Beast

The scent of death

“Waaaaaahhhhhhh.” The wood seems disturbed by the sound of an ambulance and police vehicle. The cold air remained chill, and mother nature appears calm. Darkness ceases the glow of the moonlight. Beneath the cloudy sky where the flashlight lights the bared ground, lays the bodies of two individuals.

Their fleshes and bones remained scattered on the icy grass. Blood painted the land red and black. “Blargh,” a police puke from the horror of the scene. “This is mess up. Whoever killed them is a beast and not a human.” She stated while wiping the remaining puke for her mouth with her elbow. “Frightening incidents occur in these woods. Still, I have never seen something this horrifying.” Her co-worker responded to the police statement.

“This is the kind of jumble you don’t get to witness every day. There are no significant parts left of these bodies for autopsy. What are we going to take back? Are we going to carry these pieces of flesh, skull, and licked bones that have no skin covering them. Who or what executed this sickening mess?” The EMT lady cried in frustration.

“I do not believe our perpetrator is a who. It shows more of a what, from the appearance of this death scene. Perhaps, a male black bear that preys on humans. They are hostile toward people, and whatever did this appears aggressive. It could be anything, although I won't accept this as the result of a human being.” The police director reveals to his subordinates.

“If this is an attack of a beast, then we are obliged to keep our eyes observant and ears alert. It could be lurking in the shadows. Stay wide-awake chaps, do not let your defenses down! Have your guns on standby and flashlight focus!” Another police officer shouted.

“Shut up, Alvin! Do you want to wake up the sleeping creatures in this damn woods!” The director barked at his underling. “Sorry, sir! Yes, sir!” Alvin answered and back away from the crime scene. “Melvin, get over here and examine the remains.” The director ordered the forensic medical examiner.

“The creature devoured most of the corpses, which have created multiple problems concerning forensic pathology and forensic anthropology. Severe mutations have occurred on the face of the remains and their teeth. Their internal organs happened to be eaten by the animal. And it might be impossible to identify the precise cause of death.” Melvin reported after taking a closer look at the corpses.

“Melvin, you need to give me reliable information. Did a human or an animal cause their death? We ought to present strong proof regarding this case. Something this strange occurred in our city, we deserve answers. Furthermore, we must identify what sort of deranged person or beast we are involved with.” Alvin said to his partner with fear in his eyes. All the monster talk seems terrible, and he wanted to get out of the wood this instant.

“Lesions caused by animal attacks may be evaluated and misinterpreted as antemortem lesions as ligature marks, firearm wounds, or stab wounds during the postmortem period. Which would make it more troublesome to determine if our suspect is a human or animal?” Melvin notified his teammates. Their face became overflow with terror after his news.

“Because of the loss of skin may lead to the disappearance of tattoos and old surgical scars, which could be useful in the identification of the victim. Joe, we need to remove the remains of their bodies back to my lab for further examination. I can not get more reports in this darkness and simple environment.” He told his director while taking off his gloves.

Everyone let’s rapid up and get moving. We don’t have all night. I have to get home to my daughter and read some bedtime stories to her. Don’t drag on! Move your weak legs faster! Melvin and Derrie, do a patrol around the area and report back in fifteen minutes.” He shouted with power in his voice. No one spoke a word, although the dirt trembles from the movement of their boots.

There under every blanket of the night are mysteries that disappear in the mist with the darknesses. The owl knows these secrets and has seen the face of the beast. These creatures are not a puzzle to the wind. The breeze has watched them mutate into their original form. They have shown their fluffy body, and razor-sharp teeth on every full moon. Yet their shadow sent fear to the animals in the wood. They are not animals, nor are they human. Still, they fit within both circles. Humans may call them a monster, but mother nature does not deny their kind.

These creatures always stay hiding. Yet on this particular night, one stride behind Alvin and Derrie while it ducked under the shelter of the trees. These two men shiver in the cold night breeze. However, the chilly air is not the reason for their coldness. It was the dread of engaging the creature that could strip the skin of one’s bone. Their flashlights continue searching for the sign of movement. “Alvin, loosen yourself up. You are safe. Relax, there is nothing to be frightened about in this wood. Plus, we have guns with us.”

