OOPS! I Read Your Mind
Ch.1: He Must Have Misheard
Chapter 1: He Must Have Misheard
The Number One Campus Cafeteria buzzed with activity. Jungkook finished his lunch and was about to clear his tray and head back to his dorm.
There were simply too many people. The weather this year had been unusually hot—it was only mid-May, yet everyone was already sweating profusely.
The first cafeteria was popular among students for its affordable prices and decent food. The only downside was the huge crowds; entering and exiting meant jostling through throngs of people, inevitably bumping arms.
Jungkook had switched to half sleeves today and tried his best to avoid contact, but he still ended up brushing against people. A chaotic jumble of voices flooded his mind
A/N: [...] means he is hearing what people are saying in their mind
Students
Student 1:
[Holy crap, isn't that my crush?]
Students
Student 3:
[Ugh, my OTP just broke up again today!]
Students
Student 7:
[Who added me on WeChat last night and then didn't say a word? So annoying.]
Students
Student 13:
[Which jerk didn't change their clothes? Their sweat stink is about to make me pass out.]
Students
Student 37:
[Braised pork—I've gotta get some today!]
Jungkook quickly squeezed his way out of the crowd; the voices were giving him a headache.
A month ago, on a rainy night, he'd taken a shortcut back to his dorm, slipped, and hit his head against a tree. After feeling dazed for a while, he woke up the next day to find he had gained the ability to read minds.
At first, he thought he was hallucinating and even consulted a psychologist, but the problem persisted. The mind-reading ability remained. He tested it several times with his best friend and confirmed that what he heard matched his friend's inner thoughts.
Fortunately, the mind-reading didn't really affect his health or daily life—as long as he avoided skin contact with others, it was manageable.
But with summer here, it was impossible to avoid brushing against people in crowded places, making it nearly impossible to prevent.
A/N: *...* this means he is thinking in his mind
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
*Maybe I should just wear long sleeves tomorrow,*
Once he distanced himself from the crowd, the unwanted mental noise vanished, and the air suddenly felt much fresher.
Just then, his phone rang.
His good friend Lee Jong-Suk was calling, clearly in a hurry.
Lee Jong Suk
As soon as Jungkook answered, Jong-Suk blurted out,
📲"Kook, do me a favor, please!"
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
📲"What is it?"
Lee Jong Suk
📲 "Buy two cups of bubble tea and deliver them to the girls' dorm for me? I'm out eating with a friend and can't get away."
Jungkook knew what he was up to. His friend was trying to pursue a girl from the foreign languages department and had been using all sorts of tactics lately, though it didn't seem to be making much progress.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
Jungkook glanced up at the blistering sun.
📲"Bringing bubble tea to Lee Jieun again? Can't you do it yourself? Do you have any idea how hot it is outside? It's 35 degrees Celsius today. It takes me ten minutes just to bike from the bubble tea shop to the girls' dorm."
Lee Jong Suk
Jong-Suk pleaded in a whiny voice on the other end.
📲"Please? I already promised her. This is the first time she's asked me for something—she must like me. I'll cover your breakfast for the whole month, deal? Deal?"
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
Jungkook shuddered.
📲"Alright, but stop being so creepy."
Lee Jong Suk
📲 "You got it, babe! Remember, one with 30% sugar, the other is for her friend—50% sugar."
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
Jungkook rolled his eyes at the clear blue sky.
📲 "Do you know what you sound like right now?"
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
📲"Such a simp."
Lee Jong Suk
📲"You've got such a sharp tongue."
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
📲"Good, you're aware."
The bubble tea shop was right next to the cafeteria and quite busy. Summer always drew crowds to cold drink shops. He ordered three cups—two for the girls' dorm and one for himself.
Twenty minutes later, he was waiting outside the girls' dorm with the bubble tea.
Passing girls glanced at him curiously, but no one came up to ask for his contact info. They probably assumed he was there to deliver drinks to his girlfriend.
Soon, a girl wearing pink slide sandals with bows came running toward him with a smile.
Lee Jieun was nearly 170cm tall, with long black hair, light makeup, and a pretty face. Her eyes shimmered—no wonder Jong-Suk was pursuing her like a goddess.
Lee Jieun
Jieun spoke softly and gently
"Jeon Jungkook?"
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"Jong-Suk asked me to bring you this bubble tea."
Lee Jieun
Jieun took the drinks with a smile.
"Thanks."
With his task complete, Jungkook turned to leave.
Lee Jieun
Just as he was about to get back on his bike, Jieun hesitated and called out,
"Wait, Jungkook … Are you in the same dorm as Kim Taehyung?"
Jungkook paused. Though it wasn't his first time meeting Jieun, he had never mentioned which dorm he lived in.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
*How did she know he shared a room with Kim Taehyung?*
Lee Jieun
Jieun explained a bit awkwardly,
"Don't mind me asking—Jong-Suk told me you and Taehyung are roommates. Could you send me his WeChat?"
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"…"
*So her interest wasn't in the bubble tea after all.*
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"I'll have to ask him first."
