The Mermaid Deity

The net of fate

The sea was calm that morning, its surface shimmering with streaks of gold as the first light of dawn caressed the endless waters. Beneath that glistening veil, a small figure darted between corals and ribbons of seaweed. She was no ordinary child of the sea. Her name was Annette, a mermaid of seven summers, with hair as pale as the pearls hidden in the oyster beds and eyes the color of a storm just before it broke.

Annette loved to play alone, far from the watchful gaze of her kin. She was fearless, curious, and full of laughter that echoed like silver bells through the water. On this day, she had discovered a cluster of bright, gentle starfish clinging to a rock bed. Their tiny arms wriggled when she poked them, and Annette giggled, scooping one into her small hands.

“Dance with me,” she whispered, spinning through the water, her tail glittering in streaks of turquoise. The starfish clung tightly as though it understood, and Annette twirled until her laughter melted into the sea.

But joy often hides danger beneath its surface.

A shadow loomed above, vast and alien. A fisherman’s boat drifted lazily in the shallows, its crew casting nets wide into the sparkling water. Annette, too enthralled with her play, noticed nothing—until the world around her darkened and the starfish slipped from her hand.

The net fell like a curtain, heavy with ropes weighted by stones. Before she could swim away, its mesh tightened around her small frame. Panic clawed at her chest. Her tail thrashed desperately, the scales flashing like broken rainbows, but the more she struggled, the deeper the cords cut into her tender skin.

She cried out, but her voice was swallowed by the water. The net dragged her upward, closer to the surface where the light burned brighter and the air shimmered with heat. To Annette, the surface was a forbidden veil—her mother had always warned her never to rise too high, for the world above was cruel and heartless.

Yet here she was, ensnared, trembling, her heart racing like a frightened bird.

The fishermen above laughed at their catch, though none of them could see what truly tangled in their net. To them, it was just the drag of the sea, a weight of kelp and fish that would soon glimmer in the sun. Annette’s small fingers clutched at the cords, tugging, twisting, but the rope only bit deeper, scraping her delicate arms.

Her breaths grew shallow, each one painful. Salt burned her wounds. A starfish floated nearby, watching silently as if helpless to save her.

She thought of her mother’s stories—of mermaids who vanished in the nets of men, their songs lost forever. Fear clawed at her, but beneath it a spark of defiance stirred. She would not end here, broken and displayed like some trophy.

With a sudden surge, she twisted her body, the scales of her tail glimmering like shards of sunlight. The rope strained, fibers snapping under her force. Pain seared through her side where the cords cut deepest, yet she pushed harder. Her small form writhed like a trapped bird until—finally—one corner of the net tore open.

Annette slipped free, leaving behind strands of her hair caught in the cords. She darted downward, away from the blinding light of the surface, her chest heaving. Her wounds throbbed, streaks of crimson unfurling into the sea around her.

Weakness tugged at her. The playful energy that had filled her only moments ago now ebbed away like a tide receding. Her tail flickered slower, her arms trembling as she pushed through the water. The starfish she had played with drifted after her, as if reluctant to leave.

At last, her strength failed. The waves carried her toward the shore, where the sea kissed the land with foamy hands. Annette’s body washed gently onto the soft sand, her long hair tangling with seaweed. She closed her eyes, her chest rising in shallow gasps, exhaustion pulling her into a fragile sleep.

The world above was strange—warm air brushing her skin, the sound of gulls crying in the distance. She had never felt the ground beneath her, never smelled the wild fragrance of earth and salt mingled together.

For the first time, Annette lay between two worlds: the sea that birthed her, and the land that would soon alter her fate.

And though her young heart trembled, the ocean whispered around her—its waves curling gently as though protecting her in her slumber. Fate had cast its net, and destiny had begun to weave its first knot.

The boy by the shore

Annette stirred in her sleep, the warmth of the sun stroking her damp skin. Her small chest rose and fell in shallow breaths, each movement wincing with the sting of wounds. The sand beneath her was soft, yet her body felt heavy, as though the sea had stolen all her strength when it let her go.