“BANG,” a gunshot fired.“Growl,” a dominant noise came out of the bushes. “What is wrong with you? Why are you discharging at thin air? Are you going insane?” Derrie screams at his buddy while urging Alvin to lower his weapon. What was that noise? I heard a cry or more like a roar. I am not insane. The was something moving in the shadow of that tree. Did you not hear the screamed. Because I overheard it loud and clear.” He replied with a high pitch.

“I heard it too. But, it could have been any creature roaring. You just can not go about shooting any and everything because it moved. I am more afraid. Still, I acknowledge that this is the animal’s dominion, and we are the intruder, Okay?” Derrie said calmly and hit Alvin lightly on the shoulder. “Crack,” a sound came from the opposite end of the bush.

Alvin jumps backward in panic. Derrie thought it best to see what was behind the bushes. He released Alvin pistol to him, and walk toward the noise. Alvin stood aside as he watched Derrie pick up something from behind the bushes. “Stand down, Alvin! It is just a wounded kid”. Derrie said to his buddy. “No! Help me!” The child shouted before fainting in Derrie hands.

Light then darkness

“la,la,la,la,la, the sky is so blue. The earth looks deep green, and the sun is pretty. Haha, I feel like a bird flying out of its cage.” Snow said as she twirled around the rustic iron pole.

“This feeling is amazing. The wind is in my hair, and my worries are flowing away with the breeze. I can touch the sky from where I am standing. I feel dizzy and weak. I am going to puke now.” She told her friend in a shaking tone.

He rushed toward her as she was about to hit the ground and held her in his arms.

He wore a worried expression on his face and a sad eye when he stared at her. She pulled herself away from his embrace and let out a depressing sound.

“ Umm, what is wrong with your face? Stop acting pitiful and twist along with me. Let us ship all of our pain with the wind and free ourselves from life's worries and problems. Angel, take my hands and do not let go.” She said.

Snow suddenly reaching out to hold his hands. He smiles and nods his head. Snow grabs his hand tightly and spins him around.

Angel grins widened every time Snow gave out a brief smile. His yellow eyes seem to focus on her entirely, regardless of how hard they whirl. He did not seem drowsy, but Snow appeared unstable. She could not endure any longer. Plus, her surroundings were growing dusky. Snow closed her eyes and felt herself falling to the ground.

She rested her head on his chest and fell asleep. Angel did not shake a muscle in his body nor, did he make a sound? He wanted Snow to rest and release her mind from her dilemmas. She has been restless from this morning till now, and Angel dislikes watching those beautiful brown eyes worried. Time drifted by, but that did not bother him. Thirty minutes passed, and Snow finally woke up.

She raised her head and noticed his eyes were gazing at her. Snow also observed that Angel was resting beneath her, and she happened to be relaxing on top of him. “Your eyelashes are so long. Plus, your eyes look cute with its yellow color. You seem quite handsome right now.” She said to him. Before realizing that it was not a dream. “Oh my God, I am very sorry.” She cried while attempting to get off him. However, she was lured back unto his chest. Snow became confused about why she could not stand up. Then, she realizes that he was still holding unto her hands all this time.

“Angel, let go off my hands!” She shouted at him and forcefully withdrew her hands from his grip.

Snow got off Angel and sat on the grass. Angel turned his head away from her and stared at the broken fence that surrounded the abandoned house.

“I am sorry. It was not my intention to be this hash. We are friends, and I do not want to give the wrong signal. How about I promise you as your friend, I will not leave your hand ever again. I will not abandon or hurt you. And I will pardon you when you wrong me. I will also stay by your side in this life and the next. What do you think?” Snow said as she lay down beside him and rested her head against the grass.

Angel faces her and nods his head in agreement with her request. She smiles at him, and he returns a smile.

“Then, we can make this our friendship oath.” Snow said and bounced off the ground in excitement.

