Loving Only You All Of My Life
Anna's Here
Dr. Park is busy in the emergency room of the small community hospital where she works. It is busier than normal because there was a bus accident.
There are a lot of people seriously injured and extra hospital and emergency staffing.
Dr. Park is standing at the side of a beautiful female patient. After a few minutes of thinking she decides to call her best friend. (Brent)
Brent is a 30yo teacher at the local high school. He is sitting in the teacher's staff room marking students' work.
Brent
*notices phone ringing*
Brent
Hi 👋 Tina. You are the last person I expected to get a phone call from today. I heard about the bus accident and just expected you to be busy at the hospital. Is everything ok?
Doc Tina Smith
Hi Brent. You're right. I'm super busy at the hospital. It's really crazy here. Are you busy right now? I know this is a bit of an out of nowhere request; but, (without asking me any questions because it will take too long to explain when I'm so busy); can you come into the hospital?
Brent
Ummm. This sounds like something I can't say No to. So, I guess I can come in. Should I rush in now and be there in 5 min, or is it ok if I arrive in an hour?
Doc Tina Smith
An hour is fine. Once you arrive, you may want to stay longer so bring yourself extra food.
Brent
Ok. I'll finish marking these papers and be there within the hour.
Doc Tina Smith
There are patients and staff everywhere. When you get here can you wait at the emergency door. I'll check for you everytime I walk past and when I notice you I'll come over. It'll be between patients so you may have to wait for me. You can also try msging me when you get here but I'm so busy I may not see it.
Brent
I can do that. See you soon. 👋
Doc Tina Smith
*Ends call before putting her mobile in her pocket. Takes one more lingering look at the lady lying there and moves back into the ebb and flow of tending to the requirements of the emergency room*
Brent
*hangs up his phone and continues marking papers*
Brent
(It's not like Tina to ask something without explaining.)
Brent
(I trust her completely with anything)
Brent
(I'd better do as she asks)
Brent
*spends about 15 mins marking papers*
Brent
Yes - Finally finished.
Brent
... just need to get food.
Brent
*goes to his apartment which is 5 mins from school and 10 mins from the hospital*
Brent
*quickly showers and gets into fresh clothes. Remembering Tina's suggestion to bring food, he raids his well stocked fridge. Absent-mindedly grabbing 2 flasks filled with soup and 3 of his school friendly lunchboxes. As an afterthought he also grabs a bunch of snack foods from his pantry. These foods, along with his wallet and mobile are shoved into his large, sturdy, well-used backpack.*
Brent
*Throws backpack on back and heads to car*
Brent
*drives the 10-minute drive to the hospital. Everything is a bit chaotic, so he has to be extra careful*
Brent
*After parking his car, he stops by the café and buys an Ice coffee for himself and a latte for Tina. Goes into the emergency room where Tina asked for him to wait*
Brent
*sends Tina a mob msg "I'm here"*
Brent
*Looks around at how busy the hospital is while he keeps looking for Tina and waits patiently for her*
Brent
(I'm so curious about why I am here)
Brent
*spots Tina and waves at her*
Doc Tina Smith
*busy with patients but notices Brent when he waves at her*
Doc Tina Smith
*looks at him, waves back and mouths "I'll be there as soon as I can"*
Doc Tina Smith
* 👍 to Brent*
After a few more minutes Tina is able to break away from her patients and comes to stand beside Brent
Brent
👋 Hello. Here. This is for you
Brent
*passes her the latte he had bought for her*
Brent
It may be cold now but it's still better than nothing.
Brent
I also brought an extra soup flask and lunchbox for you. They are in my bag - do you want me to give it to you now, so you can store it with your stuff or keep it in my bag, and you'll grab it later?
Doc Tina Smith
Hi Brent 👋 That's really thoughtful of you.
Doc Tina Smith
*Greedily gulps down her latte in one go*
Doc Tina Smith
There have been loads of trauma patients today, so the latte is really appreciated.
Doc Tina Smith
Your Nan's soup is delicious. Her soup flasks are the best to have on a day like this and I haven't eaten yet. Can I have it now as we talk? And I'll get the lunchbox off you before you go.
