THE NIGHT WITHOUT ANSWERS

TRYING TO STAY CALM

The night was unusually dark, the kind that felt heavier than it should. Outside the wind whispering through the trees making an unsettling sound. inside a modest house Williams family sat together in the living room in front of the glow of the television light.

Their programme was suddenly interrupted by "BREAKING NEWS".

When the news reporter announced her tone grave. " over the last few days, several people have been found dead in the different areas of heaven brook city. The police are actively investigating the cases, although no concrete clues have been discovered yet."

Margaret lowered the volume of the television when silence fell over the room.

"This again?" Robert muttered. "that makes three weeks."

Clarabelle shifted uneasily and stared at the television screen where brutal crime scenes were showing. The screen was filled with flashing lights of police vehicles ambulance and Officers were standing with Grief and Sorrow while forensic investigators were collecting important proofs. The authorities were asking people to remain indoors at night and report anything suspicious to nearby authorities.

Robert turned off the television, "from now on, we are being careful." said firmly, "no going out alone at night."

"And even during the day." Margaret added turning toward clara, "you will keep something with you. a safety alarm paper spray, anything that can help you survive any casualties."

clara nodded though a knot had formed in her stomach.

Just then, the doorbell rang. The sound of the sudden ring echoed sharply through the house, making everyone in Williams family flinch. Robert stood up and walked toward the door. He tried to master up courage and open the door. his hand was shaking. He tried to grab the door knob with a shaky hand when again someone knocked on the door.

His hand stopped and heart was beating loudly. Robert was hesitant for a moment. Despite being hesitant he mastered up.courage and opened the door when,

Relief crossed his face.

It was his brother Daniel. Daniel standing at the doorstep in a police uniform. His eyes looked tired, hollowed by grief. A few weeks earlier he had lost his wife Lillian . soon after his daughter Grace was found dead as well taken by the same unknown murderer that terrorized the heaven brook city.

Robert asked daniel to come inside the house when they sat together in the living room with others. No one spoke first when daniel broke the silence and said,

"I won't stay long here. I came to warn you guys about a dangerous serial killer who's roaming in this city feely."

The room grew tense when Robert replied, "yeah, we were watching about that killer just now on the television."

Daniel continued saying, "all the victims have been girls and women.different ages, different neighbourhood. But there is a clear pattern on their bodies."

Margaret's breath caught, "what kind of pattern?"

"I can't explain everything here." Danien replied. "This case is still being investigated. But police have come to one conclusion that these killings are not random. The killer has some motive behind these killings."

his gaze settled on clara. "Please be careful. Do not go out alone. And always carry something to protect yourself clara."

Clara nodded unable to speak when Daniel stood up and adjusted his jacket, "I have night duties. i had to come here before it went too far. i'll come here to check whenever i get a chance."

At the door, he paused. " Lock everything. doors, windows everything. Do not take any chances."

Then Daniel stepped back into the darkness. Robert locked the door behind him, turning the key slowly.

outside the street is silent. inside no one spoke.

Yet all of the Williams family felt the unsettling certainty that whatever was haunting the heaven brook city was no longer distance.

WHAT TO DO IF.......

Everyone eventually returned to their rooms, the house growing quite as the night deepened.

Clarabelle lay awake on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Her mind refused to rest. The news report, her uncle's warning, the unspoken fear in her eyes, everything replayed again and again. She imagined every possible way of "WHAT IF-S", every consequence she wished she could push away. The thoughts slowly tangled together. Until exhaustion finally pulled her into sleep.

A sudden "thud" against her door jolted her awake.

Clarabelle gasped, her heart was racing. Fear flushed across her face as she sat up abruptly. A thin layer of sweat had formed on her forehead and breath came unevenly.

"Clara!" her father Roberts voice called. "Get up. you'll be late for school".

Realizing it was already morning she let out a shaky sigh and rubbed her face and got out of bed. After getting dressed, she went downstairs. The smell of breakfast filled the kitchen. Margaret was already settling plates on the table.

A few minutes later, Robert picked up his bag. Before leaving for his job, he kissed his wife on the forehead. Then gently patted both his children's heads.

" Be careful. "

Clarabelle felt the words as if it was carrying more chilling and heavyweight than unusual.

Clarabelle nodded.

Soon after Clarabelle and jackson grabbed their bags and stepped outside. The morning seemed ordinary. Yet the unusual feeling of fear and anxiety was more heavy to shake of for Clarabelle. Something was wrong in the air. Clarabelle felt like someone was watching her like a leopard and waiting for the right time for ambush.

As they walked toward the school, the memory of last night lingered in her mind.

The classroom buzzed with whispers that morning. Every corner of the grayhavan high seemed filled with the same topic, the police investigation, the unknown serial killer and the fear slowly spreading through the heavenbrook city. Teachers tried to maintain orders but they seemed distracted as well.

During the break, a boy from Clarabelle's neighborhood Jason approached her. He lived just few houses away and has always been curious.

"Your uncle is a cop, right?" He asked casually. "does he know anything about what's going on?"

Clarabelle hesitated for a moment, then slowly shook her head. Jason studied her face for a moment. He was hoping for more than a nod eventually walked away.

