​Six years ago, his days were loud. They were filled with the frantic clicking of keyboards, the low, anxious buzz of server rooms, and the sharp, adrenaline-fueled voices of six other men over secure headsets.

Now, it was just the comforting weight of his small electronics repair shop, The Second Chance.

He sat at his workbench, a neat, organized space smelling faintly of ozone and old metal. A dusty, half-broken cassette player sat under the bright lamp. He was tracing a stubborn wiring fault, the work requiring a focus so complete it left no room for old memories. This peace was his armor. ​A loud chime—not from the shop’s bell, but from the back office—shattered the quiet. It was the sound of his personal laptop, a machine he hadn’t fully powered up in months. It was meant for bills and streaming, nothing more.

Jungkook frowned. He wiped his hands on a cloth, the metallic smell sharp on his palms, and walked into the small, dimly lit office.

The laptop screen was awake. It showed a single, blank text document. The screen should have been black, locked down. His security was layered and obsessive. Nothing should have been able to wake this laptop without a physical code. ​He approached the desk slowly, his muscles already tightening, the kind of reflexive tension he hadn't felt since he was twenty-one.

The laptop instantly locked down, the screen turning black. Jungkook let out a slow, shaking breath he didn't realize he was holding. He was safe. It was just a weird spam message, a random file glitch, nothing more. He was about to close the lid when the screen flickered back to life, ignoring his security lock.

The text was still there, but a second line had appeared.

The air left Jungkook’s lungs entirely. Query, Missing One.

Jungkook pulled out a tiny, encrypted burner phone he kept hidden beneath a false bottom in his tool chest. He pressed the single button, coded to Namjoon's safe number.

​It rang three times before Namjoon's low, steady voice answered.

Namjoon sounded tired but grounded, as if he had just been finishing up a late-night meeting about building regulations.

Jungkook said, the formal title slipping out automatically, the way he only used it when the stakes were too high for casual talk. His voice was rougher than he expected.

A beat of silence stretched, thick with understanding. Namjoon knew this phone was only for an emergency tied to the old life.

Namjoon's voice dropped, instantly stripped of its gentle community organizer tone. It was the leader's voice now, sharp and focused.

Jungkook repeated the lines, his eyes fixed on the blank screen of the now-closed laptop.

On the other end, Namjoon inhaled slowly, a sound like sandpaper rubbing wood.

Jin, the oldest, the funny one, was the best at keeping in touch, the glue that held the seven scattered parts together.

Namjoon argued, but the doubt was clear.

Namjoon said immediately. Yoongi (Suga) was the hardest to reach, the most bitter about their forced retirement. He had completely erased his digital footprint and worked as a secretive music producer, living a life of voluntary solitude.

Jungkook instructed, his mind beginning to race with the familiar, terrible thrill of strategy.

Jungkook threw on a black jacket, grabbed the burner phone, and locked The Second Chance for what he knew would be a long time. The metallic smell of his new life was being quickly replaced by the scent of his old one: fear and thrill.
