“The Cathedral of Seven Shadows"

"The Confessional of Shadows"

The cathedral waits. Its stones hum with centuries of whispered prayers, stolen confessions, broken hearts. I step forward, Sou Tachibana, bishop, shepherd, sinner, carrying the weight of the world in my bones.

The storm presses against the stained glass, each drop of rain like a tiny judgment. Candlelight trembles across the walls, reflecting angels who have seen everything and said nothing.

--------------------------------

I kneel at the altar. Pride coils around my shoulders first, gold and sharp, whispering: "You are better than them. You are chosen."

I taste the bitterness of truth.

"I have sinned, " I whisper.

"Forgive me."

Greed claws at me next, sharp as steel, whispering:

"Take more. Take all. "

"The world is yours."

I answer, steady:

" I have taken enough. Enough to know what it costs."

Lust presses close, intoxicating.

" You have desired what should not be yours. Hearts, bodies, trust… all yours to touch and destroy."

I confess:

" I have sinned. I have broken the laws I preach. "

Envy slips into my chest, green and sly.

" Look at them, the faithful, the forgiven… why not you? "

I close my eyes:

" Because my path is mine. I will endure. I will rise. "

Gluttony shuffles near, heavy, grasping at all

" I have ever taken. Consume. Take more.

I shake my head: No. My hunger lies elsewhere. Mercy. Faith. Hope."

Wrath roars, embers in its eyes.

" Strike. Punish. Burn. "

I bow my head:

" Mercy is stronger. I will choose it."

Sloth whispers last, dragging me into shadows.

" Rest. Delay. Hide.

I stand, unyielding. No. I will face every shadow. Every sin. Every failure. I will confess. "

---------------------------------

" I am the sinner and the priest. The shepherd and the condemned. The cathedral breathes around me. Past, present, future—all converge in this night. "

I speak to the God who listens:

" I, Sou Tachibana, have sinned in pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. And yet I rise. I pray. I forgive. I seek forgiveness. Even shadows cannot extinguish the light. Even sins cannot silence the soul that dares to believe. "

And the candle burns steady.

I walk through the pews. Each footstep echoes like a heartbeat. Time bends. I see ghosts of confessions long past: an old woman weeping over a child she abandoned, a soldier clutching the soul of a man he killed, a lover whose passion burned too bright.

The seven sins shift, now alive, moving among the visions. Pride whispers in the scholar’s ear; Greed drags at the merchant’s fingers; Lust coils around the lover’s neck; Envy twists the orphan’s heart; Gluttony feeds the noble’s appetite; Wrath breathes into the soldier’s wounds; Sloth lingers over the hermit’s inertia.

And I, Sou Tachibana, watch and feel it all, knowing each sin is mine as well.

I speak to them, to myself, to God.

Forgive me. Guide me. Strengthen me.

The cathedral breathes with my words. The candle flames rise higher, reflecting all that I am, all I have done, all I must face.

And I walk on, the seven shadows trailing, whispering, waiting.

Shadows Of The Sevens

The cathedral is no longer just stone and candlelight. It breathes. The walls hum with whispers, the pews creak as if recalling every confession ever made. I walk slowly down the aisle, my robes dragging over the marble floor, and I feel it the seven shadows stirring behind me.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pride emerges first, tall and cloaked in shimmering gold. Its voice is silk and steel.

“Sou Tachibana… you have guided thousands, yet you have always looked above them. Do you not feel your superiority? Your power? Your wisdom?”

I stop and meet it.

“I have sinned in pride. I have taken satisfaction where humility should have ruled. But I will not let it blind me anymore.”

Pride laughs softly, echoing off the vaulted ceiling. It does not retreat. It never retreats.

Greed follows, lean and sharp, its fingers twitching like claws.

“You have hoarded knowledge, influence, prayers, and love. Why not take more? The world is yours for the taking.”

I inhale slowly, feeling the weight of all I have accumulated.

“I have taken enough. I have hoarded enough. Now I give what I can—my guidance, my mercy, my faith. That is all I have to offer.”

Then Lust slithers around me, warm, intoxicating, almost tangible. Its voice drips temptation.

“Sou… you have desired what was forbidden. Hearts, trust, bodies… all within your reach. Why deny the pleasures that call to you?”

I shiver.

“I have sinned in lust, in thought, in longing. But I will not allow it to destroy my soul—or theirs. Desire alone does not justify action.”

Envy slinks forward, green-eyed, whispering to my very thoughts.

“Why not you? Why not me? Why do they live in peace while you stumble, falter, question?”

I close my eyes and bow my head.

“I will not measure myself against another. My path is mine, their path is theirs. I will walk it with honesty, even if imperfect.”

Gluttony shuffles next, heavy, grasping, its breath thick with indulgence.

“Sou, why deny yourself? Why hunger for restraint when pleasure is endless?”

I lift my gaze.

“Because my hunger is for faith, for mercy, for hope. Not for excess. Not for indulgence that leaves the soul empty.”

Wrath storms forward, embers in its eyes, hot and consuming.

“Strike, Sou! Punish! Burn! All who have wronged you, all who have failed! You are justified!”

I kneel, feeling the heat on my shoulders.

“I have felt wrath. I have sinned in anger. But I will not allow fire to consume what I must protect. Mercy is stronger than vengeance.”

Finally, Sloth drifts in like smoke, heavy, slow, seductive in its stillness.

“Rest, Sou. Delay. Hide. Let others carry the weight. Why face it all yourself?”

I rise, voice firm, steady.

“No. I will not hide. I will not delay. I will face every shadow, every sin, every failure. I will confess. I will endure.”

The cathedral exhales with me. Candle flames dance higher, reflecting in the stained glass. I feel the sins recede slightly, not defeated, but acknowledged. They are part of me, as I am part of them.

And I, Sou Tachibana, bishop, priest, sinner, shepherd, carry all of it. Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth. Seven shadows, seven truths, one soul.

I step to the altar, hands trembling, head bowed. “Forgive me… Father. I have sinned in thought, word, and deed. I have failed, I have faltered, yet I rise. I pray. I forgive, and I seek forgiveness. Even shadows cannot extinguish the light. Even sins cannot silence the soul that dares to believe.”

The cathedral breathes around me, alive. And for the first time tonight, I feel it: I am not alone.
