The Facade

The Past

The Kingdom of Makees was built on unshakable pillars — its four Grand Dukes were said to be the strongest shields of the realm. Among them, none was more feared and respected than Grand Duke Cyric Mackvort, a man whose sword could bring down armies and whose loyalty to the crown was said to be unmatched.

But Cyric Mackvort’s name was also whispered in shadows for another reason — a scandal buried in tragedy.

---

Seventeen Years Ago

Cyric had been a man of honor, devoted entirely to his beloved wife, Miana. She was the light in his cold, disciplined world — gentle, graceful, and the one person who could soften his sharp, unyielding gaze.

Then came Irena — a woman from a lesser noble house, ambitious and clever in the cruelest of ways. One night, she drugged Cyric, ensuring the encounter was never his choice. Weeks later, she bore the news she carried his child.

The revelation tore through the Mackvort household like a blade.

When Miana heard of it, the betrayal — though unintended — was too much for her fragile heart. On a storm-tossed night, she took her own life. Cyric found her lifeless in their chambers, her fingers still clutching the blue silk ribbon he had once tied in her hair. The sound he made that night was not a human cry — it was the hollow roar of a man whose soul had been ripped apart.

From that moment, the Cyric the world had known ceased to exist.

The Cold Years

Cyric did not forgive. He could not forgive. And his hatred fell entirely upon the child Irena had borne — Rosaline.

To him, she was the living embodiment of the night he lost Miana. He never once called her “daughter.” He never once looked at her without that silent accusation burning in his eyes.

In the vast Mackvort estate, Rosaline lived like a ghost in her own home. She learned early that silence was her only armor. The grand halls and glittering ballrooms of the mansion were not hers to walk. Servants ignored her unless it was to pass an order with cold detachment. The head maid, a sharp-eyed woman loyal only to Miana’s memory, ensured Rosaline’s existence was a constant reminder that she was unwanted.

Her half-brothers — Mason (27) and Valon (26) — grew into men shaped by their father’s severity but not his grief. They didn’t speak much to her, not out of cruelty, but because the household atmosphere made it seem natural to keep their distance.

Then there was Saya (20) — the youngest, the darling of the family, the very image of Miana. Where Rosaline’s dark hair and amber eyes marked her as Irena’s child, Saya’s golden hair and gentle green eyes were Miana reborn. Everyone adored her. Everyone protected her.

And yet, Saya was the knife that cut Rosaline without ever trying — because no matter what Rosaline did, she would never be seen the way Saya was.

Irena’s Fate

As for Irena Mackvort, the title of “Grand Duchess” was hers in name alone. Cyric never touched her again, never gave her the dignity of a place by his side. She lived in a separate wing of the estate — the shadowed wing, where light seemed to fall dimmer. The servants treated her with the same cold dismissal they gave her daughter.

And though she never openly defied anyone, Irena carried her own quiet pride. She still dressed finely, still spoke with elegance, but it was hollow — a performance for a stage where no one was watching.

Worse still, whispers followed her everywhere. Whenever Saya so much as stumbled or fell ill, someone would mutter that Irena or Rosaline must have had a hand in it. The head maid herself would sometimes stand in the middle of the drawing room and announce that “the mistress had been seen lurking near the young lady’s chambers.”

It was never true. But no one cared. In the Mackvort household, truth mattered less than loyalty — and all loyalty belonged to the memory of Miana.

---

By the time Rosaline turned twenty-three, the years of cold walls and colder gazes had shaped her into a woman the kingdom would soon call a villainess.

But in truth, she was something far more dangerous — a woman forged in silence, who had learned that if the world saw her as a villain… she might as well become one.
