The Seat Across From Me

Noah Bennett
Age:25

The cafe was quieter than usual.
Rain tapped softly against the windows. I was sitting in my usual corner. Same table. Same black coffee. Same silence.
No expectations.
No conversation.
No one asking how I was.
Noah Bennett (ML)
Is this seat taken ?
I looked up.
He stood there calm, not awkward, not trying too hard.
He checked his phone. I stared at my cup. After a few minutes
Noah Bennett (ML)
You always sit here?
Ivy Carter(FL)
(I glanced at him.) Yes
Ivy Carter(FL)
I prefer it.
He didn't look offended. He just nodded.
Noah Bennett (ML)
I'm Noah
I don't know why but the way he said my name felt different. The barista called his order. Before leaving, he said
Noah Bennett (ML)
See you around, Ivy
And for some reason, I hoped he meant it.
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬Hey. It's Noah. Cafe guy.
I stared at the message for a full minute
Ivy Carter(FL)
💬How did you get my number?
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬You left your notebook on the table. Your number was on the first page.
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬I can bring it tomorrow. Same time?
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬Goodnight, Ivy
I types. Deleted. Typed again.
And for the first time in a long time . I didn't feel completely invisible.
Same Time Tomorrow
The next evening, I told myself I wasn't nervous. I was just going to collect my notebook. That's it.
But I still reached ten minutes early.
He was already there. Same table. Two coffee. One black , One with milk.
Ivy Carter(FL)
You remembered
Noah Bennett (ML)
You look like someone who drinks black coffee.
Ivy Carter(FL)
I look that sad?
He smiled not teasing, not pitying.
Noah Bennett (ML)
No. You look strong.
I didn't know what to say to that . He handed me my notebook.
Noah Bennett (ML)
You Write?
Ivy Carter(FL)
Nothing important
He studied me for a second .
Noah Bennett (ML)
I don't think you're the type to write about nothing.
My chest tightened. No one had ever said that before.
We sat there longer then yesterday. Talking about small things . Work, the city, the terrible traffic.
But between the normal conversation, there were pauses. Not awkward. Just quite, comfortable.
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬Did you get home safe?
I stared at the message. No one had asked me that in a long time.
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬You don't talk much.
Ivy Carter(FL)
💬I do when it matters.
Noah Bennett (ML)
Maybe it matters now.
I didn't reply for a while
Ivy Carter(FL)
💬Why are you trying?
The typing bubble appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬I'm not trying. I just don't think you should sit alone every evening like you're waiting for something that never comes.
Ivy Carter(FL)
💬You don't know me
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬You're right. But I'd like to
I locked my phone because that was dangerous.
And for the first time in a while. I was scared of something good.
The Distance I Create
I didn't go the cafe the next day . Or the day after that . I told myself I was busy. Work was exhausting. I needed rest. But the truth was simple.
Noah was starting to feel familiar. And familiar things leave. On the third evening, my phone buzzed
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬No black coffee today?
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬Three days busy
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬Did I say something wrong?
My chest tightened.
why did he care?
Ivy Carter(FL)
💬Then why does it feel like you disappeared ?
Because disappearing is easier. Because if I leave first. It won't hurt when you do.
Ivy Carter(FL)
💬I'm just not used to this
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬Used to what?
Ivy Carter(FL)
💬Someone noticing
There was a long pause before he replied.
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬I'm not asking you for anything, Ivy. Not your past. Not your secrets. Not even your time. I just enjoy sitting across from you.
That scared me more than anything. No expectations. No pressure. Just staying.
I put my phone down. Ten minutes later, it buzzed again.
Noah Bennett (ML)
💬I'll still be there tomorrow. Same time. In case you decide not to run.
That word felt too accurate.
The next evening. I found myself standing outside the cafe. I culd leave. I should leave. But through the glass, I saw him. Same table. One coffee in front of him.
And one empty seat across from him. Waiting. And for the first time I my life.
Someone was waiting for me .
