Prologue
Celine Schlestor had always believed that love, once given, would never turn cruel. Yet there she stood, watching him the man who once swore eternity to her smile at another woman as if Celine had never existed.
The girl was not from their world. She shimmered like something divine, a being too bright for the empire’s dim marble halls. Everyone adored her. Even he did especially when he did.
And Celine? She became nothing more than a ghost in her own story.
At first, she tried to hold her dignity. To pretend his laughter with the other girl didn’t carve into her like glass. But soon, the realization struck he wasn’t just ignoring her. He was using the other girl to torment her, to remind her that her place beside him was nothing but an illusion.
When she found out, something inside her broke… and then reformed into something sharper.
If love could be used as a weapon, then so could hate.
So she turned to the one man everyone feared the Empire’s villain. The one her beloved despised the most. The one who ruled in shadows, whispered to command death itself.
And when Celine stood before him, her once gentle eyes gleamed with fire.