Lately, she calms down from the rush of excitement after seeing that Angel looks confused.

“You do not understand what I am talking about.” She asked him, and he nodded his head.

"Okay, I will go first. I, Snow Wright vows to stay friends with Angel forever. I promise to protect and stand by him no matter what happens in our lives. Angel, it is your turn to say your vow.” She utters to him.

But he did not appear excited about the oath. Instead, Angel shook his head in disagreement.

“You do not want to vow?” Snow asked him, and he nodded.

“Oh, I see. That is fine with me.” She replied, her voice sounded cracked as though she was about to burst out into tears.

Snow did not know what to do now. She felt embarrassed and confused. '

'He was the want who felt neglected in the first place. Now he's refusing my offer to be there for him.' Snow thought.

Angel was about to apologize to Snow with sign language, but they were interrupted.

“Look, it is the freak and the weirdo who decided to be friends with the freak.”

A voice called out from the abandoned house's back door and they turned to see Kelvin standing against the door.

“What do you want, Kelvin?” Snow asked in a frustrating tone. Kelvin marches toward her and seizes her by the hands. “Your mother entrusted me to find you. You know she despises this freak. She is going to be enraged when she discovers that you were with him again. Just quit hanging out with this dork and come back to the old gang?” He said, then pulled Snow away from Angel.

“Kelvin, stop it. You are hurting me.” Snow screamed as she tried to remove her hands from his grasp.

Angel becomes enraged. He then steps up to Kelven and punches him in the face. His actions pissed Kelvin off. He did not hesitate to punch Angel in the stomach. Then he hit his face and pushed him to the ground. Kelvin started beating Angel everywhere on his body, implanting bloody injuries from several punches.

“Leave him alone! Please, I am begging you to stop beating him!” Snow cried as she fell to the ground in tears.

“Help! She fainted in my arms, and her temperature is increasing.” Derrie screams as he approaches his teammates.

“Get her into the ambulance now!” the EMT lady told Derrie.

He rushed inside and laid her down on her back on the stretcher.

“Her breathing feels weak.” The EMT lady said after placing her hand gently to Snow’s nose.

“Ummm. Please stop kicking him!” Snow cried out loud.

“Whatever she is remembering or dreaming about can not be pleasant!” Alvin said to his friend and held Snow's hand.

The ambulance driver drove the vehicle out of the woods with Alvin, Derrie, the EMT lady, and Joe seated in the back. Snow stopped speaking and kept silent. The EMT lady checked her nose to find out what was wrong.

“Oh my God! She is not breathing nor is she moving.” The lady screamed.

Yellow eyes

After ten minutes of attending to snow, the EMT lady got her breathing again. “Thank you, Linda. You are a lifesaver.” Alvin told the EMT lady with a smile. Linda relaxed in her seat and cleaned the sweat off her face. “I do not know if she is out of the danger zone yet. There is a possibility that she could have another heart attack. We need to get her to the hospital fast.” She explains to them.

“We will tolerate nothing and no one who tries to harm her life. She may be the only one that can tell us what happened tonight in these woods.” Joe said to his colleagues. “She seems safe and peaceful. I wonder what this child is dreaming about.” Alvin said out loud as he stared at her well-disposed face.

“I said stop, Kelvin! I will leave with you! Stop hurting him! He was trying to protect me. He is not a frightening person!” Snow yelled at Kelvin and tried to break Angel free from his grip. “Then who is the dangerous guy here? Is it me, uh? No need to answer my question. I already know your response. Fine, you are right. I am a dangerous man. Let’s leave before I take out all of his teeth from his mouth!” Kelvin stated and let go of Angel’s t-shirt. “Remember that you are just a filthy beast. And you do not deserve her or her friendship.” Kelvin revealed to Angel and spat on him.

“He is a human being like yourself. Kelvin, every time I see you acting this way. You look more of a monster, and not the guy I grew up with for the past fifteen years.” Snow told him with hate and anger in her voice. Kelvin’s expression changed, and he did not wear a playful appearance. Instead, his eyes seem burdened with hostility and pain. He grabbed Snow’s hands and dragged her away from the abandoned house. “I am sorry, Angel.” She screamed as Kelvin yanked her out of sight.