Lee Jieun
Jieun couldn't hide her delight.
"Then I'll add you on WeChat. Thank you so much!"
Jungkook didn't ask her reasons. From her expression, it was clear she wasn't interested in his friend.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
*Unrequited crush—how awkward.*
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"You're welcome, but I can't guarantee he'll add you."
Jungkook couldn't really refuse Jieun since they were acquainted, but he couldn't tell his friend about this either. He'd have to explain everything to Taehyung and make sure he stays out of it. After all, someone like Taehyung could date anyone he wanted.
Jungkook lived in a four-person room, but his roommates were all from different majors. With different schedules, they didn't know each other well.
Taehyung was especially mysterious—usually quiet and barely talked to him.
Jungkook rarely ran into Taehyung in the dorm during the day and never really asked about his routine.
When he returned to the dorm, one of his roommates was already there, wearing headphones and playing games. Jungkook didn't disturb him. He sipped his jasmine-flavored iced bubble tea, feeling the summer heat and frustration melt away. Soon, the cup was nearly empty, but a few bubble tea pearls remained stuck at the bottom.
Ch.2: He must have misheard (pt.2)
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
*Dammit, they just wouldn't come up.*
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
*Whatever.*
He stood up and tossed the bubble tea cup into the trash bin behind the door. Just as he was about to turn around, the dorm room door was pushed open, and a tall, slender figure nearly loomed over him. At that moment, looking up, Jungkook felt the intimidation of the other's height.
It was Kim Taehyung returning.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
Remembering his buddy's predicament, Jungkook spoke first,
"You're back."
Kim Taehyung ( ml )
Taehyung raised his eyebrows slightly, seeming a bit surprised.
"Yeah, didn't notice you were there."
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
Jungkook shook his head.
"It’s fine, you didn’t bump into me."
Taehyung nodded, moved past Jungkook toward his own chair, and opened the laptop on his desk.
Jungkook stood still, debating whether to bring up to Taehyung that Jieun, the girl his friend was pursuing, wanted to add him on WeChat.
But he and Taehyung barely knew each other, and bringing this up would be strange.
Jungkook lingered as he sat back down at his own desk. A book lay open in front of him, but he wasn’t really reading it. Out of the corner of his eye, he glanced at Taehyung's profile.
Taehyung was good-looking, with well-defined, handsome features, though he always wore a world-weary expression.
His and Taehyung's beds were parallel, so he could see him just by turning his head.
How was he supposed to bring this up to a roommate he wasn’t familiar with? And he couldn’t even discuss it with his close friend.
After stalling for a bit, Taehyung had already returned to his bed for a nap.
Jungkook had missed his chance and could only go back to his own bed to lie down. It wasn't really his problem anyway—he might as well take a nap first.
Sleeping while hugging a pillow was more comfortable.
An hour later, Jungkook woke from his nap and suddenly remembered his small task. He glanced at the neighboring bed—Taehyung was already gone.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
*When did he leave?*
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
Whatever, time to head to class.
Jungkook quickly got out of bed and looked up to see Taehyung walking in from the balcony.
Taehyung casually pulled the curtain aside, and sunlight flooded the dim room, illuminating his handsome face, which had been hidden in the shadows.
Jungkook met Taehyung's gaze, but the other’s expression was too cold, his eyes deep and intense, making Jungkook lose his nerve. As Taehyung looked at him, Jungkook nervously scratched his arm, which wasn’t itchy at all, and edged past Taehyung to enter the bathroom.
When he came out again, Taehyung was putting a few books into his backpack and about to leave the dorm.
Jungkook grew anxious. It was Friday, and Taehyung usually left campus for the weekend, not returning until Monday morning.
He grabbed his own backpack and hurried after Taehyung.
Taehyung, with his long legs and stride, had already reached the staircase in the few seconds it took Jungkook to step out.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"Taehyung, wait up."
Jungkook jogged a few steps to catch up with Taehyung, who was heading downstairs.
Kim Taehyung ( ml )
Taehyung turned his head and looked up.
"What is it?"
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"Um, if a girl named Lee Jieun wants to add you on WeChat, would you mind not adding her?"
Kim Taehyung ( ml )
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"Well, she might have a crush on you, but I..."
Taehyung glanced at Jungkook expressionlessly, didn't respond, as if unwilling to engage with the topic. He continued down the stairs without stopping, leaving Jungkook no choice but to follow.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
Jungkook lifted his chin and asked,
"I know my request might be a bit unreasonable, but can you not pursue her?"
He was really sticking his neck out for his buddy—Jong-Suk had better make it up to him big time in the future!
Taehyung glanced down, sweeping over Jungkook briefly before shifting back to the stairs ahead. He walked quickly, and Jungkook had to scramble to keep up, watching for any reaction as they descended.
Suddenly, not paying attention, Jungkook missed a step and stumbled forward uncontrollably. In a panic, he grabbed for the nearest support—a person and the stair railing.
A large hand firmly steadied his arm, and a deep voice rang in his ear.
