Red curtains curled to ash, Chandeliers fell like meteors. The air was smoke, fire and screams

They played.
Adrian Blake pulled out a deck slick with ash. His fingers slipped, a spade slicing his palm open. Blood marked the cards, sealing his bond with poker forever. But he wasn’t shuffling for himself—he was shuffling to keep Harper covered as the roof caved.
Adrian Blake
Harper! Hold on! I’ll keep you safe—don’t you dare move!
Aria Blake clenched dice so hot they burned into her flesh. She didn’t throw for herself—she threw for Adrian. The roll of destiny bent the fire, a pair of snake-eyes scattering falling beams away from her twin.
Aria Blake
Adrian! You cover her—I’ll cover you! If I burn rolling dice, I burn with you!
Marcellus Lane seized a half-melted roulette wheel. The sharp edges bit into his wrists until blood ran over the numbers. He spun, every drop of blood sealing his pact. The wheel screamed as it landed true, reality warping to shield his siblings from the falling inferno.

Harper Lane had nothing—no deck, no dice, no wheel. Only a single casino chip trembling in her fist. She tried to throw it away, but Adrian shoved it back into her hands, his palm bleeding.

Aria Blake
The House always wins—so win for us, Harper!
Harper’s tears hit the chip. It glowed gold, and the fire itself bent backward, bowing to her will.

Shadows in suits linger just beyond the fire’s glow. Not police. Not firemen. Eyes sharp, greedy. Hungry.

Looks like the game’s not over yet.
Aria Blake
Good. I’ve got more rolls in me.
