I slide my bag on the chair and keep books on the table. Josh Eliotte rolls his eye and groans at my presence. I look at him archly with an 'I'll kill you' look. He raise his eyebrows with 'we'll see how that goes' look and turns to his friends.
This is all we talk since Miss stephanie Jones changed everyone's seat and made me sit with this little brat. Josh is my absolute nemesis. It kills me to breath the same air with him. He thinks ditto of me.
Right now, he would be probably talking about how disgusting my existence is to his best mate Ralph Anderson, and I dare say he will be agreeing with every word of it.
I have a very low opinion of Ralph but not as low as Josh's.
The 'Ding dong' of the bell drag Josh back to his desk. Miss Jones enters the class with an air of happiness and morning spirit. How elated she is by ruining my life and making this dork sit next to me.
I would have hated Miss Jones the most, but her absolute teaching skills makes up for everything, ok, not for everything, but for most of the things. Atleast. I take out my book and pencil case with the set of new markers. Despite of all the catastrophes in my life I'm still excited for the new session.
I look at Josh from the corner of my eyes, and he is rummaging through his bag for his book. How awful! this filthy pig has failed to bring his book for three days in a row. Good for me, his problems and stupidity provide me infinite amusement. My lips spread into a smile while Miss Jones realizes he has forgot to bring his book again.
"Mr. Eliotte, may I have the pleasure to see your book." She says setting her spectacles on her nose.
"Sorry Miss Jones, I failed to bring my book again." He say looking down with a faint smile and embarrassed look on his face.
"This is the third time this week" she says "Mr Josh Eliotte, could you be anymore careless"
"Trust me he can" I utter under my breath
"I'm sorry Miss, I promise I'll bring it tomorrow and I'll never forget it again" he say
"Josh!" she exclaim with a sigh "I find that very hard to believe"
"My promise is genuine miss" he says "I'll bring it tomorrow"
"As genuine as yesterday's?" she ask and class burst into a laughter.
"No, as genuine as... um... genunity" he says
"There is no word such as genunity, Mr Eliotte" laughter persuades the room again.
He smirks and scratches his head unable to think of anything else to say.
"Mr. Eliotte, you're killing my time, this is the last chance I'm giving you. Next time I'll send you straight to the principal office. Share with Edith for today."
What!. what did she just said I scream inside. Her last words were like a knife she stabbed in my ears. I can't share my book with this fool. Josh sits back, and snatches my book to himself. I snatch it back and this goes on for a while.
"This is my book!" I scream
"You are told to share with me" he snaps
"Why do you care, you hate studying" I snap back.
He releases his hand from my book and look at me. "Oh thanks for reminding me" he say and opens his old stained and torned notebook and starts two draw two monsters. One called Miss Jones and another Edith.
"Nice drawing" I say with a little anger
"I know! he says "I mean I can look at it, unlike your face"
I open my mouth and nothing comes out but air. I shake my head for a comeback, but nothing. I can think of nothing so I roll my eyes and divert my attention to Miss Jones.
The bell rings, I've spend all periods on the lessons, being attentive and preparing notes,
and Josh, I forgot he existed. But now he his yelling and jumping in the class and kicking his friend, imitating some movie scene.
Can this boy be anymore dense? I think.
The day pass along quickly and comes the last period. The bell rings and now I can finally get rid of this jerk.
I pack my bag and walk out. I feel so light right now. If I delete Josh I had a pretty good time today, plus I've made pretty notes.
"I'm back" I announce as I come home
"welcome back, you want some snacks?" asks mom
"Sure!" I say.
I take a shower and put on some comfortable clothes.
Mom gives me a glass of orange juice and a little sandwich. I eat the sandwich while watching my favorite series `Back to December'. When the series is over I pull out my bag and take out my books. Looking at the of homework I've got, I'm already tired. I lay down on the floor around my books, debating whether I should do my homework or take a little nap.
The voice of doorbell cuts into my thoughts. I can hear my Mother's footsteps and crackling noise of the door opening. A shrill voice reaches my ear slightly distorted. I can't comprehend what it's saying but I know it's Beth.
Soon she ascend the stairs and I see her rosy pink cheeks matching her fluffy full sleeved top above denim shorts.
"Hey" I say turning my face towards her as she enters in my room.
"watcha doin'?" she asks dropping her bag on
the floor and seats beside me
"Trying to do my homework" I say
"I also tried but I was so bored that I almost fell asleep, then I decided to come here and do it with you, you know trying to make homework fun" she says laying beside and yawns loudly throwing her arm hastily
"Great!" I say "I thought I was only one who lacked inspiration"
"hmm, by the way, what are your thoughts on seventh grade so far?"
"Good, but could be better"
"yeah! same here"
"How's chilton" I ask. Chilton is the best school in town, and watching Beth acing her academics, her parents decided to transfer her there to make sure she had a promising career.
"Exhausting" she says "to make sure there school is best they make sure we work twice as hard as anyone"
"I think it will be worth it when you'll be a surgeon"
"Maybe" she utters
"By the way, Miss Jones fixed our seats last week, and you won't believe who my desk partner is"
"ooh! is it Jonathan Ross?" Jonathan is the most popular boy in seventh grade. Beth had a huge crush on him last year.
"Nope, not even in my class" i say indifferently
"oh sad! is it sebastian shlutz?"
"no"
"Austin Bledel?"
"You really think I am that luck Beth?" I blurt out impatiently
"Miracles do happen dear"
"In my case bad luck has hugged me"
"who is it?"
