The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains, painting delicate streaks of light across Azure’s spacious apartment. She sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by scattered notes, scribbled lyrics, and half-finished sheet music. Her fingers tapped rhythmically on the strings of her guitar, but her mind wasn’t focused on the melody.
Azure (muttering): “He’s too sharp.”
Liam’s words echoed in her head. Don’t disappoint me. It wasn’t a threat, but it wasn’t casual either. The man had a way of looking through people as if he could peel back every layer they wore. Azure had lived most of her life pretending to be someone she wasn’t. Yet in front of him, she felt like every secret was dancing dangerously close to the surface.
Kai’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
Kai: “You skipped breakfast again.”
He placed a cup of warm tea on the table beside her and stood there, waiting for an answer.
Azure (smirking faintly): “I wasn’t hungry.”
Kai (calm but firm): “You’re always not hungry. Doesn’t make it right.”
Azure sighed and took the cup, wrapping slender fingers around the ceramic warmth.
Azure: “You worry too much.”
Kai: “And you don’t worry enough.”
There was a beat of silence between them before Kai sat down across from her, his gaze steady but softer than usual.
Kai: “You’re thinking about him.”
Azure (not denying it): “He’s interesting.”
Kai (quietly): “Dangerous.”
Azure shrugged.
Azure: “I’ve dealt with worse.”
Kai’s jaw tensed for half a second, but he didn’t argue. He knew better. Azure had lived through things most wouldn’t survive, and he was one of the few who truly understood what it had cost her.
Later that afternoon, they arrived at the company building. Azure was scheduled for a photoshoot, one of those high-profile magazine features that required hours of preparation, a dozen stylists, and way too much smiling for someone like her.
The studio was buzzing with activity. Hairdryers whirred, assistants ran back and forth, and photographers barked directions over loud pop music. Azure sat in the makeup chair, expression calm and detached as a stylist fussed over her already flawless skin.
Kai stood nearby, arms crossed, his eyes scanning the room like a silent guard dog.
Makeup Artist (gushing): “Azure, your skin is perfect! It’s hardly fair.”
Azure: “Good genes.”
The woman laughed nervously, mistaking Azure’s deadpan tone for sarcasm.
Photographer: “Alright, Azure! Let’s get started.”
Azure rose smoothly, rolling her shoulders as she made her way to the set. The camera flashes started immediately. She slipped into her stage persona without effort—the confident, magnetic idol the world thought was a man.
Photographer: “Yes! Give me that intensity! That’s the look everyone loves!”
Azure (thinking): If only they knew.
She was in the middle of posing when a hush fell over the studio. The atmosphere shifted, subtle but palpable. Azure’s eyes flicked toward the entrance. Liam had entered the room.
Dressed in a tailored black suit, Liam exuded the same cold authority as always. His dark eyes swept across the room, pausing briefly when they landed on her. There was no expression on his face, no sign of emotion—but his gaze lingered longer than necessary.
Kai (low voice to Azure): “He’s watching you.”
Azure (without breaking her pose): “Let him.”
Liam approached the set slowly, his assistant Jay trailing behind with his usual easy grin.
Jay: “Don’t mind us! We’re just here to check on progress.”
Photographer (nervous): “Of course, sir! Everything’s going smoothly.”
Liam said nothing, his eyes still locked on Azure. She met his gaze without flinching.
Liam: “You’re late.”
Azure tilted her head, amusement flickering in her eyes.
Azure: “I wasn’t aware I had an appointment with you.”
Jay chuckled awkwardly, nudging Liam lightly.
Jay: “I think he means the concert preparations.”
Liam (without looking at Jay): “I mean what I say.”
Azure (dry): “I’ll make sure I’m on time. Next time.”
Liam studied her for another long moment, then nodded once and turned away.
Kai (murmuring): “You’re playing with fire.”
Azure: “I’m not afraid of getting burned.”
Later, after the shoot wrapped, Azure found herself walking the halls of the building alone. She needed space, time to breathe. Pretending to be someone else all the time was exhausting, no matter how good she was at it.
