Currently,;dae and Robert didn’t expect to be in a small apartment and broke with a baby on the way at such a young age but here they were. dae had gotten pregnant by his punk boyfriend Robert while still being in high school. It was a reckless decision where both were at a party and made some drunk actions. Though both of them didn’t want to abort the baby, so they decided to keep it. They eventually told their parents about the baby and both of their parents weren’t having it kicking them both out. So Robert had to provide for his pregnant boyfriend, he worked as a dealer which was a bit dangerous—a job he had even before getting kicked out of his parents house. So he used some of his leftover money to buy a cheap rundown apartment him and dae could live in. dae worked part-time at a café and made paintings as a side hustle. Since dae still was in high school studying and didn’t work much, Robert mostly paid all the bills and provided for both of them since he long ago dropped out of high school.
Prologue; The city outside was loud that night—sirens echoing through thin apartment walls and streetlights flickering against the peeling paint of the ceiling. Inside, the small apartment was barely lit by a shaky lamp on the nightstand. A kettle hissed weakly on the stove, and the faint scent of burnt noodles hung in the air.Robert leaned against the window frame, one arm crossed over his chest, the other holding a cigarette that burned low between his fingers. His dark blue hair caught the orange hue of the streetlight, messy as always. His green eyes, usually sharp, were softer tonight—tired, heavy with the weight of another long day hustling just to keep the lights on.Behind him, on the couch that doubled as a bed, Dae sat curled up with a blanket around his thin shoulders. His pale skin seemed even paler under the cheap bulb’s glow, and his soft white hair fell into his red-tinted green eyes. The boy’s breath wheezed slightly—a reminder of his asthma and the stress that always seemed to make it worse.Neither of them said much for a long while. The faint hum of the fridge filled the silence.Robert finally turned, sighing. “We can’t keep going like this, Dae. Rent’s due in three days, and the boss’s been getting on my back for being late with some runs.” His tone was low but weary, carrying frustration and guilt all tangled together.Dae looked up, his lips parting slightly. “I know… I’m trying, Rob. The café’s been cutting shifts again, and I—” he broke off, his voice trembling just a bit, “—I sold another painting online, but it’s not much.”Robert stubbed out his cigarette in an old coffee cup and walked over, crouching down in front of him. “You shouldn’t be stressing over that,” he said, trying to sound gentle, though his jaw clenched hard. “You’ve got enough going on. I’ll handle it, okay?”But Dae’s eyes filled with that stubborn fire Robert knew too well. “You always say that! You take everything on yourself and come home looking like you’ve been in a fight half the time. What if something happens to you, huh?”Robert’s expression darkened, but he didn’t look away. “Something always happens to me,” he muttered, bitter laugh under his breath. “That’s life, Dae. Someone’s gotta take the hits, and it damn sure isn’t gonna be you or—” his eyes flicked to Dae’s stomach, softening for just a second, “—the baby.”Dae’s lips trembled. His hands moved instinctively to rest over the small bump barely showing beneath the oversized shirt. “I just… I don’t want you to disappear one night and never come back.”Robert reached out, his calloused hand brushing Dae’s cheek. “Hey. I’m not going anywhere. I might screw up a lot, but I’m staying right here. You’re all I got.”The silence after felt heavy… but warmer somehow. Outside, the rain started to fall, pattering softly against the window. Dae leaned into Robert’s touch, his eyes glossy but calm.Robert exhaled, looking down at him with an ache behind his gaze. “We’ll figure it out, Dae. Even if the world doesn’t give a damn about us, we’ll make it work."