For a long while, she did not move. The waves curled around her legs, retreating only to return again, as if reluctant to leave their child behind. A trail of saltwater pearls clung to her lashes, and her lips parted slightly with the whisper of a dream.

When she finally opened her eyes, the brightness of the world startled her. The sky was endless and vast, painted in shades of blue she had never known. Clouds drifted lazily, white and soft like floating shells. She blinked, her vision blurred by sunlight.

Then a shadow fell across her.

She gasped softly. Looming above her was a boy—not much older than herself, perhaps eight. His hair was dark and windswept, sticking in wild directions as though the sea breeze played with it. His eyes were wide, unblinking, shining with wonder.

Annette’s heart raced. She had never been this close to a human before. Her mother’s warnings echoed in her ears: Never trust those who walk the land. They desire what they cannot understand. Instinct made her body tense, her fingers digging into the sand, tail twitching in alarm.

The boy, however, did not move closer. He simply stared, his mouth slightly open in awe. Then, almost breathlessly, he whispered: “Wow…”

Annette froze. His voice was light, gentle, and full of something she could not name. Not fear. Not cruelty. It was… amazement.

“I’ve never seen anything like you before,” the boy continued, kneeling slowly so he would not startle her. His knees pressed into the sand, leaving little impressions beside her. “Are you… real? A mermaid?”

His words tumbled like small stones, unpolished but honest.

Annette’s lips trembled. She had no reason to reply, but something in his gaze—so innocent, so pure—lost the knot in her chest. Her voice, though weak and shaken, slipped from her like a secret.

“Annette,” she whispered.

The boy tilted his head, blinking. “Annette? That’s your name?”

She nodded faintly.

His smile bloomed like sunlight breaking through clouds. “Mine’s Reiner. Nice to meet you, Annette.”

Her name on his tongue felt strange, almost too tender. She stared at him, still wary, but curiosity stirred in her heart. Humans were said to be greedy, yet this boy looked at her as though she was a treasure beyond value.

Reiner’s eyes darted to the faint cuts along her arms and tail. “You’re hurt,” he said softly. “Did the sea do that?”

Annette hesitated, her gaze lowering. She remembered the suffocating net, the harsh cords biting into her skin. “The… men’s trap,” she muttered, barely audible.

Reiner frowned, his brows knitting with concern. For a child, he carried a surprising weight in his expression, a seriousness that Annette felt deep inside her chest. He reached out, then stopped, unsure if he should touch her.

“Do you… want some help?” he asked gently.

The offer surprised her. No human had ever asked a mermaid what she wanted. They usually took, captured, or destroyed. Yet there was a boy, asking.

Annette searched his face, trying to read if there was any trick hidden in his voice. But she saw nothing except kindness. Slowly, she gave the smallest nod.

Reiner’s grin returned, though softer this time. “Okay. I’ll get you back to the sea.”

Carefully, he slid his small hands beneath her arm, supporting her as best as he could. She was light, delicate, her scales glistening beneath his touch. Though his movements were clumsy, he carried her with all the care he had, step by step toward the waves.

The ocean welcomed her instantly, curling around her body like a mother reclaiming her child. She sighed as the saltwater touched her wounds—it stung, but it was also home.

Reiner waded in until the waves reached his knees, holding her steady. “There,” he said proudly, his voice almost triumphant. “Safe again.”

Annette floated, the water lifting her body, but she didn’t leave right away. Her eyes clung to his face, memorizing the way his smile looked, the way his hair caught the light. Something about him felt important, though she didn’t know why.

He lifted his hand, waving shyly. “One day, we’ll meet again. I promise.”

Her lips curved into the faintest smile. “We’ll,” she echoed softly, her voice like a ripple on the water.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other—two children from different worlds, bound by a promise neither fully understood. Then Annette flicked her tail, and with a shimmer of scales, she disappeared beneath the waves, leaving only bubbles behind.

