Adam meticulously organized his belongings, ensuring every item found its designated spot. As he settled into his new living space, he realized a box had been left behind. Determined to complete his task, he retraced his steps to retrieve it. With the box finally in hand, Adam reclined on the sofa, savoring a moment of tranquility, exhaling deeply.
"His new roommate finally arrived, Jay! Adam exclaimed, “good to see you again, man!” Jay responded, slightly flustered, "It's nice to see you too!" Adam's mind lingered on the rules Jay had established for their shared living space."
Jay emphasized the importance of respecting each other's possessions, recognizing their sentimental or monetary value. He stressed the need to maintain a warm bathroom environment to prevent catching colds, keep the house surfaces clean to avoid visible dust accumulation, and ensure a welcoming atmosphere for everyone in the house to enjoy.
Jay added one final request, asking for noise consideration, mentioning his sensitivity. Adam reassured him, "Don't worry, I'm not a party person myself; I actually dislike parties." Jay appeared surprised initially but then grinned in response.
After Jay settled on the couch, a brief silence filled the room. Then, breaking the quietude, Jay inquired, "So, do you enjoy reading novels?"
Adam, slightly surprised, responded with a tentative "yeah." Jay responded with a warm smile, and for the next hour, they engaged in a conversation about novels.
After expressing their thoughts, they both noticed the lack of another topic to discuss, leading to another moment of quiet in the living room.
Adam, noticing a 2009 camera, grew curious and inquired, "Is that yours?" Jay responded with a hesitant "uh, well..." in a frozen manner, indicating some hesitation about sharing the contents of the camera.
Jay eventually opened up and admitted, "Yeah, it is mine, but... I don't want you to see what's inside. Some of the footage includes people I'm no longer friends with, and I don't want to expose them. I'm known in my friend group as the overthinker and overtalker."
After a brief silence, Jay asked, "Do you know what's a ferret?" Adam shook his head sideways, and Jay's eyes lit up with excitement.
Adam, intrigued by Jay's discussion about ferrets, showed interest as he had never heard about that animal before. Jay, sensing he might have been talking too much, apologized, saying, "I'm sorry I got a bit too excited."
Adam reassured Jay, saying it's fine as he was genuinely interested in seeing the animal. Adam even had a joke in his head about how Jay's name is similar to a blue jay but decided to keep it to himself to avoid potentially offending Jay.
Adam, being the kind man he is, decided to cover Jay up with a blanket after Jay fell asleep. Later, out of curiosity, Adam searched up Jay's full name, and what he discovered shocked him to the core - he saw a missing picture of Jay. This discovery made Adam start having second thoughts about moving in with him.
Adam was starting to have a crisis about Jay, but when Jay woke up, he didn't mention anything. During dinner, Adam held onto his fork and knife tightly, feeling the tension in the air.
Jay looked at him a bit confused but simply brushed it off, not wanting to escalate any tension between them.
Adam, a bit frightened to say something, mumbled out, "So how is your relationship with your family?" Jay responded, "I guess it's whatever. We all respect one another, zero tension. It's quite nice to eat with them on Fridays and Saturdays."
"jay: “now that I think of it would you like to come with me next week to their house I promise nobody's crazy there!”, Adam didn't know if Jay was messing around or being the genuine"
After a taxing day at college, Adam returns home, feeling drained. Despite the exhaustion, he remains keenly aware that the individual he's engaging with, who claims to be Jay, is not the genuine article.
Adam sprawls on the couch, pondering how he ended up entangled in this situation. Suddenly, Jay emerges from the bathroom, greeting Adam with concern: 'Hey, Adam, you seem a bit down.' Adam glances at Jay, then averts his gaze, fixating on the floor, attempting to evade the interaction.
Jay: 'Oh, I have an idea to cheer you up! How about we hit up an ice cream shop!' Adam shoots him a slightly annoyed look: 'It's the middle of winter.' Jay retorts: 'You can indulge in ice cream anytime, regardless of the weather.
Adam's irritation intensifies, catching Jay's attention as he moves closer to the couch. "Hey, is something bothering you? Did a classmate get on your nerves?" Adam retorts, "Why does it matter to you?" Jay's gaze falls to the ground slightly, "Well, you're a new roommate, and even though we're still getting to know each other, I want you to feel at ease and settled in."
Adam finds himself torn between Jay's apparent kindness and the lingering doubt about his authenticity. A moment of silence hangs in the air before Jay rises from the couch, saying, "I'll leave you some space to ponder, sorry." With Jay's departure to the room, Adam remains lost in his thoughts,
unable to shake off the distrust towards Jay.
