CHAPTER 1:SOUL OF A MAGE

...Chapter 1: Soul of a mage

...

You XiaoMo stood in front of a mirror, blinking at the stranger reflected in

it. After exhausting a great deal of brain cells, he was finally willing to

believe the fact that his soul was currently attached to a stranger's body.

The youth in the mirror looked about seventeen to eighteen years old.

Roughly his own age. He was wearing a long blue traditional Chinese robe

with a common blue-green hairpin on the top of his jet-black hair. The

combination gave him an otherworldly look. However, he seemed

somewhat pale, especially his lips. They were completely lacking color, as

if he had just received a heavy blow, the pretty pair of eyes was very red

and swollen like walnuts. You XiaoMo felt haggard all of a sudden, not

used to the sudden change in his appearance.

After being sentimental for a moment, You XiaoMo finally evaluated the

room he was in. It was extremely sparse. A wooden bed, a wooden table, a

wooden chair and a wooden counter on which the mirror was placed. Not a

trace of anything unnecessary. Although simple, it was filled with a rustic

feel, the simple style of ancient times.

Connecting this with the clothing on his body and his otherworldly look,

You XiaoMo made the sad discovery that he had been transported to ancient

times. But he was a modern man! He clearly remembered that the gas leak

next door caused an explosion, implicating him, the innocent neighbor,

exploding him into this stranger's body. Although this sounded outrageous,

it was indeed reality.

After an internal struggle, You XiaoMo decided to go with the flow.

After putting on his shoes, just when he was about to open the door and

leave to figure o ut the situation, the door was suddenly pushed open from

the outside, making him jump in shock. When they almost collided into

each other, the other party quickly dodged him and gasped in surprise.

You XiaoMo, you're finally willing to get out of bed?"

You XiaoMo was certain that only he himself knew his name, so this person

must be calling the original host of this body. Looked like heaven was still

treating him alright, giving him the body of someone with the same name.

You XiaoMo examined the incomer. He was a handsome youth, about his

own age, with a very sunny smile. But what did he mean by 'you're finally

willing to get out of bed', don't tell me he had a bad habit of being lazy?

Without waiting for him to ask, the young man started to speak.

"You XiaoMo, you should not lose heart. Even though your soul has a green

aura, at least you can still become a mid-level mage. You must know that

mid-level mages are still very rare. Some people remain low level mage s

their whole life. Therefore, you should not be broken-hearted. Tomorrow

morning, you have to go to the Mage's Hall. You have to pick yourself up."

You XiaoMo felt his head spinning and his brain swelling. What green

aura? What mid-level mage? Why did he not understand?

But overall he began to understand a little, maybe because this body had a

green aura soul, so it made the real owner of this body feel like he was

wearing a green hat? So he hid in his room broken-hearted and secretly

crying, finally dropping dead from excess grief? You XiaoMo covered his

face, such a way to die, how shameful!

"Then what about you?" You XiaoMo asked cautiously.

At the moment, he only knew this young man. He could only try to extract

information about this dimension from him. However, he was afraid that the

young man would discover that he was not the real You XiaoMo, therefore

he couldn't ask him straight out. Due to this, he didn't know that they had

not known each other for long. Furthermore, after finding out that his talent

was too inferior, he had locked himself inside, refusing to go out. That

being sa id, it was understandable that he was unaware of a lot of things.

The young man immediately grinned widely, unable to contain his joy, and

said bashfully while scratching his head, "My aura is blue. One look and it was clear that a blue aura was a good thing, but he still did

not understand a thing, ah !

"About that, I don't really understand. These few days my head has been

muddled, I’ve been forgetting a lot of things. Can you tell me more?"

You XiaoMo asked sheepishly, afraid to look at directly at him, afraid that

he would become suspicious. The young man seemed to be oblivious,

completely unsuspecting, revealing all that he knew, including the place

where they currently were. He said all there was to be said. After listening

to it all, You XiaoMo was rendered speechless. He was so utterly shocked

that he had no idea when the young man left the room.

This world was completely different from the one he knew. He had entered

the biggest sect on the Long Xiang Continent, the Tian Xin Sect. To be

precise, he was just a probationary disciple. Furthermore, the Tian Xin Sect

was divided into two divisions.

The Warrior Division was made up of practitioners. Their souls did not have

colored auras, but they could practice various energy control and martial

arts techniques. The other was the Mage Division. All mages had colored

auras. The colors were separated into various levels from level one to level

nine, then from light to dark: pink, yellow, green, teal, blue and purple.

