The Jester

The Boy

I first saw the boy 1,246 years ago. He walked alone along an old, overgrown trail, trees and bushes circling the path and any animal nearby ran away as the boy walked. He walked slowly, as if he had no place to go, taking his time to only look forward, never once glancing around the woods. I was perched upon a tree, resting my head on the knuckles of my fist as I watched him slowly make his way down. He seemed quiet, uninteresting, lost if I'm being honest. He took random turns as the path would occasionally split off. Not only that, but he didn't have a direction, he'd go right and then left,, so on and so forth. I noticed at one point he carried a tattered bag, one of the arms was broken , and the other seemed close to falling off. There was a hole in the side of the bag, and it seemed like a small book or journal was sticking out.

I wanted a closer look so I went into the trail, my feet bare, slightly cold as it was the beginning of spring. I dusted myself off and walked slowly to him as he continued walking down the trail, again, taking a random turn as we walked, I got close to his bag and peeked in, matching his pace as he kept walking. It was a journal with something carved into the front. What did it say? I got closer to get a better look, squinting as the darkness of the bag restricted my vision.

Suddenly, the boy stopped, and only stopped. His breathing seemed to have hitched for a moment, as if something startled him. After about fifteen seconds, he slowly turned in my direction. He scanned around and let out a sigh of relief as he didn't see anything, no, not even me. How? You might wander, well, you'll figure it out eventually.

Anyway, after he scanned the woods, he seemed to have decided to turn back and walk home I assume. The tail of his adventure back is nothing special, he just kept quiet and boring. I followed till I couldn't follow him no more. Watching him from a tree as he kept walking down the newer trail slowly, only glancing back once before continuing to leave, leaving me alone once again to sit and think by myself till another potential unfortunate soul wanders out here again.

A month later, I was perched upon a tree and heard a buzzing sound, curious, I looked up and saw this flying machine, a drone in simple terms fly over and pass me. I followed it the best I could, passing animals, trees, and other places in the woods I haven't visited in a long, long time. After what felt like forever, the drone stopped in its tracks high in the sky over an old ruins, it stopped for a minute, before flying away once again.