Jungkook was about to say thank you, but before he could speak, a strange, unfamiliar voice popped into his head.
???
[I really want to tie Jungkook to the bed and not let him like anyone else.]
Jungkook froze for a second, thinking he'd misheard.
By then, Taehyung had already released his arm. After confirming Jungkook was fine, he strode quickly down the stairs.
Jungkook, however, stood frozen in place for what felt like ages.
Did he just hear Taehyung's thoughts?
There were other students on the stairs, but no one else had laid a hand on him—only Taehyung had made contact with his skin.
It had to be his imagination.
Ch.3: Me??
Though he told himself Taehyung's inner thought meant nothing, Jungkook couldn't focus in class all afternoon, his mind wandering repeatedly.
Why on earth would Taehyung think that?
Tying someone to a bed, forbidding them to like others—how bizarre is that? Would a normal person even conceive such a thought?
Jungkook spent the entire afternoon trying to compose himself, repeatedly telling himself he must have misheard!
Lee Jong Suk
"Kook, why are you spacing out? Class is over, aren't you leaving?"
Jong-Suk patted Jungkook's shoulder.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"Nothing, I'm leaving now."
At this hour, the elevators were packed, so they opted for the stairs.
The two chatted as they walked.
Lee Jong Suk
"What are your plans for the weekend? Working part-time or staying on campus?"
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"Not working part-time this week."
Lee Jong Suk
"How about coming out with me? I'm showing my friend around some attractions."
Jong-Suk's high school classmate was visiting for a couple of days, so he was playing tour guide all weekend.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"It's too hot, I don't want to go"
Jungkook said, watching his footing.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
"You guys have fun."
Normally, he wouldn't mind going out, but ever since he gained the ability to read minds, every outing risked encountering people—especially at crowded weekend tourist spots. He didn't want his mind flooded with all sorts of strange thoughts from others; it would drive him insane.
Lee Jong Suk
"I'll bring you back some good food."
Just as Jungkook was about to say something, he noticed a guy squeezing his way upstairs against the flow of the descending crowd. He wore a hoodie, his gaunt face revealing a stubbled chin, his eyes downcast.
Ordinarily, Jungkook wouldn't pay attention to students going the opposite direction, but as they passed, the guy accidentally brushed against his arm.
???
[I’m going to stab that cheating bitch to death. One stab isn’t enough—I’ll stab her three times, ten times, fifty times. I want her to bleed out and die!]
This gruesome thought flooded Jungkook's mind, startling him so much his heart nearly stopped.
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
*Was this what the guy was thinking right now? How terrifying!*
Jungkook quickly turned to look at the ascending guy and noticed the distinct shape of a knife handle bulging under his oversized hoodie sleeve.
Over the past month, he had unintentionally overheard many classmates' thoughts. Even if some harbored dark ideas, none had reached the point of wanting to kill someone.
Lee Jong Suk
Jong-Suk noticed Jungkook suddenly stop moving
"What’s wrong? If you stand still like this, someone might bump into you."
Jeon Jungkook(MC)
Jungkook turned to look back upstairs
"You go back to the dorm first. I left my phone in the classroom—I need to go get it."
He was deeply uneasy. If this guy truly intended to kill someone, he could at least alert the police. Not knowing was one thing, but knowing was another. He couldn’t just ignore it or pretend he hadn’t heard. If nothing happened, fine—but if something did, it would cost a life.
Jong-Suk believed him and was about to say something when he saw Jungkook already heading in the opposite direction.
Lee Jong Suk
"Running so fast?"
Jungkook was indeed moving quickly, but he was going against the flow of the crowd. Not everyone consciously kept to the right, and some people blocked the way. He almost lost track of the guy.
The guy seemed tireless, climbing upward without pause.
Jungkook had already descended three floors earlier, and now, chasing the guy upstairs, he had climbed at least five floors.
Along the way, he occasionally overheard other students' thoughts, his mind buzzing with chaos.
The guy turned onto the eleventh floor.
Jungkook breathed a sigh of relief and stopped on the eleventh floor.
But as he stood there, he saw classrooms on both sides and had no idea whether the guy had gone left or right.
He started searching from the right side, hoping desperately that nothing would happen.
The classrooms were separated from the hallway by glass, making it easy to see inside.
As he checked room by room, he didn’t notice that someone in one of the classrooms had spotted him.
Taehyung put down his pen, his gaze fixed on the figure moving outside the window.
Jung Hoseok
His friend Jung Hoseok asked,
"What are you looking at?"
Kim Taehyung ( ml )
Taehyung shook his head
"Nothing."
Jung Hoseok
Hoseok nudged his arm
"What’s the plan for tonight?"
Jung Hoseok
Taehyung glanced at his hand, and Hoseok raised his hands apologetically,
"Sorry, I’ll be more careful next time."
Then, Taehyung spotted Jungkook walking back from the other end out of the corner of his eye. His gaze didn’t waver as he stood up and headed outside.
Jung Hoseok
"Hey, where are you going?"
Unable to contain his curiosity, he eagerly got up and followed.
