The Syllabus of Us

EPISODE 1: The Reckless Gaze

The cool, metallic sheen of Seo-jin University was Han Ji-won’s sanctuary. At thirty-one, she was a triumph of discipline, the prized daughter of a legendary legal firm, her every professional achievement, a perfectly calibrated shield. Her future was clear: tenure, prestige, and a life of untouchable elegance. Nothing could fracture it.

In her final seminar, just as she was delivering the introduction on market stability, the heavy oak door opened.

Lee Do-yun stepped into the room.

He wore a dark, faded hoodie that made the other students' designer suits look costume-like. His posture was too relaxed, his hands shoved casually in his pockets. Ji-won knew the files: Lee Do-yun—final year undergraduate, scion of the powerful Lee family of doctors and politicians. More crucially, the son of the man who owned this university. His presence was an entitled challenge to her authority, and his reckless gaze was an immediate threat to her composure.

"You're late, Mr. Lee," she stated, her voice a sheet of cold glass.

"My apologies, Professor Han." His voice was liquid velvet, deep and unhurried. He took the last empty seat, never breaking eye contact.

Ji-won finished the lecture on autopilot. The moment the last student filed out, she felt a profound wave of relief, quickly followed by paralyzing terror. She had to address him. Alone.

She gathered her files, her hands trembling subtly against the leather. Her office door clicked shut, leaving them in the contained silence, the light glinting off the polished mahogany desk.

"Your attendance and your attitude are unacceptable," she began, the familiar script feeling flat. "Your family name does not grant you immunity in my class, Do-yun-ssi."

He didn't sit. He merely walked closer, his presence immediately swallowing the air in the small room.

"It’s not my family name that grants me immunity, Professor," he murmured, his eyes sweeping over her perfect, black silk attire. "It's the fact that I'm the only student who truly sees you."

Ji-won inhaled sharply. "That's a profoundly arrogant statement."

"Is it? You're a woman built of glass and ice, terrified that someone will push you off the perfect pedestal you’ve built." He leaned one hand on the desk, the gesture predatory. "You're waiting for someone to make a mistake, but I think you're waiting for someone to make you reckless."

Her heart hammered against her ribs, a wild, trapped bird. "You know nothing of my life."

"I know it's suffocating," he countered, his voice dropping lower, a shared secret. "I watched you today. Every time you glanced at the clock, you weren't checking the time; you were checking your fragile control. And the second our eyes met, that control shattered, didn't it?"

Ji-won felt a flush creep up her neck, a traitorous heat. "Leave my office, Do-yun-ssi. Now."

He smiled—a devastating, slow curve of his lips. "Only if you promise to punish me for my insolence." He stepped back, the challenge issued, and pulled his hoodie further over his head. "I'll see you for the next lecture, Professor Han."

He left, leaving her standing alone in the silent office. Ji-won pressed her palms to the desk, finding the wood warm where his hand had rested. Her career, her legacy, her entire, perfect life felt balanced on the fatal recklessness of a boy who saw straight into her soul.
