The room was dark, but Jane breathing came fast, shallow, and uneven.
Her hands clutched the blanket like it was the only thing keeping her grounded to the present. But she wasn’t in the present.
In her dream, the walls of her bedroom melted away—replaced by fluorescent hallway lights, the smell of cheap floor cleaner, and the echo of footsteps that weren’t hers.

She bent down to pick them up—hands shaking—when she saw a reflection in one of the locker doors.
It wasn’t her seventeen-year-old self anymore.
It was her now. Older. Tired. And still terrified.

But the laughter only grew louder. It filled the halls until it was all she could hear. The faces around her blurred into shadowed figures—mouths stretched wide in cruel, endless laughter.
She covered her ears, crouching, desperate to make it end.

A voice cut through the noise—real this time.
Her eyes snapped open. The hallway disappeared, replaced by the dim, soft light of her bedroom. Sweat clung to her skin, her hair damp against her forehead.

jane took a shaky breath, leaning into her. Her heartbeat was still too fast, her body still trembling, but haizel's warmth anchored her.

The past would always be part of her. But it no longer owned her.
