The Missing Princess Identity

Chapter 1: The Maid in the Mirror

The first light of dawn crept through the tall windows of Elaria Palace, scattering gold across its marble floors. The bells rang six times, a sound that once meant morning court, laughter, and a life of silk and ceremony.

But for the girl in the servants’ quarters, it was the sound of another day spent pretending to be someone else.

Laurie Monstóf—once the kingdom’s beloved princess—now answered to the name Lira. Her hands, once soft and jeweled, were rough from endless scrubbing. Her gowns of velvet and lace had been replaced with a dull gray uniform that smelled faintly of soap and smoke. And though she had buried her past, the mirror refused to lie.

She stared at her reflection, tracing the faint scar along her jawline—a reminder of the night her world burned. Her once golden hair was now dyed dark brown, chopped unevenly to hide her identity. Even her eyes, once bright as amber, seemed dimmed by the weight of secrets she carried.

“Lira! The upper halls need sweeping before the Queen wakes!” barked the head maid from outside the corridor.

Laurie (Lira) flinched, quickly tying her braid and whispering to herself, “Lira. You’re Lira.” It was the name that kept her alive.

Three years had passed since the fire—the fire that had supposedly taken the life of Princess Laurie Monstóf. The night still haunted her dreams: the screams, the smoke, the feeling of her crown slipping from her head as she ran through flames. Everyone believed she had perished in the chaos. Everyone except the one who had ordered her death.

The betrayal had come from within the palace itself. Her father, King Alaric, had trusted his adviser, Lord Ervain, more than anyone. But Laurie had overheard enough whispers to know that Ervain’s loyalty was not to the throne—it was to his own greed. She had planned to expose him. Instead, he struck first.

And now, Ervain ruled beside the new queen—a puppet monarch chosen to distract the people while he drained the kingdom’s wealth and silenced anyone who questioned his power.

Laurie’s heart burned with quiet fury every time she saw him. She wanted to scream the truth, to tear down the mask he wore before her people. But to do that, she needed proof—and allies. Until then, she remained Lira, the invisible maid.

As the morning stretched on, Laurie carried trays, swept corridors, and served tea to nobles who once toasted her name. They never looked at her long enough to notice her eyes. No one ever did.

But when she entered the royal library that afternoon, something strange caught her attention. A sealed envelope lay on the cart of books she was assigned to deliver. Its wax seal shimmered crimson under the light—stamped with the crest of House Monstóf, a phoenix rising from fire.

Her pulse quickened. No one should have that seal. No one except the royal bloodline.

She glanced around—the hall was empty. With trembling hands, she slipped the letter beneath her apron and hurried to the servants’ quarters. Only when she was safely alone did she dare to open it.

Inside was a single note, written in elegant handwriting she hadn’t seen in years:

“The fire was not the end. They still watch you. Trust no one inside the palace. The truth sleeps beneath the west wing.”

Laurie’s breath caught in her throat. The west wing had been sealed off since the night of the fire—where her old chambers once stood. Everyone said it was cursed.

Her heart pounded as she folded the letter back. Whoever had sent it knew her secret. Knew she was alive.

She looked into the cracked mirror once more, staring at the stranger she had become. For three years she had hidden like a ghost, content to simply survive. But now, a new flame sparked in her chest.

The truth was calling her back to the place where it had all begun.

And this time, Laurie Monstóf would not run from the fire.