She stopped by the large windows overlooking the city, her reflection ghosting back at her from the glass. She didn’t recognize herself sometimes. Not in the sharp suits, the tousled hair, the mask she wore so easily. And yet, this was her life now. The one she chose.
Liam’s reflection appeared beside her in the glass.
Liam: “It’s quieter here.”
Azure (without turning): “Maybe that’s why I came.”
Liam stood there silently, his presence as heavy as the silence that followed. He didn’t speak right away, and Azure didn’t rush to fill the gap.
Liam: “You’re hiding something.”
Azure finally turned to face him, her expression cool.
Azure: “Aren’t we all?”
Liam’s mouth twitched, but it wasn’t a smile.
Liam: “Some secrets are dangerous.”
Azure: “Only if someone’s foolish enough to chase them.”
For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes. Interest? Curiosity? It was hard to say. But then he stepped back.
Liam: “Don’t cause trouble.”
Azure (softly): “No promises.”
And then he was gone.
Kai found her not long after, his gaze sharp.
Kai: “What did he say?”
Azure (shouldering past him): “That he doesn’t trust me.”
Kai (walking beside her): “He’s right not to.”
Azure (grinning faintly): “Good. I’d be disappointed otherwise.”
Back at the apartment, the day settled into night. Azure sat on the couch, guitar in hand, strumming quietly. Kai brought her dinner, which she actually ate this time. He didn’t ask why. He never did. That was the unspoken agreement between them.
Kai: “You need to be careful.”
Azure: “I am careful.”
Kai: “No. You’re clever. That’s different.”
Azure didn’t answer right away. She set her guitar aside and leaned back against the cushions.
Azure: “Do you regret it?”
Kai (confused): “Regret what?”
Azure: “Helping me run away. Lying for me. Living this lie.”
Kai stared at her for a long time before shaking his head.
Kai: “No.”
Azure (quietly): “Why not?”
Kai: “Because you’re alive.”
She smiled faintly, a rare and genuine expression.
Azure: “You’re too good for me.”
Kai: “I know.”
They both laughed then, soft and brief, before the moment faded into quiet once more.
The next day brought new complications. Rumors were circulating online. Photos from the shoot had already leaked, and fans were speculating wildly about Azure’s relationship with Liam.
Jay had sent a message earlier: “You two are trending again. Liam says don’t bother explaining.”
Kai scrolled through the comments on his phone, frowning.
Kai: “They’re shipping you two hard.”
Azure (dryly): “As long as they’re buying concert tickets.”
Kai: “You think this is funny.”
Azure: “I think it’s useful.”
Kai: “It’s dangerous.”
Azure met his gaze evenly.
Azure: “We’ve been living dangerously for years.”
Kai sighed, running a hand through his hair.
Kai: “Just don’t get caught.”
Azure’s smile was thin and sharp.
Azure: “I never do.”
The days blurred after that. Rehearsals, meetings, interviews. Azure kept her mask firmly in place, playing the role of the charming, mysterious star everyone adored. Liam kept his distance, but she felt his eyes on her more often than not.
And then, at one late-night rehearsal, things shifted again.
Azure was alone on stage, running through the choreography. Sweat slicked her skin, and her breath came fast, but she didn’t stop. She never stopped.
Voice from the back: “You’re relentless.”
She turned, expecting Kai. It was Liam.
Azure (steady): “Perfection requires effort.”
Liam approached the stage, his steps unhurried.
Liam: “And pain.”
Azure: “That too.”
He stood at the edge of the stage, watching her.
Liam: “Don’t break before the concert.”
Azure (smiling faintly): “I won’t.”
Liam: “Good.”
He left as quickly as he had come, leaving Azure staring after him, thoughtful.
Kai’s voice sounded from the wings.
Kai: “You’re starting to enjoy this.”
Azure (softly): “Maybe.”
But she knew better than to let herself enjoy anything too much. Enjoyment led to comfort. And comfort made you sloppy.
And she couldn’t afford to be sloppy.
Not now.
Not when everything was just beginning.