Brent
*smiling as he grabs the soup flask out of his bag and passes it to Tina*
Brent
I thought you wouldn't say No to this
Doc Tina Smith
*passes the empty latte cup to Brent*
Doc Tina Smith
Here's your cup back too. Sorry to ask but can you deal with rinsing it.
Brent
You seem really busy. I can do it for you today and you can treat me another day.
Doc Tina Smith
*Drinks some soup*
Doc Tina Smith
Yummy - it's even good when it's cold. It's just what I needed.
Doc Tina Smith
Ok - So can I ask you to walk with me a bit, and I'll explain what I can on the way through?
Doc Tina Smith
*assuming Brent says yes*
Doc Tina Smith
*begins talking while walking towards the female patient she had been looking at earlier when she called Brent*
Doc Tina Smith
When I was working today I was fortunate enough to tend to this patient. She's a female, maybe in her mid-twenties, with no ID. Due to confidentiality -I can't tell you too much more. I'm not sure if I've done the correct thing calling you in? But when I saw her all I could think of was calling you? She hasn't had any other relatives or friends come to check up on her or claim her, so I thought you may be able to sit with her. At least until she wakes up or her support people come. When we see her I think you'll understand without any extra explanation from me
By the time Tina finishes talking, Brent and Tina arrive at the beautiful female patient.
Doc Tina Smith
*gestures for Brent to look at patient*
Brent
*odediently looks at the patient*
Brent
(softly) This is unexpected
Brent
*grabs Tina's arms tightly*
Brent
(voice soft and shaking) Tina - is she ok?
Doc Tina Smith
She was a passenger on the bus that crashed earlier today. She's not going to die, but she does have a couple of broken bones and some internal injuries that will heal in time as long as she rests well.
Brent
She'll be ok as long as she rests.
Doc Tina Smith
Yes. That's what I said.
Doc Tina Smith
Brent. I have to go. I'm overloaded with patients.
Doc Tina Smith
If anyone from the hospital staff asks you'll need to tell them you are her family or you'll get kicked out.
Brent
I understand. Thank-you for calling me. Finish your soup so you can leave the flask with me and go back to work. I think I'll be sitting here for a while so just come back when you are hungry.
Doc Tina Smith
*Gulps all the remaining half of the flask of soup before returning the empty flask to Brent and going back to her work at the hospital*
Brent
*Puts empty flask and mug into backpack. Gets his mob out of his bag before closing it and placing it on the floor next to his feet.*
Brent
*Slowly sits in the chair that is placed next to the hospital bed and gently holds the hand of the unconscious patient*
Brent
*staring tenderly at the patient as he looks her up and down and assesses how damaged she is*
Brent
*continues to stare lovingly at her face as he holds her hand. He stays like this for an unknown amount of time as he intermittently gets lost in thought, remembers broken long-forgotten memories and wakes up in the present praying she rests well and heals quickly*
Brent
This time - please let me stay by your side 🙏💖🙏💖🙏💖
Little Star
... continues from hospital room setting
Brent
I've missed you so much
Brent
*happy crying at being reunited with the person he loves the most*
Brent
*sad crying because she's a bit damaged from the bus accident*
Brent
Why are you always getting injured. I hate sitting by your side at a hospital bed.
Brent
(Don't get lost in painful memories)
Brent
(It's too hard to get out once the nightmare returns)
Brent
(Remember happy memories)
Brent
(or make great present moments)
Brent
*sits in a trance at Anna's bedside enjoying the feeling of wrapping his fingers around the soft warm hand of his most precious person while his mind slips back into a memory from when he was 12 and Anna was 8*
Brent's Grandma has brought him along to visit her friend, Anna's Nanna for a "tea party" at her house. They are sitting at a table outside with lots of yummy food and tea cups etc. set up.
Child Anna
*excitedly walks out of house door towards the tea party table with a plate of cookies in her hands.*
Child Anna
*Places tray on table*
Child Anna
*Sits at table*
Child Anna
Grandma, Nanna Town!
Child Anna
I made these for you to have with your tea!
Child Anna
I bet they will be yummy!
Brent's Grandma (GT)
Oh hello Anna.
Brent's Grandma (GT)
Look how big you have grown.
Brent's Grandma (GT)
How is it possible - You shine even brighter than when I saw you last.
Child Anna
Do I really shine bright Nanna Town?
