Reflection

Unsettling.

The feeling of someone watching me haunts me every night, causing me to wake up repeatedly. Strangely, it always happens around 3:00 a.m. This feeling had stuck for several months, and it just randomly appeared for no reason at all.

Waking up every morning felt strange as if someone had been changing something in my room. It wasn't noticeable unless I looked closely. I remembered putting my backpack on the right side of my nightstand the night before, yet when I woke up, it had moved to the left side. Honestly, I might just be overthinking this, misplacing my belongings, or perhaps I'm losing my mind. It was too early for me to think clearly.

As I walked towards the bathroom, I suddenly felt as though someone was watching me, sending shivers down my spine. We all experience that sensation at times, so I tried not to think too much about it. The feeling faded as soon as I left the bathroom, so I shrugged it off as no big deal.

However, the familiar feeling returned when I got into my car and glanced at the rearview mirror. It was strange, creepy, and annoying. If someone has been watching me day and night, they must be obsessed or in love with me. But now I realize I might be getting a bit delusional, letting my imagination run wild. The lack of sleep I've been getting is probably causing all this stress. That should explain everything.

Walking down the school hallway, I spotted one of my friends. “Hey, girl! I have to tell you something,” I said cheerfully.

“Good morning, YN! What is it?” she replied.

“Have you ever felt like someone is watching you?”

“Yeah? Why?”

“Nothing, I just have this feeling lately.”

“Maybe you’ve just been a little stressed,” she suggested. She looked at me with a confused expression, as if she noticed something unusual.

“Did your mole move?” she asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Wasn’t your mole below your left eye? Now it seems to be on the right side.”

“It has always been on the left side of my face. What are you talking about?”

“I’m not lying. Go take a look in the mirror.”

Confused by what she meant, I headed to the girl's bathroom. Chills ran down my spine once again as soon as I stepped in. Looking in the mirror, I noticed that it had moved which is pretty weird. This was normal, right? While looking at my reflection, something felt off. My reflection felt off. I knew this was me, but the emptiness in my reflection eyes didn’t feel and look like me. The lights flickered, and the bathroom door was slowly opening when I looked at myself for far too long. I snapped myself back to reality, I must have been zoned out.

Later that day, I returned home late in the afternoon. As the sun sets I lay down on my bed. When I closed my eyes, I fell into a deep sleep. I once again entered one of my nightmares, but this one felt disturbingly real. My senses were heightened, reacting to every little detail.

I was walking down an endless path that was pitch black, with a single spotlight shining down on me. As soon as I blinked, the floor transformed into a mirror, and I found myself standing in an endless hallway of mirrors. I looked to my right, and a mirror wall appeared. Glancing to my left, I saw another wall of mirrors. When I looked forward, all I could see were more mirrors. There were mirrors beneath my feet, and everywhere I looked.

The ground suddenly felt like it was shaking. When I looked back, I saw mirrors shattering behind me, and the ground crumbling into pieces. I didn’t know what this dream meant, but I had a gut feeling that if I died in it, I would die in real life too. I ran as if my life depended on it, but I felt slow, as if whatever was behind me was catching up. Then I blinked again and found myself back in the pitch darkness of an endless hallway. As I walked, I spotted a body mirror ahead. Just then, I heard a humming sound as I drew closer to it. This felt strange, and a wave of fear washed over me.

The humming grew louder as I went near the mirror. As I looked at myself the humming stopped. My reflection felt off like the one from the bathroom. It had empty eyes. I stared at my eyes and my reflection blinked. I didn't blink but my reflection did. I backed away, and my reflection followed my movement. I looked around to see if I could run away from this dream. Was this even a dream? But I saw nothing but pitch darkness. "Hello," I heard from a distance. The voice sounded like me, and I looked around where it had come from. Then I stepped closer to the mirror, my reflection stood still, not mimicking my movements. Confusion and fear washed over me; I had never experienced a dream like this before.

"Hello? Did you hear me?" she asked.

I stood still, quiet and speechless. Was this real?

"Hello?" She grew increasingly impatient.

"Hi," I replied, my tone was short and timid.

"Great, I finally met you! My name is NY," she said cheerfully.

"What are you?"

"Me? I'm you!"

"What?"

"I'm your reflection, so I'm you."

"What do you want from me?"

"You."

"What?"

"I want your life."

"Aren't we the same? Don't we share the same life?"

"No, we don't."

"What do you mean?"

"We don't," her voice sounded angry.

"Explain?"

"Everything in my world is the opposite of your world. The things you love, I hate. Everyone who loves you hates me. Your mom and dad love you, but mine don’t. I want to be loved."

"How is that my problem? You can change that."

"You're not getting it, are you? Everything you do is the opposite, and I have no control over that, but you can."

"Well, that is not my problem."

NY stepped closer to the mirror, reaching out to grab my wrist with a tight grip. She pulled me in, and we swapped places. "Well, it's your problem now," she smirked.

My eyes were wide open with fear as I glanced at the clock. It was the usual time—3:00 a.m. I tried to shake off the fear and went back to bed. The sun was just beginning to rise when my alarm went off. Still half awake, I rubbed my eyes and got out of bed, but I misjudged my path and bumped into my closet door. Confused, I tried to gather my thoughts and wake up fully. Everything felt off; my entire room, the house, and even the way to school were all opposite. Then I heard faint humming and giggling in my room.
