Haha, thanks. I’ve been working hard on this piece. Hope it’s good enough.
Kian
Don’t be silly. You’re amazing! Anyway, Ava says hi.
Lana
Oh… Ava. Cool. Hi back
Kian
Something up? You sound… off.
Lana
I’m fine. Just tired. I should go to bed.
Kian
Okay. Rest up. Big day tomorrow!
Lana stares at her phone, heart racing. She feels a wave of longing and frustration. She types and deletes several messages before finally settling on one.
Lana
(accidentally sends) I wish I could tell you how I really feel…
Her heart drops as she realizes what she just sent. Panic sets in.
Kian
Wait… what did you mean by that? 😳
Lana’s fingers tremble as she types furiously.
Lana
No! I meant… I’m just tired! Ignore that!

Her breath catches in her throat. Should she tell him?

(hesitates) I just… I care about you, okay?
Kian
Of course you do. We’re best friends. But it sounded like you meant more.
Her heart sinks. She feels exposed, vulnerable. Kian’s confusion only deepens her own.

(typing slowly) It’s nothing, Kian. Just forget it
But in her heart, she knows it’s not nothing. It’s everything.

Lana, I can’t just drop this. I feel like there’s something you’re not telling me.
Lana
There isn’t. I was just tired, Kian.
Kian waits a moment before replying, and Lana can feel the tension in the silence.

If something’s bothering you, you can talk to me. You know that, right?
Lana
(hesitates) Yeah, of course.
Kian doesn’t respond immediately. Lana stares at the screen, her thoughts racing. She doesn’t want to ruin their friendship, but pretending everything is fine is exhausting.
Kian
I just don’t get it. We’ve always been honest with each other.
Lana types out a message, then quickly deletes it. How can she tell him the truth? How can she admit that every time she sees him with Ava, her heart breaks a little more?
Kian
Look, I don’t want things to get weird between us, okay?
Too late for that, she thinks to herself.
Lana
They’re not weird. We’re good
Kian responds with a thumbs-up emoji, but Lana knows things have already shifted. The confession hangs between them, unspoken but undeniable.
Lana throws her phone on the bed and covers her face with her hands. She can’t believe how close she came to spilling everything.
Her phone buzzes again. She checks the screen, expecting Kian. But it’s a message from Leo, her colleague at work.

Hey, you okay? You looked kinda down today.
Lana smiles softly. Leo’s always been attentive, noticing things about her that no one else does.
Lana
I’m fine, just a long day. Thanks for checking in, though.
Leo
Anytime. You wanna grab coffee tomorrow? My treat.
Lana hesitates. Leo’s been nothing but sweet to her, and she could use the distraction.
She puts her phone away, heart still heavy from her earlier conversation with Kian. She wonders how long she can keep this secret buried before it breaks everything apart.

Lana