“Ahhhhh....” Snow heard a scream. “Is that Angel screaming?” She asked out loud. “Don’t be stupid. That freak is mute. There is no way he could be the one screaming.” Kelvin said as he stroked her on the head. “Get your hands off me! Also, you are the stupid one! And for the last time, stop calling him a freak!” She yelled at Kelvin and pushed him from beside her.

Kelvin moves back a few steps. His smile disappeared from his face. “Fine, you win. I will stop calling your crush a freak. But Snow, what have you learned about Angel except for the fact that Mr. William adopted him when he was eight years old?” Kelvin questions her with a very concerned tone. Snow did not reply to his question at first. She wanted to find the right answer that would shut him up.

After a few minutes, Snow stopped and turned toward him. “He is nothing like you, Kelvin. It is all the evidence I need to know that he is a man with morals.” She assured him. Kelvin kept silent the rest of the trip to Snow’s house. Mrs. Wright was waiting for her daughter at the front of their house. “Mrs. Wright, I have delivered your daughter as I promised. Now, it is time for me to head home.” Kelvin called out to Snow’s mother.

Snow passed by her mom, and she was about to enter into the house when Kelvin called her name. She turned and asked, “What?” He smiled and replied, “I will find the proof that he is not the moral guy in your life.”

“Then, who is my righteous guy? Hahahaha, you?” She told him with a burst of provoking laughter and entered her house. “That was not a pleasant thing to say to Kelvin. He is sincerely looking out for you. Although you won’t understand his intention, because Angel has clouded your judgment. I dislike him! He has a destructive influence on you.” She told her daughter when she arrived inside the house.

“Wow, this is great. You do not have to like him. He is not your friend but mine. He is my freak and my buddy, not yours!” Snow screamed at her mother. “Oh, mine! See what I mean. Therefore, I do not want you to hang out with that brat again. Snow, you are grounded for one month, and you can not leave this house without my permission. Do you understand?” Mrs. Wright replied to her daughter’s daring statement.

“Linda, she is going through another seizure,” Alvin said as he watched Snow struggling on the stretcher. “No, mom! I am begging you not to ground me! He is wounded, please!” Snow cried in her sleep. “Derrie! Put an oxygen mask around her nose. Alvin, hold her down, I will sedate her. It is our best chance of keeping her alive.” Linda shouted and give out instructions. “How long is it going to take before reaching the hospital?” Joe barked at the driver. “I am doing my best, sir.” The driver replied and stepped on the accelerator

“I have injected her. It would be long before she falls to sleep.” Linda said, and she shifts Snow’s hair off her face. “I will be an agreeable girl, just allow me to see him.” Snow mumbled with tears rolling from her eyes before she fell asleep. “This kid has gone through so much for her to have this kind of psychological breakdown. But I admired her fighting spirit. She is a true survivor.” Alvin said with a sad smile on his face. “We are almost at the hospital.” The driver informs them.

Below the cover of the night exists a wounded being. “Ahhhhhh... I can not believe that a stupid police officer shot me. I am messing up my new t-shirt with blood stains because of this gunshot wound. When I meet him again, I will get a fifty dollars from him as compensation for ruining my clothes. I need to get this bullet out of my arms.” He said while inserting his claws into his wound, and he extracted the bullet out of his arm.

“Ahh... The bullet is out. Now, I have to wait for the natural healing process. Ho, here we go! The wounded skins are stitching together. My injuries have healed, and I can proceed to the hospital now. But these human legs are too slow. I need to mutate into my original form.” He said to himself.

“Ahhh,” his bones dislocate themselves, and the transformation begins. White razor-sharp teeth came out of his gums and black fur appeared on his body. In the darkness, his shadow upon the walk faded until it disappeared, and the transformation was complete. Under the bright moonlight stood a wolf glowing in the woods. It is not just any breed of wolf, but a werewolf with distinctive yellow eyes.
