THE MASK

CHAPTER 1 — THE MASK

The night was unnaturally quiet, as if the city itself was holding its breath. Broken streetlights flickered above an abandoned factory, casting long, nervous shadows across the rusted gates. Arin had no idea why he felt pulled here—only that something inside the darkness was calling his name.

He pushed open the metal door.

A slow, echoing creak rolled through the empty hall like a warning.

Inside, dust floated in the air like frozen snow. Pipes hissed softly, leaking cold breath into the shadows. Arin’s flashlight shook slightly in his hand as he walked deeper, the beam cutting through the silence.

Then he saw it.

A mask lying in the center of the room.

Pure white.

Smooth.

Empty-eyed.

But the strangest part—

It looked completely new, untouched by time.

Arin stepped closer, unable to resist. Something about the mask felt alive.

As he bent down, a faint whisper crawled across the floor.

“Arin…”

His heart slammed against his ribs.

He spun around—no one.

The whisper came again, soft but clear.

“Pick me up.”

His body moved before his mind did. He reached out and touched the mask.

A loud click.

A spark.

A breath that wasn’t his.

The mask awakened.

A hollow voice echoed from inside, neither male nor female.

“You found me.”

Arin staggered backward.

“Who—what are you?”

The voice replied with a calm, chilling tone.

“I am the Gatekeeper of the Hidden Universe. And now… you belong to me.”

Suddenly, a bright light blasted down from above.

Arin shielded his eyes.

On the balcony, dark silhouettes appeared—men in black tactical suits, guns drawn, moving with silent precision.

One of them shouted,

“Don’t move! Step away from the artifact!”

Artifact?

They were talking about the mask.

Arin’s instincts screamed run, but his feet refused. The mask felt glued to his hand, pulsing like a heartbeat.

The voice inside whispered again.

“They will take me.

If they do, your world dies.”

Arin didn’t understand, but fear made him act.

He lifted the mask toward his face.

An agent yelled, “Stop! Don’t wear it!”

But it was too late.

The mask sealed itself against his skin with a violent snap.

Darkness swallowed him.

The world folded, twisted, broke.

He felt weightless, then crushed.

Blind, then blinded by too much.

Voices screamed, machines broke, walls cracked—but none of it was real. Or maybe all of it was.

Then came the final whisper:

“Welcome, Arin.

Welcome to the space between worlds.”

A thunderous shockwave exploded outward, shattering the factory.

Agents were thrown across the floor. Beams fell. Metal screamed.

In the center of the chaos, Arin stood perfectly still.

The mask’s eyes lit with a cold, unnatural glow.

Arin whispered, trembling,

“What… have I become?”

The mask answered:

“The chosen one.

The last key.

The danger they feared.”

And somewhere in the distant dark, something ancient… awakend

Chapter 2 – The First Hunt

Arin sprinted through the dark forest, lungs burning, mind spinning. Behind him, the distant glow of his burning farmhouse flickered like a nightmare that refused to fade. Every branch he brushed felt sharper, every step heavier. And through it all, the mask on his face whispered.

“Host… danger approaching… follow my guidance.”

Arin didn’t understand it, but he obeyed. He leaped over a root just as a blade whistled past his neck.

A tall man emerged from the shadows, wearing a cracked porcelain mask. His voice was cold enough to freeze Arin’s breath.

“Return the artifact.”

Arin backed away. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

“You touched it,” the hunter hissed. “Now it belongs to you.”

The mask pulsed, and a strange warmth shot through Arin’s right arm.

“Energy surge activated.”

Arin gasped as blue light flickered under his skin.

The hunter’s eyes widened. “It awakened already? Impossible.”

Before he could attack, a sharp whistle cut through the night—

THWIP!

An arrow planted itself beside the hunter’s ear.

A girl dropped from a tree branch like a shadow come alive. She landed between Arin and the hunter, bow drawn, eyes burning with confidence.

“Back off, mask-boy.”

The hunter vanished into the darkness.

Arin stared at the girl. She was around his age, with short hair, forest gear, and a smirk that looked like she was used to saving people who didn’t ask for help.

“My name’s Lira,” she said. “And you’re in trouble.”

Before Arin could respond, another figure stepped out—a huge man carrying a hammer the size of a small tree.

