It almost felt like a dream- my dream. It was becoming a reality. I stood at the exquisite hotel before me. Well, to be quite honest, it was just the beginning of my dream come true. ‘Just yesterday I got the internship but tomorrow I’ll get the HR position’ I positively laughed to myself. This was a big deal to me, huge for that matter. To be working in a high position in this hotel was one of the biggest goals I wanted to attain. Sure there were other jobs out there, but since I was a little girl I grew up watching this hotel develop. Since then it’d been my dream to contribute in it. Maybe I liked it so much because it was the last place I stayed with my parents before they died. Maybe it was the last connection I had with them. Plus, this could be my one and only chance to prove to my sister that I’m not worthless, I can earn something too.

After Mr and Mrs Dawnly took my older sister Jenna and our little sister Nina along with me in, life had been so different. I felt like I was a burden to them as I got older. I’m not sure how Jenna felt, but I had a feeling she saw it the same way I did because of the dark circles around her eyes. There was actually a time when I thought she was turning into a zombie. I stayed away from her for a whole week! Yep, no immaturity there what-so-ever. The Dawnlys have always been so good to us, they were like grandparents to us, old and considerate. Mrs Dawnly always made me laugh though, with her abnormal mind of a young person. It was a little disturbing watching her act like a twenty-two year old when she was actually seventy. And Mr Dawnly, well thankfully, he was normal.

He was like the lovable grandfather you could always talk to.

Getting this job was really important to me, I had to prove to Jenna I wasn’t a ‘resource sucker’ as she would call me. She made me so furious sometimes, pretending to be mother duck, saying she’s older than me so I have to listen. Please. If she wanted to boss around someone, then have her own kids. Well, first she’d have to start being nice. Ha, like that’ll ever happen. Actually, I’m wrong, she is nice to everyone but me and that’s the sad truth. I’ve never seen her be imperious to anyone else, not even Nina- but she was seven so that doesn’t count, does it? Anyway, the point of all this is to get rid of that horrid title she christened me with.

Yeah, no more ‘resource sucker’.

Entering the hotel I tried to be as calm as possible, as sophisticated as I could- so I professionally stuck my head up, shoulders straight, chest out—but not too much out to look trashy, kept my gaze firm and went to the receptionist to tell her that I came in to speak to the manager about my internship. Boy, that was so much work. Maybe I should reconsider this internship and teach with Jenna at the school. Nope, too late. It was a bit annoying since they told me to visit back today to collect some hotel guideline books for the place. Couldn’t they have given it to me when I got the internship position yesterday?

I felt my heart racing as I waited, the hotel’s interior was equally as beautiful as its exterior. The artwork was just exquisite, the marbled and white porcelain features highlighted the modern atmosphere. It was almost like I was in a palace. I tried to picture myself as an heiress of this beautiful palace. That would’ve been a dream. Although, I have a feeling it’s better I wasn’t. If Jenna can’t stand me now, how could she stand me as rich spoiled brat? As I mentally drew myself into another wonderful daydream I heard a sudden cough.

“You must be Ms. Juliet Greene?”

A man stood in front me with the most hardened facial expression I’ve ever seen. “My name is Johnson Martin, manager of the Empire Heights hotel.”

Crap. I stood to my feet greeting him with the most pleasant smile.

“My name’s Juliet Greene For short just call me Juliet Greene.”

He suddenly arched an eyebrow.

‘Double crap’ I thought realizing that I just made myself look like a completely brainless idiot repeating my name again when he

already knew who I was.

Don’t panic Jules, don’t panic. Act like Jenna would in a situation like this. Wait, Jenna would never be in such a dumb situation. Oh god…

“I’m so sorry, I’m just a bit flustered, I have a migraine that’s all.” I lied keeping the loveliest smile upon my face.

“I understand.” He replied with not a hint of understanding upon his face.

No, you don’t. You old quack.

“Anyway, you can read through these guidelines about our hotel’s standards, policies, etc. When you start you’ll be appointed a mentor, she’ll take care of your induction training. We’ll call you soon to tell you when you’ll start.” He continued giving me a stack of folders and guideline books before leaving.