Reiner stood there long after she was gone, staring at the water as if trying to believe it had truly happened. And though he could not see her anymore, Annette’s laughter echoed faintly beneath the waves, carrying their first memory deep into the ocean’s heart.

The promise

The sun had already begun to sink lower, painting the horizon with strokes of amber and rose. Reiner lingered at the edge of the sea, his toes buried in wet sand, the water curling gently around his ankles. His small hands still tingled with the memory of holding Annette, the strange and beautiful creature who felt so impossibly fragile in his arms.

For a while, he wondered if it had been a dream. But then, the sea stirred. A shimmer of turquoise broke the surface, and Annette rose once more, her wet hair clinging to her shoulders, eyes bright despite her injuries.

Reiner gasped softly. “You came back!”

Annette tilted her head, her lips curving faintly. “I said we’ll… didn’t I?”

Her voice was like a soft ripple—delicate, but steady. She floated just beyond the waves, her tail lazily flicking beneath the water, scales catching the fading light.

Still, Reiner could see the bruises on her arms, the small cuts across her skin. “Does it hurt?” he asked, almost whispering, as though the question itself might wound her.

“A little,” Annette admitted. “But the sea will heal me.”

Silence fell between them for a moment, broken only by the cries of gulls above and the lapping of the waves. Neither of them truly understood what was happening, yet they felt something—an invisible thread pulling their hearts closer.

Reiner crouched at the edge of the shore, studying her carefully. His curiosity outweighed his fear, and finally, he asked the question that had been pressing against his lips since the first moment he saw her.

“What are you?”

Annette blinked, then smiled faintly, as though she expected such a question. “A mermaid,” she said simply.

Reiner’s eyes widened. “So… you live under the sea?”

“Yes.” She glanced behind her, where the horizon stretched endlessly. “That’s my world. My family, the corals, the fish… everything lives down there. But we’re told not to come too close to humans.”

Reiner tilted his head. “Why not?”

Annette hesitated. She thought of her mother’s warnings, of the dark tales whispered about nets, ships, and human greed. “Because humans take,” she said softly. “They don’t understand us.”

The boy frowned. “Not all humans.” He pressed his small fist to his chest, eyes shining with a sudden fire. “I wouldn’t take you. I just want to… be your friend.”

Annette’s lips parted slightly in surprise. She studied him, trying to see if he was lying, but his face was open, earnest, filled with a light she had never seen before.

Her heart fluttered, a strange warmth blooming in her chest. “Friend?” she echoed, tasting the word.

Reiner nodded eagerly. “Yes! We can’t be the same, but we can… still care, right?”

For the first time since she’d been trapped in the net, Annette laughed—a soft, tinkling sound that blended with the sea breeze. “You’re strange, Reiner.”

“Strange?” he grinned. “Maybe. But then again, you’re strange too.”

They both laughed this time, the sound carrying over the waves like a secret song only they could hear.

When the laughter faded, a quiet calm fell over them. The world seemed to pause—the ocean holding its breath, the sky waiting.

Reiner leaned forward, his voice serious now. “One day,” he said, “we’ll meet again. When we’re older. When I’m stronger. I’ll find you, Annette.”

Her eyes softened. She didn’t fully understand promises; in her world, time flowed differently, days melting into tides. But there was something in the way he said it, firm and bright, that made her believe.

“One day,” she whispered back. “We’ll.”

The waves swelled gently between them, like a vow sealed in saltwater and sunlight.

Annette gave one last glance at his small, determined face before the sea pulled her back into its embrace. Her tail flashed once, twice, then she was gone, swallowed by the deep blue.

Reiner remained on the shore, his little fists clenched at his sides. He was only eight years old, yet already he felt the weight of something larger than himself. He had seen her, touched her, spoken to her. And now, he carried her name like a treasure against his heart.

“Annette,” he whispered into the wind.

The sea answered with a soft sigh, as if promising it would keep her safe until the day they met again.

And so, under a sky turning violet with night, a boy and a mermaid parted ways—bound forever by a fragile promise, carried on the tides of fate.