Those who had pink and yellow auras could only become low level mages.

Light green and green auras could become mid-level mages. Blue and

purple auras could become high level mages. However, the potential for the

latter was much greater than the former. For example, with a purple aura

one's potential was much higher than someone with a blue aura. Therefore,

there was hope of becoming a top level mage.

A blue aura meant a future high level mage. No wonder the young man had

such an elated expression. As for the host of this body, he was a

probationary disciple of the Mage Division. He was brought back here three

days ago by the elders of the Tian Xin Sect, along with some others . The

original host was a little arrogant, but during the evaluation, he found out

that his aptitude was unexpectedly the worst among everyone. Unable to

accept it, he hid himself in his room, crying. This kid, such appalling mental fortitude!

On top of that, he learned a very important piece of information. Since he

was a probationary disciple, he had to pass the assessment half a year later

or else he would be driven out of the Tian Xin Sect.

The Tian Xin Sect was the largest sect on Long Xiang Continent, with very

stringent requirements for their disciples, especially for mages. If they were

unable to produce the required product half a year later, they would be

swept out the door. A s a stranger in this strange land, and with a brain that

still hadn’t connected to the logic of this world, to You XiaoMo, this news

was undoubtedly like thunder in a clear sky.

(t/n: wearing a green hat \= being cheated on: *This saying came from a story

about a merchant who had a very beautiful wife. Due to his job, he was

never around the house much. Out of loneliness, the wife began cheating on

him with a fabric shop owner whenever the husband left home. But one day,

the fabric shop owner got impatient, because the husband hadn’t left the

house for more than 3 months. Some days later, the fabric shop owner saw

the husband pass by his store, so he thought the husband had left the house

for business again, thus he sneaked into the house to meet the wife, but

before he did anything, the husband came back. However, the fabric shop

owner managed to hide under the bed and avoid the calamity. After that

experience, the wife asked the shop owner to make a piece of green fabric

and make a green hat for the husband. She gave it to the husband and said

this hat represented her heart, it would protect his hair from all the dirt and

hope he would always remember her through this hat. The husband

gratefully received the hat and wore it every time he left for business, but

little did he know, the hat was to signal the fabric shop owner that the

husband had left for business and he could come over.*)

CHAPTER 2 : TRADING DIVISION

...Chapter 2: Trading Division...

...----------------...

After leaving the room, You XiaoMo finally found out the name of the

young man with the blue aura. He was called Jiang Liu. He actually lived

next door. In the beginning, he was unremarkable, but ever since the

assessment, he had thrived because of his blue aura. A blue aura proved that

he had the potential to be a high level mage.

Furthermore, high level mages were hard to come by on Long Xiang

Continent. Many mages could only pace back and forth at the low and midlevels. But if one was able to become a high level mage, the future was

limitless. The more one was able to refine high level magic pills, the more

respect one would get from people. Therefore, high level mages had always

been the target of big-name sects.

Three days ago, those who were brought into the the Tian Xin Sect with

You XiaoMo were all accepted as probationary disciples. But after Jiang

Liu was shown to have a blue aura during the assessment, he was promoted

to an official disciple. Since Jiang Liu was now an official disciple, he

would not have to face the entrance exam half a year later. Furthermore,

during yesterday's assessment, someone from the Grand Elder's lineage

took a fancy to Jiang Liu. Today he was invited to move to the inner

courtyard. Therefore, he had come to bid them farewell. Aside from You

XiaoMo, the others were all envious of Jiang Liu.

"How nice, when will I be able to become an official disciple like Jiang

Liu?"

"Work hard, then maybe we can fulfill this dream half a year later."

"If only it was that easy."

You XiaoMo finally couldn't stop himself from blurting out, "Is it really that hard"?He didn’t want to be driven out of the the Tian Xin Sect. In this strange

dimension, staying within the Tian Xin Sect was probably the safest bet.

The person who was speaking gave him a look, and just when You XiaoMo

started to feel flustered, he indifferently looked away, saying with a long

face, "The Tian Xin Sect has very stringent demands of their mage

disciples. From what I know, if you wish to enter the inner courtyard, you

must refine a level three magic pill. Furthermore, it must be within the next

six months."

At once, sharp intakes of breath could be heard, accompanied by

disbelieving faces with mouths hanging open. Low level mages were also

able to refine level three magic pills, but that required at least two to three

years of perseverance, and even then success was not guaranteed. There

was no guarantee that any mage, even a low level mage, would be able to

refine a complete level three magic pill. A level two magic pill seemed

more probable.