Urgghh, I thought I had gotten away from all this studying. Way to go Jules, you’ve managed to complicate your life even more. Don’t worry, don’t worry, it’ll all pay off.

As I carelessly rummaged through the folders I accidently bumped into a man who was entering the hotel. The books and folders instantaneously dropped out my hand….and his.

“Oh God, I’m so sorry.” I blurted out embarrassed as I saw the guy wear a tired look at the things on the floor.

“It’s alright miss, it was my fault. Gentlemen open doors for pretty girls, not knock them down.

”I almost felt a blush run up my cheeks. The young man in front of me was slim and tall but there was this elegant yet cute boyish look to him. His soft blond hair framed his face and added a childlike feature along with his light blue eyes. It was almost like looking at the portrait of a highly defined French painting in the city of Paris. I’m not exactly sure how that would be since I’ve never actually been to Paris but I assume it fits his description well. Quickly, I picked up all my books and folders as he did the same with his stuff.

“Here.” He said giving me a paper of mine which fell out, “Get home safely miss, it’s already quite late.

”“Thank you.”

As I took the paper from him and headed outside I couldn’t help but smile from his kind words. Finally, somebody with a little class.

Chapter Two

While leaving the hotel, I neatly placed the loose papers into the guideline book when suddenly I saw a strange folder.

“This….is this one of the folders Mr Martin gave me?” I spoke softly as I continued walking.

Opening it, I saw some really peculiar stuff. Drug trade transactions? Italian Mafia reports? What the heck? There was another folder that hooked my eye, it was the draft of a partnership with some guy named Xavier Rocillie. Okay, so I’ve seen some screwy stuff but this one took the cake. That first folder was with legit illegal deals. It spelt trouble. Trouble. Oh crap! I was the one that would get myself into trouble- from Jenna. I had forgotten that she had asked me to collect a package from her friend Abby who lived across the park. Damn it, the last thing I wanted right now was getting on my sister’s bad side. I was there too many times before. Taking a deep tired breath, I decided to collect the package.A

s I walked through the park, I felt like was being watched. I’ve never felt so uncomfortable in my life. Knowing that I had a folder that could possibly get me sent to prison and having this feeling like I was being stalked did not sooth my nerves. I thought about the folders for a moment, maybe it belonged to the guy who I bumped into. No, but it can’t be his, I mean he never struck me as the mobster kind of guy. I’m probably over-reacting, he’s probably a lawyer or something. They have folders like this right? Sure, maybe, hopefully. It would be sad seeing a nice guy like him behind bars. I wanted to return the folders but the hotel was already a far distance away from me. Maybe I should just head home instead and collect the package for Jenna tomorrow morning, it’s faster to take a taxi at the nearby street and get home. Besides, I felt like the stares were weighing me down now. It was actually quite frightening. I’ll return the folders tomorrow as well. With that thought, I redirected my way towards home.

The cold night’s breeze laced through my hair so softly, yet this chilling feeling never left me. For some odd reason it felt like it was impossible for me to leave the park. Was I walking too slow? I only do that when I feel unsettled. I still felt the stares creeping up on me again as I walked across the park bridge over the deep pond. Trying my best to get home quickly also seemed like walking down a never-ending yellow brick road.

Abruptly, I felt a hand snake around my waist and muffed my mouth from behind. For some reason I didn’t drop the folders, maybe because of fright. I bit on the person’s hand to let go of me and luckily he did, but another man stood in front me. Around six other individuals approached as well.

This was not good.

They all wore these really weird eerie masks, something like the masks on ‘V for Vendetta’. It was one thing seeing it in the movie, but seeing it in front of you really was a different reality. A terrifying one. A creepy one. Who wears masks nowadays anyway? Surely they were all men since none of the individuals had the physique of a woman.

“Give me the folders girl.” One of the men said.

“No way buddy, this is my internship.” I replied trying to sound oblivious to the two strange folders I saw. No way in hell am I going to die for something I had no idea about.

“You work for Vandermir no?” another asked portraying a strong accent.

“What? No! I have no idea who Vandermir is!” I stated quite angrily getting frustrated of this.

“So you no know who Rocillie is as well?

