Tear
01. The bell
It was around 9pm. The smoke shop was empty and Shay was about to go home.
Shay
“Such a long day today…” *sigh*
Patrick
Hey Shay! Can you come earlier tomorrow and open the shop for me?
Shay
Tomorrow is my day off, Pat.
Patrick
Oh…is it?😬 Well, is not like you’ve got any plans for tomorrow right?
Patrick
Great then!😁Can you work tomorrow? And come earlier and open the shop? Sarah and I are going to a T-Rex presentation. I need to get some stuff from the supermarket tomorrow morning so I was wondering if you could cover me up…🥺
Shay
Don’t make that look please…You look like a twat
Patrick
I’ll pay you extra hours
Shay
You certainly will…Is the fourth time I cover you up this month.
Patrick
We have a deal then.
Patrick
Don’t be like that dude
Patrick
You know I’d do the same for you. You just never need to miss any of your shifts 😅
The door swung open and the little golden bell rang as a stranger stepped in
Claude
Oh…that’s too bad. I just ran out of cigarettes and I was hoping that living above a smoke shop could have its perks
Patrick
Oh you’re the new host. Let me introduce myself. I’m Patrick Goldsmith. I own this smoke shop, and the guy who rented you the flat upstairs is my dad.
Claude
Oh..nice to meet you Patrick. I’m Claude.
Patrick
This one over here is my employee Shay
Shay didn’t bother to lift his eyes of the accounting book.
Patrick
Well…we’re closed but I’ll give you a cigarette package and you can come and pay for it tomorrow
Patrick grabbed a tobacco package from a shelf and tossed it to Claude, who grabbed it quickly
Patrick
Okay. Tomorrow morning you come and you pay it to him. It was nice talking to you guys…But I’m off. Nice to meet you Mr…
Claude
I still prefer Claude
Patrick
Fontaine…is that French?
Patrick
Your English is amazing for a French
Claude
That’s because I was born in France but spent my childhood in London
Patrick crossed the door and left. The bell rang behind him. Shay lifted his eyes to the customer still standing across the desk
Shay
Oh…have a good night sir
Said this, he went back to his accounting, avoiding total eye contact with the guy
Claude
I’ll see you tomorrow then…”this guy is a total douche”😒
The bell rang as Claude exited the shop. Shay dropped his pen and sighed deeply. One minute more and he would’ve faded. For no reason he had felt his heart stopping when he had locked eyes with Claude. He had never felt that before and he was concerned about his health. He was maybe too tired.
Shay
“I’ve seen this guy before…somewhere…”🤔😩
Shay sighed and went back to his business. He forced himself to brush the thoughts away but unwillingly, a pair of blue eyes of a shade he had never met before kept coming to haunt his head over and over. He ignored that, as he ignored everything else in life. Because that was his best weapon: to be colder than anyone or anything else in the world.
