Clea Harper/ MC
Good morning, students, faculty, and distinguished guests.
On behalf of the University Court and the Board of Governors, we welcome you to a new semester at the University of St Andrews.
This institution has stood for more than six centuries—not just as Scotland’s oldest university, but as a home for bold thinkers, stubborn dreamers, and minds that refuse to settle for mediocrity. Every generation that walks through these halls leaves behind a legacy. This year, that responsibility passes to you.
We expect excellence, yes—but more importantly, we expect integrity, curiosity, and the courage to question everything. Our classrooms will challenge you, our traditions will ground you, and our community will shape you in ways you cannot yet imagine.
To our returning students: welcome back. You carry the pride of St Andrews forward.
To our new students: you are now part of a story older than any of us. Your journey begins here, and it begins today.
We encourage you to push boundaries, collaborate, debate fiercely, fail bravely, and rise again. The world is changing—fast—and it will look to leaders who are educated not just in books, but in compassion and conviction.
We look forward to watching you grow, stumble, succeed, and become the people you are meant to be.
With that, we officially declare the new semester open. May this year be your most transformative yet.
Thank you.
