My voice faltered at the strong staticky reply.
I took the device out of my ear and frowned at it. The device was black, slick, and definitely not made for a job like this.

I tossed it to the other side of the room along with the stuffy mask, forcing my focus back to the assigned mission.
Get the kill then go home. That is my motto.
Finish the job and then relax.
I looked back through the scope of my sniper rifle, looking for the matching face in the files given to me.
My eyes moved swiftly across the windows and open spaces of the building across from this old dump.
Scanning and searching the faces of the people there. No match.. no match.. no match. Where could he have gone? He stood in the 14 floor window not 30 seconds before.

I stiffened from the strong voice behind me. What happened? I was trained in noticing footsteps, why didn’t I hear his?
I didn’t dare to look back or identify the face to the chilling voice. My mind searched through my teaching of a way to get out of this situation.
Hand to hand combat.. no that would be a bad idea. If the man behind me got a glance at my face or even a strand of my hair.. I’d be done for. I started to regret throwing my mask to the opposite corner of the room.
Escaping was out of the question. If he knew I failed to complete my task... let’s just say he’d find a good punishment from that twisted mind of his.

He leaned down to my ear and my eyes widened.

It felt like he was a predator. A predator that new when and how to strike. I was... afraid.
Without much thought of the soon to be punishment, I stood up and jerked myself through the broken window. I fell from the sixteenth floor of the abandoned skyscraper.
I came out heavily injured but alive with now a dangerous predator on my tail.
I failed the mission, I won’t be able to rest. Instead I will be punished.
