Red, a 22 year old commoner in his world, walked to his hometown's guild with a definite purpose. "Kid, weak people should stay away from the guild" warned a knight. Red replied, "I'm not here to apply for fighting anymore; I'm instead going to apply as the guild janitor." The knight looked at him with disdain, and said, "Well, that's probably the only way for a runt like you to survive." Red walked away with a newfound determination to prove the knight wrong. He was going to make a success of himself, no matter what it took.
Red rudely marched into the guild, fuming with anger at the knight’s disrespect. “Damn knight,” he muttered under his breath, “if I could, I could punch the heck out of you!”
Making his way to the reception, Red confidently declared, “I’m here to apply for the janitor job.” Instantly, a chorus of mocking laughter filled the hall. One man even sneered, “You’re so emaciated that even girls couldn’t do janitor work - you’d die trying!”
Red's temper finally boiled over, and he screamed back at the man in outrage. “I’ll kill you!” But his words were drowned out by yet another wave of laughter. Just then, the guild knight entered and proceeded to drag him out. “Wait, I haven’t applied yet!” Red protested, to no avail. “Not my problem - go back to the slums or something,” replied the knight, before pushing Red out of the building.
Defeated, Red trudged away sorrowfully, muttering under his breath, “Another day, another failure in finding a job… Is there anything I can do?”
Red then watches as warriors ride through his village on their horses, his heart quickens as he contemplates the possibilities of joining the warriors himself. Despite the fear of rejections due to his body, he decides to take a risk and do something outrageous. With a shout of determination, Red steps out into the middle of the procession and cries out, "Please, let me join the warriors!" He stands with bravery, hoping that this bold maneuver will be enough to secure his place in their ranks.
The warriors' faces all hardened as the captain said, "No, weaklings should stay where they belong." Red's fists clenched as he felt the insult of being deemed a weakling. He glared at the warrior and angrily stated, "You haven't seen me do anything yet and you consider me weak, is that really the way of a warrior or are you just scum?"
The warrior's face didn't change, but he knew his words had made an impact. He replied, "I didn't come here to chat with you I'm here to warn the village of the Demon Lord's catastrophe that's going to be approaching."
Red crossed his arms and snapped back, "That's no reason to ignore me."
In an instant, a sword was pointed at Red's eye, its speed so quick he barely saw it until it stopped. The warrior raised an eyebrow, being surprised Red didn't flinch. Red gritted his teeth and said, "Do you even know how many times people pointed a sword at me?"
The warrior looks at Red and shouts, "Do you have any idea how many times I've been hit by blades and swords, or how many arrows I took with my body!?" The warrior scowled, his voice dripping with anger. "I know, I know it's been hard for you, but joining the warriors is my only hope," Red responded in a quivering voice, his cheeks wet with tears. The warrior fixed Red with a stern gaze and said, "Listen, you're just too weak. You'll only slow the warriors down. I'm done talking." Red wanted to say something to try and prove otherwise, but he knew the knight was right - he was too weak.
The warriors walked pass Red ignoring him this time. Looking up to the sky, Red asks himself a deep question: "Is there truly a God in this world?". For 20 seconds, he just stands there, contemplating. After a while, Red decides to move on and walks on the other side of town, where buildings are crumbling, and some are forced to sleep outside. As some kids playing tag suddenly runs past him, he notices one had a limp leg. He sadly thinks to himself: "Why do people get treated differently when we are all the same?". At the edge of the forest, he stops in front of a tree that had something written on it "Lee." There was also a cross at it’s base. A tear ran down Red’s face as he said “Brother, I’m sorry I couldn’t save you that day, or even buy you a grave…”
"Can you believe it, you would have been 26 today Lee" Red said sadly as he looked up at the Tree with Lee's name carved into it. Just then an elderly man arrived, striding slowly towards him. "I knew I'd find you here, Red." he said softly. Red smiled at the old man. "Oh, evening grandpa. I know I'm not related to Lee, but why did you take care of us like we were your very own grandchildren?" Red asked, curiosity evident in his eyes. The old man's face twitched in surprise. "Haha, you do remind me of him," he chuckled. "Your question is almost identical to the one he asked me 5 years ago". The old man paused, a glint of reminiscing in his gaze. He then motioned for Red to follow as he pulled away from the Tree. "Come with me, Red. I'll tell you the story of why I cared for you both like my own grandchildren."
"When I first found Lee, it was amidst a town that was being attacked by monsters. Chaos filled the air, and I was about to run and leave when I heard the cries of a baby. I couldn't ignore it, so I ran towards the sound and there he was, a baby tucked away under the ruins of a collapsed house. Miraculously, he only had a few scratches - but then, something that should not have happened, happened," his grandpa said, his voice heavy with a serious tone, as if he were reliving the moment Lee had been found all over again.