Child Anna
*laughing excitedly as she twirls around - she is wearing a dress so the bottom of her dress flares out as she turns*
Brent's Grandma (GT)
Yes Little Anna
Brent's Grandma (GT)
...as bright as an angel.
Child Anna
Does that mean I'm like a star?⭐
Child Brent
*watching Anna*
Child Brent
(Like the brightest star in the universe ✨⭐✨)
Child Brent
(but DO NOT 🚫 tell Anna that)
Anna's Grandma
These cookies look very interesting Bubba
Child Brent
*looking at cookies*
Child Brent
Mmmm Choc chip is my favourite.
Child Brent
*looking at Child Anna*
Child Brent
*grinning mischievously*
Child Brent
Little Star - Did you bake any for me?
Child Anna
*looking at Brent and poking her tongue out at him*
Child Anna
I baked these for everyone but you.
Child Anna
I won't even talk about the last time you ate all my choc fudge brownies....
Child Anna
or the apple tea cake...
Child Anna
or the ham and cheese sandwiches...
Child Anna
I get too angry even thinking about you stealing all the food that I make. I make enough for everyone and you hog it all to yourself and don't share
Child Anna
...and Grandma and Nanna Town never tell you off so you behave badder and badder every time you visit.
Child Anna
Don't eat any of my cookies
Anna's Grandma
(Gentle Scolding Tone) Anna please remember that Brent is out guest today and it's not kind to leave him out like that. That's not how ladies should act.
Child Anna
See - I get scolded and I've done nothing wrong but bake a plate of cookies for you all.
Child Anna
*runs back to her room*
Child Anna
(screaming and crying) I hate him. Why do I get told off and he doesn't.
Child Brent
*sitting at the table laughing at Anna as she gets upset... munching on the cookies she made.*
Child Brent
Whoops. I've accidentally done it again. I really didn't mean to eat them all. I was distracted watching Anna throw her fit and ate all her cookies.
The two Grandma's continue fawning over their grandchildren boasting about their latest misfortunes and achievements while enjoying their tea party.
When Brent's childhood memory ended another began...
Brent was about 22. After giving up his medical degree he'd come back to uni to begin his teaching degree. Anna was 18 and was also at the beginning of her University studies.
Brent
*sitting under a tree in a garden on university grounds*
Brent
*shoulders hunched and slightly trembling*
Brent
*not really looking too good - almost about to cry*
Brent
*feels someone gently shaking his shoulder*
Brent
*gets transferred out of his thoughts and into the present*
Brent
*realises there is a beautiful young lady gently nudging his shoulder*
Brent
*looks at girl and waves*
Anna
(Speaking gently in a worried tone) Brent?
Anna
... Brent - is that you?
Anna
You don't look so good.
Brent
*looking carefully with a concentrated effort at the person tugging his shoulder*
Brent
*I think I'm supposed to remember this person*
Anna
*stopped tugging at his shoulder and positioning herself so she is sitting next to him.*
Anna
I'm going to sit with you for a bit?
Anna
I really don't think you are ok?
Anna
*pulling out a lunchbox and a container of homemade choc chip cookies*
Anna
Here - In case you are hungry
Anna
*passes Brent the lunchbox*
Anna
I am on my way home now so I can eat at home. You can take this lunchbox and see if eating makes you feel better.
Brent
(I don't really want to take a stranger's lunchbox but I haven't eaten for 2 days and I am starving.)
Brent
*opens lunchbox. smiles as he appreciates how good it looks and starts munching on the sandwich inside*
Brent
Thank-you. I am actually really hungry and this looks delicious.
Brent
*starting to relax in the other person's company after eating something*
Brent
*still thinking I should remember this person*
Brent
(This lunchbox and this person's company really do make me feel comfortable - like I could blurt out all my problems - and she'd still be sitting here listening to me when I'm finished.)
Anna
You don't seem yourself?
Anna
You don't have to tell me anything but I'm going to stay with you until I think you seem better.
Brent
*suddenly started crying*
Brent
Everything's all a bit mixed up right now.
Brent
I cut off all ties with my family.
Brent
So I have no money and nowhere to sleep.
Brent
This is the first thing I've eaten for two days
Brent
When I tell people I am not going back and that I'm not taking anymore money from my family - Nobody understands.
Brent
I'm sorry to blubber about this to you but you sounded sincere in your concern and you kept asking so I felt safe responding.