He dozes off, drifting into a dream where he's enveloped in darkness, whispers echoing around him, some distinct, others muffled. Confusion clouds his expression as he tentatively calls out, 'Hello?' A mysterious female voice breaks the silence, cryptically stating, 'Friday the 12th, you'll see, and you'll uncover what lies within the enigma.' Startled awake, he feels the weight of hard shells on his arms, releasing a mix of frustration and relief as he settles back, pondering the cryptic message from his dream.
He observes the profound quietness, finding solace in it as he rises to his feet. Peering into Jay's room, he notices the figure, asleep or whoever they claim to be. To dispel his discomfort, he opts to step out, grabbing his keys before exiting the house. The chorus of crickets serenades him, painting a ghostly ambiance in the deserted streets at this late hour. The eerie tranquility adds an intriguing layer to the scene.
He ventures a bit beyond the house and encounters a missing person poster seeking a guy named Jeff Woods or Jeffrey Allen Woods. The image and description depict a seemingly nice individual, evoking a tinge of sadness knowing his family is searching for him. As he follows the trail, a series of other missing posters emerge, each representing individuals ranging from ages 6 to 30. The proliferation of these posters hints at a deeper mystery surrounding the disappearances in the area.
Adam's thoughts swirl with confusion as he encounters the name Tim Wright or Timothy Joshua Wright on a missing poster, reminiscent of Jay's deceased article. The poster's declaration of Tim's disappearance triggers a lingering question in Adam's mind: How could the interviewers have spoken with Tim if he's also missing? The enigma deepens, casting a veil of mystery over the situation.
Adam's unsettling encounter with the mysterious figure in a suit leaves him with a sense of unease. Despite his repeated glances behind him, the feeling of being followed or watched persists, sending shivers down his spine. The eerie disappearance of the tall man intensifies Adam's growing apprehension as he makes his way home, each step weighed down by the invisible specter of surveillance.
Adam cautiously locks the door behind him, only to be surprised by Jay's unexpected presence. Jay, speaking on the phone, mentions to Samuel, "Oh by the way, is it okay if I bring my roommate along? I promise he wouldn't cause any harm."
Adam looked at Jay, curiosity in his eyes. “Who are you talking to?” Jay returned the gaze, a small smile on his face. “Well, since I'm heading to my family this weekend, I thought I might as well invite you. I don't want you to be alone at the house.” Adam smirked, “We both know we're not exactly party people, but I still don't want you to come back to a rager in here.” Jay chuckled, “Come on, you never know! Maybe you have a hidden social life we don't know about.” Adam rolled his eyes, a playful grin forming. “Yeah, right. My idea of a wild night is binge-watching shows and eating pizza alone.” Jay laughed, “Well, if you change your mind, you're welcome to join my family. It could be a good distraction.” Adam paused, feeling a mix of gratitude and reluctance. “I appreciate it, really. But I think I need some time to figure things out on my own first.”
Jay said, “Fine, whatever. Just tell me when you're ready to join. I'll be packing my stuff for a bit. Like I said, it’s the weekend; it’s family time.” Adam sank onto the couch, his thoughts still swirling, especially about the missing posters. He appreciated Jay's invitation, but a nagging fear crept in about what Jay might try to do while they were out of the house. A whirlwind of thoughts raced through Adam's mind.
Adam decided to watch some TV to refresh his mind, flipping through multiple channels, but nothing caught his interest—not even the kid channels. His thoughts drifted to worse-case scenarios. What if Jay tried to give him a tarantula? Adam shuddered at the thought; he was terrified of spiders. Or worse, what if it was a poisonous snake? Just the idea made him cringe. He needed to shake off these thoughts and find something to distract him.
Adam once again thought about Jay's offer but ultimately declined. He headed to the kitchen to get himself a cup of water, feeling a bit dizzy. He felt guilty, too, knowing that if he accepted Jay's invitation, he would skip church. If his mom or dad found out, he would be in serious trouble—“dead and going to hell,” as they would say.
Adam, having his own complications, finally decided to disobey for a bit just to learn more about Jay, even if it was only for one Sunday or Friday. After another sip of his water, he walked to his and Jay's room. Adam piped up, “Hey dude, I was thinking about your offer, and I guess I could go to your family’s house instead of church. I mean, we're just going to repeat the same chapter over and over again, and I'm getting sick of it.” Jay smiled wide, “Yippee! You're going to love it there! I’m telling you, we’ll have a bunch of food, including Mexican food like frijoles, and some traditional American food like steak! I just know you’re going to love it there!”
