Echoes of Tomorrow

The stranger in the vision

Rin sits on her bed, staring at her Echo Lens, replaying the fragmented vision of her standing over the lifeless body of the stranger. Her mind races with questions. The soft hum of the city outside her window grows louder as she zones out.

Rin."What does it mean? Was it really me standing there? No... it can’t be real. It’s just one possibility. That’s what they always say. But why does it feel so... inevitable?"

Her fingers tighten around the Echo Lens. Suddenly, her phone buzzes, snapping her back to reality. It’s a text from Kaede.

Kaede (text):“Don’t forget! Project group meeting tomorrow morning. 8 sharp. Don’t ditch, Rin!”

Rin puts down the Echo Lenz sighing.

"Maybe I just need some sleep... if I can even get any."

The next morning, Rin meets Kaede and their classmates at the school library. Kaede is her usual cheerful self, cracking jokes as they work on their project, but Rin struggles to focus. Her Echo plays in her mind like a broken record.

Kaede .“Earth to Rin! Come on, you’re spacing out again. Did you have another weird Echo last night or something?”

Rin.“Not exactly... I just didn’t sleep well.”

Kaede leans in closer, concerned.

Kaede.“You sure you’re okay? You’ve been acting off since yesterday.”

Rin hesitates, wanting to tell Kaede but feeling unsure if she’ll believe her. Rin.“Yeah, I’m fine. Just tired.”Kaede gives her a skeptical look but doesn’t press further.

Later that evening, Rin takes a detour on her way home, wandering into the quiet streets of the city. She tries to clear her mind, but the anxiety over the Echo lingers. Suddenly, she hears footsteps behind her. She turns around and sees a young man about 18 years old, with silver hair and piercing green eyes, watching her from a distance.

Rin.“Who are you? Why are you following me?”Stranger.“You’re Rin Akagi, right?”

Rin steps back, alarmed.

Rin.“How do you know my name?”

“I’ve seen you before. In an Echo.”

Rin freezes. The stranger takes a cautious step closer, raising his hands to show he means no harm.

“My name’s Kei. Look, I know this sounds crazy, but I think your Echo and mine are connected.”

Kei and Rin sit at a small café. The hum of city life outside contrasts with the tension between them.

Rin:“What do you mean, connected? Echoes are supposed to be personal.”

Kei:“That’s what they tell us. But what if they’re wrong? In my Echo, I saw you... standing over someone. A man. I couldn’t see his face, but I knew he was dead.”

Rin’s heart skips a beat. She grips her cup tightly, her mind racing.

Rin.“That’s impossible. That’s... exactly what I saw.”

Kei.“Then it’s not a coincidence. There’s something about these Echoes—something they’re not telling us.”

Rin leans back, overwhelmed. The idea that their Echoes could overlap shakes her belief in what she thought she knew about the Echo Lens.

The Warning

As they leave the café, Kei pauses and looks at Rin seriously.

Kei:“There’s one more thing. In my Echo, there was a shadow... watching us. It felt like... someone was pulling the strings.”

Rin shivers, remembering the dark, ominous feeling in her own Echo. She doesn’t know whether to trust Kei, but his words feel too real to ignore.

Rin:“What do we do now?”

Kei.“We need to find out what’s really going on. And we need to be careful. If someone is controlling these Echoes... they might be watching us right now.”

Rin glances around nervously. The city, once familiar, now feels hostile and alien.

Kei leads Rin to a hidden part of the city, where an underground group called the “Labyrinth” gathers. The entrance is guarded by holographic walls, and inside, the air is thick with tension. Rin sees people studying their Echoes on holographic screens, analyzing them like puzzles.

Kei:“This is where people come when they stop trusting the Echo Lens. They call themselves the Labyrinth because they’re trying to find a way out.”

The group’s leader, Ayaka, steps forward. She’s sharp-eyed, with short black hair and a commanding presence. She listens to Rin and Kei’s story with interest.

Ayaka.“You’re not the first to see overlapping Echoes. It’s been happening more and more. But the real question is... why?”Rin feels a chill. For the first time, she starts to wonder if the Echo Lens isn’t just showing possibilities but controlling them.

As Rin and Kei leave the Labyrinth, Rin’s Echo Lens flashes suddenly. Another Echo begins to play. This time, she sees herself running through a dark alley, her face pale with fear. Kei is chasing after her, shouting her name. A shadowy figure watches from the distance, its form distorted and unrecognizable.Rin.