Anna
You broke up with your family?
Anna
Penniless and homeless?
Anna
Starving and nobody understands you?
Anna
*gently holds one of his hands while she pats his back with the other*
Anna
That does sound like a lot to deal with.
Anna
I've spent most of my life trying to kill you.
Anna
Just this once - I really do understand you and I am sincerely truly proud of you.
Anna
*Finds the cookies she had gotten out earlier and takes one cookie out of the cookie box to place in Brent's hand. She drops the cookie box in his lap on top of the now empty lunchbox.*
Anna
I even have some choc chip cookies I baked myself yesterday. It's been a while since you've had them and your tastes have probably changed but I remember you used to really enjoy eating them all until I was so mad I felt like killing you.
Anna
Seriously, I know you don't tell anyone so that's why people don't understand.
Anna
But your family is very toxic - breaking up with them allows you to be free.
Anna
You can eat all my cookies today!
Anna
I might even bake you more tomorrow if you haven't annoyed me too much
Anna
...and I'll even let you stay at my house and feed you (temporarily) until you come up with a different plan.
Brent
*finally recognising his Little Anna *
Brent
(How could I not recognise her)
Brent
(Look how beautiful she's become)
Brent
(Don't let her catch me looking at her checking out how beautiful she is)
Brent
(Still the most beautiful person in my world)
Brent
(Just like Grandma used to say)
Brent
(How does she shine brighter everytime I see her)
Brent
*Hugging Anna tightly while crying*
Brent
Little Star - Thanks for understanding.
Brent
I'll definitely eat everything you cook for me... and I'll especially eat everything you cook for everyone who isn't me.
Anna
(laughing at Brent because he seems to be feeling better)
Anna
You finally recognised me?
Brent
*looking a bit sheepish*
Brent
It's been a while since we have seen each other
Brent
If you'd introduced yourself with the cookies first or by trying to kill me - I would have recognised you earlier.
Anna
Calm down and stop crying.
Anna
I've never ever thought my clothing would be drenched wet by your tears.
Anna
It's almost uncomfortable enough that I want to start killing you again.
Anna
If you're feeling better - you can let go now. I want to go home and get changed.
Anna
It's scary when you divorce your own family. Their will be outsiders who will never understand. But you really can stay at mine until your in a better place financially and emotionally.
Brent
So, I'll follow you to your home then.
Brent
Little Star - Thanks for recognising me, and staying by me and letting me stay by your side. I do feel better already.(but I never want to let you go)
My Brightest Little Star
Still in Brent's memory from meeting Anna at university
Anna and Brent are at Anna's apartment. They have showered, changed, eaten and are now sitting down in front of the TV while they drink some alcohol and chat. They are both quite tipsy now because they've been drinking and chatting since they got home. Neither is drinking to get drunk but they have drunk a lot so they'll probably get drunk.
Anna
*laughing and speaking gently*
Anna
It's been years since I have heard someone call me that
Anna
Grandma Town calling me that has always been the childhood memory that I treasure the most.
Anna
... given the situation
Anna
... I'll take you calling me by that name as another fond memory.
Brent
Really - I knew you both liked each other, but I didn't realize Grandma was so special to you.
Anna
... all my family ever did was tell me everything I did wrong.
Anna
They only wanted me to be exactly how they planned for me
Anna
Control... control... control.
Anna
...It was so exhausting to live like that
Anna
...and then Grandma Town would visit
Anna
*crying quietly to herself as she gets lost in telling her memory*
Anna
and she only ever said nice things to me. Her weekly visit made me feel so glittery, shiny and sparkly.
Anna
... just like a real star ⭐✨⭐
Anna
...even when everything around me was trying to break me I could get through it and be ok if I could remember Grandma Town telling me I shine the brightest.
Brent
(I am in 100% agreement with my Nanna that you shine the brightest.)
Brent
(I had better start watching how much more I drink because it will be very hard for me to not blurt out how right I think Grandma is)
Brent
(If Little Star hears me say something like that right now - she'll be trying to kill me again)
Brent
(I'll be penniless and homeless and starving again)
Anna
Even when I was planning to leave home it was Grandma Town who showed me how to set myself up financially away from my family.
Anna
She'd learnt how to do it because she'd set it up for herself and your mum...
