At first there were water droplets.
But those tiny droplets soon turned into heavy rain at the 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹.
I watched the rain that seemed melancholic.
I was startled at the sudden voice, but I figured.
I didn't turn. I didn't need to because it was 𝗵𝗶𝗺.
Emily
Do you have a knack for annoying people when they're alone?
I turned slightly to face him.
My gaze shifted from the rain towards the guy in front of me.
Theodore
Man, it's raining hard here.
Theodore
Do you think we'll get struck by lightning if we go out?
But it didn't humour me any bit.
I remained silent and watched as the rain grew heavier.
Theodore is the popular guy in this school.
Charismatic, social, lovely and a nice guy.
Everyone admires him. Who wouldn't? Probably me.
He's the embodiment of perfection;
and I'm the embodiment of foolishness.
I don't hate him. I don't have the courage.
Emily
Why are you here anyway?
Emily
School ended hours ago.
Theodore
Will you trust me if I say I was waiting for you?
He looked straight into my eyes with his Hazel gaze.
The lightening illuminated his face, especially those innocent eyes that widened.
I couldn't find any words to argue with him, hence I remained silent.
Theodore
I'm just kidding! Don't get all serious.
Theodore
I was studying in the library. And didn't realise that time passed quickly.
Theodore
It was the Dean who told me that it was late and the school ended.
Theodore
By the way, why were you here?
Theodore
You should've left early—
Emily
Why does it matter to you?
Theodore
Hey, you don't have to be so mean.
Theodore
We're friends, right?
His lips curled into a smile.
I rolled my eyes and faced the window again.
Theodore
How awful! I used to consider us friends. How could you do this to me, Emily?
Emily
Stop being so dramatic.
Theodore
I must say, that's bad behaviour.
Theodore
You won't be able to make friends that way, Emi—
Emily
Mind your own business.
But, he always brought reasons for me to be irritated.
I stormed out of that place and waited outside the entrance.
Emily
This always happens to me.
I consciously dug my nails into my palms.
I shivered as the cold wind grazed my face.
Emily
Everything is especially annoying today.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps approaching me.
I turned back only to find him again.
He panted, his breathing unsteady as he halted beside me.
We're completely different beings.
Theodore
I have an umbrella.
He suddenly said, his Hazel eyes softened and gentle.
He pulled out an umbrella from his bag and handed it over to me.
Theodore
Let's share it together.
He grinned, as he pushed the umbrella towards me.
I judged him in silence, wondering whether to take the umbrella or not.
Theodore
Oh, if you're uncomfortable sharing it with me, you can take it.
Theodore
I think I'll have to run home, but I'll be fine.
He handed the umbrella to me.
As he positioned himself to dash.
If he did leave like this, he would get soaked in the rain, and what if he catches a cold?
I don't want to be responsible for his sickness.
I considered it rationally and grabbed his arm before he could dash away.

We walked side by side, maintaining some distance between us.
Those tiny rain droplets drummed on the umbrella and fell to the ground.
The heavier the rain was, the colder the wind grew.
Our shoulders would occasionally brush each other.
Since we both lived in the same neighborhood and... Neighbours next door per that,
We kept walking in silence.
It was rare to see Theodore say nothing.
It was awkward. So, I tried to break the silence.
Emily
If... You're tired of holding that umbrella by yourself, should I handle it?
Theodore
Ah, that's fine. Let me handle it.
Theodore
By the way, this is the first time, we're walking home together, right?
I clutched the strips of my bag.
My heart pounded wildly, each beat louder than the last.
I glanced at Theodore, his lips parted to say something, but then closed again.
The world seemed to slow, his words hanging between them.
His reply came quickly, but softly. His voice was barely audible because of the rain.
Theodore
I like this moment...
Theodore
It's nice... If you don't mind, we can walk home toge—
We stopped near my house, and the rain sounded like some background noise for the conversation inside my house.
As soon as I stepped out of the umbrella, the rain soaked me wet, my clothes stuck to my body like a second skin.
I fastened my steps, opened the door in a swift motion and closed it.
My mother's shout echoed from the living room.
Woman
I know, you drank again!
Woman
Your foul mouth stinks of alcohol!
Woman
You don't care about our family at all!
My father listened to everything.
But he didn't argue back.
We knew what was better to do in this situation.
Because mom always needed a reason to continue her ranting.
That doesn't mean I'm blaming mom.
She's already had a lot on her plate.
My gaze met my elder sister Sarah.
I shifted my gaze, my fists clenched and I bit my lower lip.
I know, she's not all that tough.
Her eyes are already puffed from crying.
But she's acting like it's fine and telling me to scram.
Avoiding any further conflicts with my family, I headed to my room.
I slammed my bag on the ground.
I hastily removed my uniform and changed into pajamas.
Even though, I wanted to avoid thinking about this topic...
My mind still wandered to it, like it was the most natural thing.
It's so obvious my family's struggling because of money.
If we had more money, would things have been different today?
Suddenly, I heard a loud noise.
Mom probably started throwing dishes again.
Whatever it was. It was none of my concern.
I was never attached to my family to begin with.
And, that's why I want to get out of here ASAP.
I blinked again and again, despite trying to hold back...
Tears ran down my cheeks.
This is just a physical reaction... It has nothing to do with my feelings, right?
I stood nearby the open window,
Thunder rolled in the distance, distant yet threatening
Letting the cold seep into my bones, feeling smaller with every passing second.
