Elina Fernandes always thought her life was ordinary. At twenty-four, she lived with her family in a quiet suburban house, surrounded by the predictable rhythm of daily life. Her mother, Margaret, was caring and perceptive, often noticing things others missed. Her father, Daniel, practical and protective, rarely indulged in what he called “overactive imaginations.” And her younger sister, Sophia, was a whirlwind of energy, laughter, and the occasional mischievous observation that sometimes made Elina wonder if the little girl could see things adults couldn’t.
But that night, ordinary ceased to exist.
The power had flickered, casting long shadows across the living room walls. Elina had been sitting by the window, notebook in hand, trying to sketch a new design for work, when she heard it. A whisper.
Soft, almost imperceptible, it came from somewhere behind her.
“Elina…”
She froze, heart hammering in her chest. Her eyes darted around the darkened room. The curtains swayed slightly, though no breeze had entered through the closed window. Her mother was asleep upstairs; her father, deep in his study; and Sophia, in her room, fast asleep. There was no one else in the house.
“Elina…”
Again. Closer this time.
A chill ran down her spine. She whispered back, almost afraid of her own voice.
“Who’s there?”
Silence.
She pressed herself against the couch, every muscle tense, listening. But nothing moved. The house was silent, except for the hum of the refrigerator and the faint sound of the clock ticking on the wall. Yet something didn’t feel right. Something… unseen.
Her phone buzzed on the coffee table. She grabbed it, hoping for a rational distraction. A message. Unknown number.
“Don’t ignore the whispers.”
Elina’s fingers trembled as she reread it. She wanted to dismiss it — a prank, maybe, or a wrong number — but her gut twisted with unease. She felt eyes on her, though she was alone.
Suddenly, the shadows along the walls seemed to stretch and shift. One corner of the room darkened more than the rest, as if the darkness itself had taken shape. Her breath quickened.
And then she heard footsteps.
Soft, deliberate. Approaching from the hallway.
Elina’s instincts screamed at her to run upstairs, lock the door, and never look back. But curiosity — a dangerous, irresistible curiosity — anchored her to the spot.
A shadow appeared at the edge of her vision, tall, calm, and impossibly still. And then he stepped into the dim light.
Adrian Cole.
His eyes met hers, sharp and unreadable, but something in them made her heart skip. A strange mixture of fear and intrigue settled over her.
“You heard it too, didn’t you?” he asked, voice low, almost a whisper, matching the eeriness of the room.
Elina opened her mouth, but no words came.
Adrian took a step closer, the shadows seeming to cling to him rather than her. “You’re not alone,” he said. “But it’s only beginning.”
Her notebook slipped from her hands, pages scattering across the floor. The whispers returned, louder now, echoing through the room.
“Elina…”
And in that moment, the ordinary world she knew ended.
The darkness had begun its game.
To be continued…
The night air was thick with mist, curling around the streetlights like ghostly fingers. Elina pulled her coat tighter around her as she walked down the narrow alley, her heels clicking softly against the wet cobblestones. Every shadow seemed alive, every rustle of leaves a whisper meant only for her.
“Late again, Elina?” A voice cut through the darkness, low and amused.
She froze. Adrian Cole emerged from the shadows, his silhouette sharp against the fog. His eyes glimmered like dark jewels in the dim light, and a small smirk curved his lips.
“You scared me,” she admitted, though she couldn’t deny the thrill that ran through her at the sight of him.
Adrian stepped closer, the scent of his cologne—a mix of cedar and danger—reaching her. “I meant to,” he said softly. “It keeps you on edge, doesn’t it?”
Before Elina could respond, a faint sound of footsteps echoed from the alley behind her. She instinctively moved closer to Adrian. His hand brushed hers, a touch both electrifying and terrifying.
“They’re close,” Adrian murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “The people I warned you about… the ones who never forget.”
Elina’s heart raced. This was the first time Adrian had let her glimpse the world he came from—a world of shadows, power, and secrets. And somehow, in the midst of danger, she found herself leaning into him, drawn to the intensity in his gaze.
A figure stepped from the darkness, and the air seemed to crackle with tension. Adrian’s smirk vanished, replaced by a cold, commanding presence. “Stay behind me,” he said. “This is about to get… messy.”
Two men, dressed in black leather jackets, advanced silently. Their eyes were hard, their intentions clear. Adrian moved with fluid precision, stepping between Elina and the intruders.
“You shouldn’t be here, Cole,” one of them said, his voice low and threatening.
Adrian’s lips curved into a small, dangerous smile. “I go where I want.”
Before the confrontation could escalate, a sudden noise—a screeching tire, a shout from a distant street—distracted the men. In that split second, Adrian grabbed Elina’s hand, pulling her behind a stack of crates.
“Run!” he whispered urgently.
Adrenaline surged through her veins as they sprinted through the maze of alleys, the sound of pursuit close behind. Her chest heaved, but she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. Every step, every glance, every brush of his hand sent shivers down her spine.
Finally, they reached a secluded courtyard. Panting, she looked at him. “Who… who were they?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “The kind of people you never want to meet. They’re connected to my world… the one I tried to keep you out of.” His dark eyes softened for a fleeting moment. “But now, you’re in it. And I won’t let anything happen to you.”
Elina swallowed hard, feeling a strange mixture of fear and exhilaration. “I… I don’t know if I can handle this,” she admitted.
“You will,” Adrian said, his voice low, almost a growl. “Because I’ll be there. Always.”
A sudden noise behind them made them both freeze. From the shadows, a figure stepped forward—familiar, yet terrifyingly unknown. The mist parted, revealing a face Elina never expected to see. Her blood ran cold.
“Hello, Elina,” the figure whispered. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
And in that instant, the world she thought she knew crumbled. Shadows had always whispered… but now, they screamed.