I prop on my shoulders to make an eye contact with her say "Josh Eliotte"
"Ew! noooo!" she she gapes and sit immediately in awe "I feel terrible" she says and puts her hand on my shoulder. "Hold on, have you taken a shower" she ask putting her hand off my shoulders with the speed on light.
"I have, trust me I'm Joshy bacteria free" we both giggle and she give me a little hug.
"I wish you get my good luck" she says
"keep it, you'll need every inch of it" I say looking at her homework.
"Yeah, let's do our homework"
"LET'S DO IT!" I announce
We finish our homework and I end up asking everything from her. For Beth my homework is like the one of second grader and her homework, I couldn't even decipher my own language. I think I learned forty new words.
Twilight invades the sky and Beth leaves. I have my dinner and go to bed.
The air is cold. I hear the pitter patter of the rain outside. I stumble out of my bed and open the window. Chilly air and water droplets whooshes inside. I shut back the window resisting against the air but my shirt is now half wet in the process.
I brush my teeth and quickly change in a warm sweater dress and leggings below.
Lightning strikes in the sky with a heavy thunder as my mom pour coffee in my cup up to the brim.
"Weather is bad dear, should I drop you to school today?" asks mom
"Yeah, thanks" I say munching on my toast
In the car i can't see anything but opaque wall of water due layers of rain. The headlight helps a little but rest of the driving depends upon anticipation. A little later I see my school building vaguely. I get out of the car and mom leaves and the car disappear in the rain within seconds.
The rest of the three meter way is a battle. Sharp swords of gales and my umbrella - a fragile buckler.
It's cold inside the campus but atleast I managed to reach here dry. Josh is not here yet, I hope he catches cold or maybe catches pneumonia and doesn't show up for a week or two weeks. I put my stuff on my table and sit and unfortunately the devil shows up fit and fine.
He throws a his bag from a distance towards the desk and it falls straight next to me. How does do that? I wonder. He begins some sort of combat with his friends again. His manners are quite similar to a wild dog. Hissing abruptly and scratching here and there, and his friends are no exception.
I look at his bag, wrinkled with a fade red color and a spider keychain. A sticker of skull and bones is sticked at the centre, and the edges of the bag are rough with few unstrangled threads. Looking at his bag I think I kind of know his personality. He is one of those rebels love to break the rules, and think they are too cool for others, and smarter than the system. Let's see how long he can manage to live in this edgy yet unrealistic world.
This Bell rings and everyone take their seats. Miss Jones enters the class happily again. This woman why is she so happy with her life? I can't help wondering. I glance at Josh and he is drawing an ugly face with messed hair and then write Edith Donne on the top of the paper.
"Why do you keep doing that?" I ask in a squeaky tone
"My art teacher says drawing your pain can make you feel better" his reply
"Ha! Ha! very funny" I say in a patronizing tone.
"I know" he says and lifts his notebook in the air and show it to his friends "rate my art" he announce.
"Ten on ten" says Brain, one of his friends and most intelligent boy in class. But I highly doubt is intelligence because a person with a perspective and wits would never chose a friend like Josh.
"Dude! I can barely tell the difference, which one is real and which one is drawing" says Ralph and they all have a heartily laugh.
"That's it!" I find myself almost screaming with face face burning red. I snatch the notebook from Josh's hand and hit him with it on his shoulder.
"I've had enough of you" I yell
"I've had enough of you long ago but I'm still tolerating, am I not?"
"You!" I say pulling him near me with his collar "haven't even seen the real of me yet" my sound is low but anger displays in it perfectly.
"What's happening here?" Miss Jones's voice reminds me I'm in class. I look around and everyone is looking at me as if I'm doing something inappropriate with Josh. His face is only few centimeters apart from mine. People can interpret as something else. I release my hands from his collar and push him away from me. He lose his balance and fall from the chair and the class burst in a laughter.
"Miss Jones look she just pushed me" says Josh and points finger on me "I'm telling you this one is not sane" the laughter continues. I'm tired of being a joke to the class.
"Miss Jones he is the one who keeps drawing monsters and name them Edith" I say and everyone laughs even louder now.
"It's not funny when it's you!" I announce
"Silence" says miss Jones loudly "and Mr Eliotte stop naming your monsters Edith and Miss Donne try to control your anger"
"Try my anger?" I cry out loud in my mind "someone should control him, someone should shut him in a zoo"
"As I was saying" continues Miss Jones 'there is a new kid joining this class. I hope you all treat him nicely" she says and a boy with seamless green eyes enters. His dark brown hairs swept smoothly on his forehead. He waves with an angelic smile
"Hey! I'm Drew James" he says and words roll out his tongue smooth as butter and floats in the air.
Everyone greets him and Miss Jones fix his seat right before mine with the smartest girl in class called Jenna. I think fortune finally smiled upon me.
He come and seats on his place. "Hi I'm Jenna Friar" she says
"hey" he says
"And, yo! I'm Josh and this is Edith the monster" say Josh
"Aye!" I glare at him
Well, she doesn't seems like a monster to me says Drew and shakes my hand and my heart forgets to beat.
The entire day my mind is engaged on Drew. He is such a sweet boy with such a calm and gentlemen like demeanor. His manners are easy. He's the most agreeable person I've ever met and above all he is smart. Probably smarter than Jenna and definitely way smarter than Brain. On my one side there is Drew- an angle and then there is Josh who is right now sprinkling water on girls at the back bench.
For the first time I'm staring at the dichotomy of two boys in one glance. If one is black the other is white, one is fire then the other water. One is like a walk in a rose garden with a breath of scented fresh air and other is Island cactus and thorns.