“Lira,” he said calmly, “more Hunters approaching.”

Arin stepped back. “Who are you people? Why are you helping me?”

Lira walked toward him but paused when the mask on his face shifted and whispered again.

“Allies detected.”

She raised an eyebrow. “It spoke to you?”

Arin nodded, trembling. “Yes.”

Lira and the giant exchanged a look—worried, surprised, scared.

“This just got worse,” she muttered.

The giant placed a massive hand on Arin’s shoulder. “I am Bram. Lira talks too much. I do not. But we will protect you.”

But the forest suddenly shivered.

Leaves rustled.

Branches snapped.

Footsteps—many of them—closed in.

Shadows moved between the trees. More masked hunters. Dozens.

Lira drew a glowing red arrow. “They found us.”

Bram lifted his hammer. “We cannot outrun them.”

Arin’s heartbeat synced with the mask’s pulses. He felt something new—a force rising inside him, wild yet controlled.

“Can I fight?” Arin whispered.

The mask answered, voice deep and echoing.

“You can. And you must.”

Lira stepped in front of him. “Arin, listen to me. If the mask truly awakened, then you’re the key to something bigger than all of us.”

Bram nodded. “And the Hunters know it.”

The circle of masked enemies closed tighter.

Arin clenched his fists as blue energy coursed through him.

“I’m not running anymore.”

And with that, the first battle of his new life began.

Chapter 3 – The Run Beyond the Trees

Arin tightened his fists as the circle of masked hunters closed around them. The mask on his face pulsed with a cold rhythm, syncing with his heartbeat.

Lira hissed, “Arin, whatever the mask is doing—let it!”

Bram slammed his hammer into the ground, creating a shockwave that pushed back the first wave of hunters. But dozens more stepped through the trees.

“We can’t win here!” Lira shouted. “Fall back!”

They retreated, slashing through shadows, arrows glowing red, and Arin’s new power blasting through roots and soil. But the hunters didn’t stop—they followed like ghosts.

Finally, the forest line broke.

A wide valley opened below them, stretching out toward an old, rusted bridge hanging over a dry riverbed. Fog rolled beneath it like a breathing beast.

Lira pointed. “There! Cross the bridge. They won’t follow.”

Arin panted, “Why?”

“Because that isn’t their territory.”

Before he could question further, a hunter lunged from behind. Instinct kicked in—Arin’s hand glowed blue, and a burst of force exploded outward, sending the attacker crashing through a tree.

Lira stared for a second. “Okay… you’re stronger than you look.”

They sprinted toward the bridge. But as soon as Arin stepped on it, the wood beneath him thrummed like a heartbeat. He felt the mask heat up.

“Signal detected… entering boundary of the Outer Zone.”

Arin froze.

“Outer Zone? What is that?”

Lira grabbed his arm, pulling him forward. “A place your mask shouldn’t be reacting to. Move!”

Behind them, the hunters reached the edge of the bridge—but stopped. They stood still, stiff, like statues frozen mid-step.

Arin whispered, “Why aren’t they crossing?”

Bram’s voice dropped low. “Because something worse lives on this side.”

The wind suddenly grew colder.

Fog around the bridge thickened, swirling like fingers. A distant metallic howl echoed from somewhere deep inside the valley—inhuman, broken, hungry.

Arin swallowed hard. “What is that?”

Lira’s face tightened. “A Reaver. And if it heard us… we need to move. NOW.”

They ran across the bridge as fast as they could. The moment they reached the other side, the fog behind them twisted—and the hunters vanished, sucked backward as if pulled by invisible hands.

Arin gasped. “They disappeared—again!”

Lira shook her head. “No. They were dragged back to their zone. Something is controlling them. Something connected to your mask.”

Arin touched the mask gently. “Why me? Why did it choose me?”

Bram turned to him. “Because your mask isn’t just a mask, Arin. It’s a relic. A living relic from before our world broke.”

Arin blinked. “Before our world broke? What does that mean?”

Lira exhaled deeply.

“You really don’t know anything, do you? Fine. When we reach Haven outpost, you’ll get your answers. But until then—keep your head down.”

Arin nodded.

But the mask whispered again, colder this time.

“Warning: Reaver approaching.”

The fog behind them roared.

Lira’s eyes widened.

“Oh no… it heard us.”