”Wait, Rocillie? Wasn’t he the man from one of the folders? No, I couldn’t let them that I know this. They might actually think I have something to do with this crazy tra la la.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, now be a darling and let the lady pass.” I said as I tried to move away from them but one of the men stopped me, crushing my arm tighter.

“Aah! You Bastard!” I screamed.

“There are ways in which I can make a lady talk.” The man replied with the most vicious chuckle I’ve ever heard.

My body froze with fear, Oh God this man…I’m seriously going to die tonight.

Oh Jenna, I need you right now.

“I- I’m talking right now aren’t I? Do you need me to talk more than this?” I asked trying to buy myself time….For what? No one was coming to save me here, I was in the middle of an isolated park.

“I can make you say what I want to hear.” He replied huskily.

“Can you now?” a strange voice echoed from behind.

“Adrian Vandermir.” The man replied through gritted teeth.

Suddenly I felt the presence of a man beside me, he wasn’t wearing any mask but a neatly dressed black suit with a crisp white shirt inside and a navy blue tie, his face was actually quite handsome but his eyes so cold and icy- a dangerous shade of grey, it pierced through the man so sharply it actually scared him a bit and I was able to shrug away.

“I came to make a bargain with you actually, this girl here in return for a partnership in my next project. I’ll even cut you in 50% profit and throw in the fact that you’ll be the only limited partner.” The young man beside me said quite confidently as if he had nothing to lose.

What the heck? Was he bargaining for me? I’m not going anywhere with this guy, not even if he looks as hot as the burning sun. If he wants this folder I’ll give it to him but no way in hell am I going anywhere with a stranger.

The masked man gave a hearty laughed and so did the other men around us.

“This girl must be quite special to you Vandermir! It’d be a shame if anything happened to her! She’s your little girlfriend?”

“That’s not important.”

“Alright.” The masked man said as he turned around and began thinking of his decision.

Oh, this damned folder! How I wish I could just toss it into the pond right now.

I looked at the folder in my hand and the water beneath me…..how tempting it was to take my frustration out on both of them, I could just run away after. I mentally laughed even though it would be the worst plan ever. As if reading my mind, the guy held my wrist tightly and coldly whispered,

“Don’t be an idiot.”

Wait, did he just call me an idiot? Wow, what a nice saviour.

The masked antagonist turned back around, “I’ve made my decision and I decline.” He stated as he pulled out a gun towards us.

Before he could shoot another gunshot was heard.

It was fired towards him?

He yelled as he got the shot in his leg. Panic flew through me as I gave a shriek and dropped the folders.

“Damn you.” I heard the guy next to me say as he pulled out a gun and fired at the other men surrounding but not killing them. To my surprise, I saw the guy who bumped into me earlier along with two other guys fighting off the men. I swore one even winked at me. I tried to collect all the folders on the ground but one of the masked men yanked me by my hair up.

That’s gonna hurt for weeks.

“You little wretch! Trying to trick us! You called Vandermir here! You ruined our plan!” he roared as he threw me against the short concrete railing of the bridge.

My hands bruised as it took in the impact against it. In that second, the man kicked me in the stomach. It was brutally painful, I never expected it to be so gut wrenchingly hurtful at all.

“Vandermir wants us to choose? Well he’ll be the one choosing now. It’s his precious little girlfriend or the folders.” He said as he held me up. I couldn’t stand, pain consumed me.

Before I knew it, I felt like everything was becoming so slow paced. Without a second thought, he pushed me vigorously off the railing- off the bridge. Clutching onto the ledge below fear penetrated throughout my entire body along with pain, I knew I won’t be able to swim out- I can’t even move right now because of the pain- I’ll drown, God- I didn’t want to fall, I didn’t want to die but I felt so numb, everywhere ached. It was like a dream, a nightmare. I was so happy just a while ago. If I drown and die I won’t see Jenna or Nina ever again, I never said goodbye to them. This was it. I couldn’t hang on any longer.

Chapter Three

This girl was more than just a waste of my time. It wasn’t as difficult as I thought it was to get to her. Drenched and exhausted from this drama I coughed as I dragged myself and the girl on the park grass. She was unconscious at first but as I set her down I heard her cough up the water, she tried to open her eyes but suddenly slipped back into a drowsy state. “Adrian!” I heard Finny run up towards us.

