Throughout the era of China's Han dynasty through the Tang dynasty, one supernatural threat that was taken very seriously was that of the demons and various evil spirits.

Chief among these were demons or spirits known as wangliang who take many forms. The most feared of these where those who infect the homes and create diseases and illnesses, as well as the dreaded fangliang, an earth demon said to eat the liver and brain of corpses.

The one who fights these evil spirits and demons is a male character named "fangxiangshi".
The main duty of the fangxiangshi was to drive away evil spirits from home and protect funeral processions from flesh-eating demons, as well as to play a prominent role in the seasonal Nuo ritual, also called the "Great Exorcism".

Our story starts with a small baby found in a forest by a master-exorcist. The exorcist takes the baby to safety and wants to find him an adoptive family but he senses that this baby has a different energy inside himself, something that would make him a good exorcist in the future, that's why he decides to rise up the newborn and make him his apprentice.