Hearing his words, everyone became disheartened.

Although You XiaoMo didn't know what it took to become a mage, looking

at everyone's expressions, it seemed to be a difficult path. Like this, he

started to feel that his future was becoming darker and darker.

"But, it was not as if we have absolutely no hope." Looking at everyone's

depressed expressions, that person suddenly perked up.

"What hope? Spit it out." Everyone was hanging in suspense.

That person spoke secretively, "The Tian Xin Sect is a very large sect. The

disciples number in the thousands and tens of thousands. Putting aside the

Warrior Division, looking just at the Mage Division, the yearly expenses are

huge. You all know that although mages can earn money, in the early stages,

the burn rate is high. Therefore, the Tian Xin Sect also has a trading

division, specialized in making money for the Tian Xin Sect."

Hearing this, even You XiaoMo perked up his ears.

"If you are able to attract the attention of the elders from the trading

division when the time comes, even if you fail to attract the attention of the

inner circles, you still will not be forced to leave the Tian Xin Sect. It's just

that from then on, your destiny with alchemy comes to an end."

After his words, everyone seemed lost in thought. After hearing this, You

XiaoMo understood that the trading division wa s a busin ess, but this

meant one must be business-minded. Furthermore, from what he said, it

seemed that was not all there was to it. What twists and turns lie ahead, You

XiaoMo didn't know, but he didn't intend to give up. After parting from the

rest, You XiaoMo decided to head to the library to take a look .The library was an all encompassing place for both the Mage and Warrior

Divisions. Therefore, it was huge. The library was divided into two

sections, the East and West Pavilions . The materials in the East Pavilion

were all sorts of literature on refining magic pills and herbal medicine,

including the precious personal writings of the previous generations. The

West Pavilion displayed materials concerning the history and geography of

the Long Xiang Continent. It also had materials on the techniques of energy

control and martial arts.

But not just anyone was allowed to go in and look through the material s.

Someone like You XiaoMo, a probationary disciple, was only allowed to

enter the first floor of the East and West Pavilions. He lacked the

qualifications to ascend to the upper floors, unless he specifically applied

for the privilege or became an official disciple. But for You XiaoMo, those

two options were unattainable; besides , for now, he had no need to visit the

upper levels.

Visiting the library, You XiaoMo had two aims. The first aim was to

understand the history of the Long Xiang Continent. He had to know what

kind of world this was. The second aim was the entrance exam half a year

later. He felt he had no hope whatsoever for both the Trading and Warrior

Division. But he still held a little hope for the Mage Division. However, he

had no idea what it meant to be a mage, so he had to try to figure it out.

After almost getting lost, You XiaoMo managed to ask his way to the

library. Still it took him almost an hour to find it. From far away, he saw an

imposing magnificent palace. A gilded rectangular plaque was placed above

the palace. On it was written three characters for ‘Library’. These were

seemingly simple and unadorned characters but they were simultaneously

abundant with meaning, giving rise to an imposing aura. You XiaoMoswallowed nervously; the library was too imposing, even more majestic

than the Forbidden City.

Entering the area, the first thing You XiaoMo saw was an elderly silverhaired man, eyes closed, sitting in between the East and West Pavilions. Just

when he approached, the old man suddenly opened his eyes. The bright and

piercing eyes were incompatible with his outward aged appearance. A sharp

pair of eyes like knives, wizened with accumulated experience, shot straight

at You XiaoMo, scaring him to the extent that he was afraid to go any

closer. The old man gave him a look before saying freezingly, "Hand over

your identity tablet."

You XiaoMo froze, but soon realized that there was indeed a tablet on him.

He hurriedly fished it out and handed it over gingerly. After taking the

tablet, the old man seemingly did nothing. You XiaoMo only saw him pick

it up before returning it two seconds later. He then stated, "You XiaoMo,

probationary disciple, access limited to the first floor of the East Pavilion."

Something flew towards him and You XiaoMo dodged reflexively but not

in time.A sound rings out as it hits his head, before falling to the ground.

Raising his head, he catches sight of a slight twitch on the serious

expression of the old man.

"Using that, you can enter the library." After saying that, the old man

proceeded to ignore him.

You XiaoMo shamefacedly picked up the object from the floor, not daring

to look at the old man, and ran towards the West Pavilion, probably not to

emerge in the near future.
