RESULTS, BANGLADESH 2015
Oh no. The scholarship was given all over the world and Bangladesh was a small country among others. Our university was even smaller to consider. Will my name be in it? There were 100 names in the list. The student who got the first place was from Dhaka University. I scrolled through the list and my heart began to beat faster. Where was my name? When I looked down from top 10 suddenly at No. 15 I saw my name. I was still confused. Was it my name or a different student with the same name? Then I checked the name of the university. And believe what?.......it was my University's name. I couldn't possibly dreamt this whole thing, right? I pinched my arm. So it was really Real. I looked up at my professor. He was smiling widely at me.
"Well....Miss Anu, congratulations."
"I.........I can't believe.....oh.....thanks professor." I stuttered.
"Take your time, dear. I understand. Was a real shocking news for you."
"Did I really get the scholarship? I mean.........really?" I asked stupidly.
"I am really happy to say that....Yes Anu you really got the scholarship. It is time to make your dreams come true."
The whole day of mine went in haze. Everybody congratulated me. The news spread pretty quickly than I expected. Only two students of our university got scholarship. Beside me a girl from Physics got it. She was going to an engineering university in Germany. As for me, I will be going to Oxford University to study medicine. I called at my home. My parents were so much happy to hear this news. They as usual cried. I told them that I was coming next week. My flight was in 25th April and I am supposed to show up at the hostel of Oxford University as soon as I reach England. I was really going there! I couldn't believe it. When the dreams become true it is hard to believe it. I went to my dorm room and started packing up. My best friend plus my roommate, Thiya suddenly burst through the door. The next thing I know is that she was hugging me and crying. Her reaction made me feel at last that I was really leaving her, my friends, my parents, this university. I also started crying. I usually don't cry specially in front of her. So she lifted her head to see my face.
"Anu, don't cry. I am happy for you. I bet you are secretly happy to finally get rid of me." She said. Tears in her eyes.
"True enough, Thi." I said while wiping my tears.
Thiya was always able to make me feel better as soon as she opened her mouth. She is the one who really gets me. Because of that I don't want to leave her.
" Well I heard that head prof gave you this big news." She teased.
"Yeah, so?" I said shrugging. I knew what was coming next. Typical Thi.
"Oh, don't play dumb Anu. You know why."
"Will you just keep blabbering or you will help me pack?" I said changing the subject.
" So.........you are really leaving, huh?" She said quietly.
I stood and hugged her.
"Bet I wouldn't be able to get rid of you even if I die. In comparison, England is a mere distance to annoy me, right?"
"Right you are. It is my hobby to make your life hell. Without me, your life would be so boooooooooring. Can't even imagine."
This was my Thiya. Crying one minute and cracking jokes the next.
After a while she asked, "When are you leaving the uni?" She was sounding like a little girl who was choking.
"Well.....the next Saturday, I guess."
"And ........... Bangladesh?"
"25 April."
"I will miss you." She admitted
"Me too." I said looking down.
We spent the rest of the day like this. Being emotional. Remembering our best and worst moments. I would miss her. Very much.
It was 1:30 in the morning when Thiya pinched me on my arm. I opened my eyes. When I looked at her I realized that she was crying. Her eyes were red.
"Thiya? What happened?" I asked urgently.
"Anu, would you mind if I sleep with you? I don't want to waste any second while you are here." She said still tears in her eyes. What will I do without her.
"Sure Thi. Come over."
"I know it's weird........" I stopped her in midsentence.
"No, it is not, silly." I said. Tears welling up in my eyes.
The days went by and it was time to leave my University. All the teachers, students, my friends and Thiya were standing in front of the gate. They all bade me goodbye. Thiya was crying continuously, so was I. After much difficulty I got on the cab. Heading home...... heading to a new journey.