Anna
hoping that one day your mum would break free.
Anna
it's a shame she didn't teach it to you.
Brent
(I'm glad she didn't teach me)
Brent
(If she'd taught me - I wouldn't have been broken down)
Brent
(and then I wouldn't have needed our Little Star to help me)
Brent
I don't know why mum stays.
Brent
I think she's too scared to leave
Brent
I begged her to come with me, but she wouldn't come
Brent
I couldn't stay with her anymore without it slowly killing me
Brent
Why should I spend my entire life doing what they plan for me
Brent
I just want to be me and do something that I enjoy.
Brent
Why does it have to be so hard to stand up to my Dad to do that?
Brent
Does he really think that his money is more important than my own self acceptance and right to live my own life?
Brent
Maybe once I am settled more financially she'll feel safer leaving with me.
Anna
(No wonder he always seemed so cold)
Anna
(His childhood was just as bad as mine)
Anna
(Except he did everything his puppeteering dad barked at him so he appeared excellent in the eyes of all the adoring families)
Anna
(the total opposite of me)
Anna
(I shunned their controlling at every chance)
Anna
(It meant I was always the worst at everything)
Anna
(I didn't realise Brent was feeling so pressured by everything)
Anna
(I guess neither of us were ever truly free)
Anna
*surprised that Brent was talking openly about his mum's situation*
Anna
(He normally tries to talk about anything except that)
Anna
(While he's feeling comfortable enough to talk about it - I should let him talk)
Anna
(It might help him to let it out)
Anna
I often think about your mum.
Anna
I'm so pig-headed and flare up at the smallest thing. I honestly don't want to judge her but I really don't understand how she stays with someone who controls and bashes her like that.
Brent
I know what you mean
Brent
but I wish that she would leave him.
Brent
I hope in the future I am strong enough to help her leave him
Brent
Do you think I am a bad son for leaving her there?
Brent
During the past two days since I have left there have been times when I start crying because I feel so guilty for leaving her.
Anna
No - I don't think that.
Anna
I understand why you think that.
Anna
I know you would have tried your best to convince her, but you can't force her if she truly doesn't want to leave.
Anna
Sometimes life is just shitty.
Anna
Tomorrow will bring another day, and we can choose to keep wallowing in that pain or trying our best to move forward throughout the present situation into a brighter future.
Anna
Only you can choose for yourself which path you'll take.
Anna
Personally, I think breaking away from your Dad's control is you choosing to move through the shit. If you keep making decisions that honor yourself; you will pass through this shitty time very quickly. Eventually your path will be clearer, and you'll be moving to a future where you get to be free from his control and happy with yourself.
Anna
I know you don't normally like to talk about this, but your Dad is the scariest person I have ever met in my life.
Anna
He never did anything cold or cruel to me, but there was always an awareness of what he was capable of doing to your mum. Look. I'm shaking and getting chills just thinking about it.
Brent
Little Star - You don't need to get scared. I'll never ever let you near him.
Brent
I was never aware of how much you knew about mum and Dad.
Anna
Grandma Town let it all out of the bag when she was teaching me how to separate my finances from my family. I'll never forget the nights she cried to me as she retold memories about your mum's injuries.
Anna
*looking at Brent directing her gaze directly into his eyes*
Brent
*looking at Anna directing his gaze directly into her eyes*
Anna
...but I still think you have a right to protect yourself. You did the right thing leaving. I think you are very brave.
Brent
Little Star - thank you for listening to me and talking to me so honestly about this. I do not know what I would have done if you hadn't found me this afternoon.
Brent
... I'm starting to feel ok about my decision and I'm really tired. I'm going to go to bed.
Anna
Of course. Now that you mention it - I'm really tired too.
Brent's mind remembers the last part of that night where he goes to sleep in the spare room of Anna's apartment and Anna retreats to her room for the night.
At that time he'd been so relieved that she'd been the person to help him.
Brent's mind is brought back to the present. He looks at Anna's peacefully sleeping body and is filled with despair. How can his Little Star be lying in another hospital this injured again.
Brent
(No matter how brightly you shine I just want you to be well and healthy)
Brent
Anna - My brightest Little Star
Brent
I've missed you so deeply.
Brent
Please wake up soon so I can tell you how brightly you shine.