Donnie looked at the unconscious girl and smirked, “You got her. I’m impressed with you Vandermir. Is she alright?”

“I’m fine.” I said in an annoyed voice ignoring his question about the girl.

She ruined this deal for me.

“Adrian what are you thinking?” Finny asked.

“Get our ride back now Finneas.” I nonchalantly replied.

Without a word he left to get the vehicle. Donnie looked at me curiously and asked.

“Really, what is going on in that head of yours? You’re not planning on leaving the girl behind, are you?”

“No,” I stated with a sigh, frustration slipping out of me as I ran my hand through my hair, “You know what would happen.”

“Wow, Adrian Vandermir shows compassion? What a day!” Donnie chuckled.

”No, the girl already knows what’s in the folders. If she runs her mouth to anyone and the officials gets to know about it then this deal has no hope.”

“But it’s not like we’re doing anything that illegal. We’re just getting back at Rocillie.”

“I know but there’s someone else I want to figure out.” I said with a smirk.

“And who’s that?”

“Those men who took the folders. I know it isn’t Rocillie’s men, I’m quite curious who they might be. Who would be interested in my dealings with Rocillie or perhaps my sponsorship funds? And the girl could help, I know she saw the face of the man who pushed her.”

“That’s why you saved her? To use her for info?” Donnie said a bit uneasy but shrugged it off.

Before I could say anything else Finny pulled up with our driver on the side. As we all sat at the back of the vehicle Finn looked at the unconscious girl lying on the long seat.

“What’s wrong with you?” Donnie asked him.“

It’s…. well….it’s just that I’m glad you brought her with us Adrian. Those people would have found out about her whereabouts and probably killed her or who knows what else they could do.” He replied with weary eyes staring at me, “Besides, they think she’s with you so there would be a high chance of them looking for her.”“Why do you even care? And personally I have other goals with this girl.” I stated coldly.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Finny, have I ever given you a reason not to trust me?” I said returning the glare.

“No. We all have our reason why we stick together. I just, I don’t want what happened to Melissa happen to this girl.”

“Your sister’s fate was inevitable Finneas, she chose that.

There was nothing you could have done to save her.” Donnie finally said. There was a sudden whimper that broke the silence. The girl was mumbling something, a name. Jenna. She sounded like a child crying from losing her mother in the mall. Annoying. We weren’t too far from the hotel, when we arrived Donnie placed her in my bed while I sat on the sofa right outside. Thank God Donnie had convinced the police that the gunshots were nothing serious and no real concern else the matter would have gone out of control. Making a cup of coffee for himself, I noticed Finny looking out the window like a lost puppy.

“She’s drenched. She could get sick.” Finn said turning around.

“Well knock yourself out kid, go change her.” Donnie chuckled raising his cup and his eyebrows simultaneously in a mischievous way.

“No, no that’s not what I intended.” he said a bit embarrassed it came out that way, “Fine then, forget it.”

“No, you’re right. My bed would get drenched.” I stated getting up and heading towards the room.

“Adrian! What are you doing?” Finny yelled at me in a startled manner, “You can’t violate a woman like that!”

I chuckled at his perception, “No, mother Teresa, I’m just going to make a room service call to the maid.”

“Then why are you going in the room?” he continued asking.

“To get a shirt for that nuisance of a girl of course. Unless you’d rather her wear nothing?” I smirked towards him.

“No, get your shirt.” He said in an awkward voice.

Almost twenty minutes after Ricardo came in with a frustrated look on his face, “I couldn’t get to them. They drove off faster than I could into one of those restricted areas when I ended up getting a flat.”

“What?” Donnie asked surprised.

“They shot at the tires. I was lucky enough to get out alive, the car blew up.”

“Damn it!” I breathed as rage seeped through me, “Damn this girl. Damn everyone.”

“Getting angry about it won’t help Adrian.” Ricardo said as coolly as possibly folding his arms.

“All this work I put into this project. Gone. And you expect me to not get mad? Do you know how much trouble I took to make this deal possible!”

Finally my anger subsided and a smirked played upon my face, “You’re right Ricardo, I shouldn’t get angry. If those men want to stick their nose in my business, I’ll give them all my attention.”