A few moments passed as the break ended and class resumed. The lessons passed in a blur, barely registering in Clara's mind. When the final bell rang, the students began packing up. Everyone was tired and happy to go home.

But no one was allowed to leave.

An announcement echoed through the halls, informing students that they were required to attend an additional lesson organized by the police authorities. It was an awareness program focused on Youths safety.

They were gathered in the school assembly hall. Clarabelle's eyes drifted towards the stage. where several officers were standing. Near the corner, she noticed her uncle. Daniel looked distant, repeatedly checking his phone. His attention was clearly divided, as though he were waiting for something more urgent than the session itself.

The lesson ended with warnings. reassurances and advice meant to calm the students and people's anxious mind. As the students exited the building, police officers stood by the doors, handing out safety items. Each student received a bottle of paper spray and pocket teaser The presence of a teaser and a paper spray gave Clarabelle a strange reassuring feeling, but the fear of ambushed by a serial killer who killed several older and teenage women never left her mind.

outside, students scattered quickly, eager to return home.

Clarabelle and little brother Jackson walked together. Jackson examined the item with interest.

"Do you think this even works without instructions?" Clarabelle asked quietly.

Jackson grinned and carelessly said, "I think it's kinda fun. Now we can scare anyone we want."

Clarabelle looked with confusion and annoyance at Jackson but kept quiet.

When they reached home, Jackson went straight to their mother to explain about the extra session. Clarabelle drained and uneasy headed upstairs to her room without a word. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it. Exhaling slowly as she realized she reached home safely.

The day had been normal on the surface but beneath it, something sinister was luring under the city's air. The feeling of being watched 24/7 never left.

MOMENTS THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW BETTER

Clarabelle stood up and placed her bag near the table. She was unaware of time and the situation for a second when her mother called her downstairs for lunch. Clarabelle flinched and said, "coming!"

As she was going downstairs, the doorbell suddenly rang. It was really odd that someone came by their house. Clarabelle froze at her spot. She was standing on the staircase.

She walked toward the door with a scared mind. Her mind was screaming something bad was coming. If she opens the door something worse will happen. She slipped one hand into her pocket. Fingers tightening in her pocket. With the other hand she grabbed the door knob and opened the door and jumped back on an instinct.

"Hey sweetie, why did you jump back? Are you okay?" Robert asked Clarabelle.

As she realized it was her father, her heart stopped racing slowly and relief washed over her face. She sighed and said, "Dad!"

She asked with a stupid smile, "you're home this early?"

"Yes honey!" Robert replied with a warm smile while he put his bag on the chair next to him. "I took a half day today. I thought I'd spend some more time with you all."

Clarabelle smiled back and replied, "That's really sweet of you."

"Come on! Let's have lunch together before it gets cold." Robert said with eagerness.

Robert went to the bathroom to freshen up while Clarabelle went to the kitchen to help her mother with the food.

After a few moments the Williams family gathered around the dining table. At that moment they forgot about everything else and enjoyed their lunch. For a brief moment, the atmosphere of Williams family seemed lighter than it had been all day. They enjoyed their meal in peace and happiness just for a second.

While serving the food, Margaret looked at Robert and asked, "How is your work going, honey?"

"Everything is going well at the restaurant." Robert replied with a smile on his face. He further added, "The customers really liked the meatball i served today."

Margaret smiled sweetly and gave a spoon full of lasagna to Robert.

Laughter filled the room.

After lunch, everyone was sitting on the sofa and chatting when Margaret cleared the table. Robert asked Clarabelle about her school when Jackson got up excitedly and said, "Dad! You know what happened today?"

Robert asked sweetly to his 14 year old son, "What? That cheerleader you liked came and proposed to you?"

"Dad no, that never happened ." said Jackson furious. "Today the teachers gave us weapons."

Robert was shocked and asked if he was serious. Clarabelle noticed the lack of sense and explained to her father, "Dad, actually after school the police arranged a session where they gave us a lecture about self defence and the Safety ----"

Her sentence was unfinished when Jackson eagerly said, "Then they gave us this." He showed his father a pocket knife that police have given the students.

Clarabelle's smile faded when she saw a knife in Jackson hand and asked, "A knife? Jackson teacher gave us pepper spray and a teaser."

Jackson laughed and said, "Clara, the teacher gave us boys a notifier and a pocket knife. Didn't you notice?"

Robert raised his eyebrows, surprised he took the knife carefully inspecting it with interest. "So they are really taking precautions now." "Good----. That's...... good." The words were vague and inattentive.

Robert snapped back and handed the knife to Jackson and asked it to keep safe and use it when it's absolutely necessary. Jackson nodded.

At that moment Clarabelle noticed a faint shift to Robert's expression. Just for a second, his jaw tightened. Something life rage and anger and desperation crossed his face. Before anyone can notice it disappeared.

"Dad?" Clarabelle asked quietly. "Something wrong?"

Robert looked at her, then smiled. "Nothing dear. Now let's watch our favorite slasher movie okay?" asked with enthusiasm.

By the time the movie was finished, evening had settled in the sky. Outside darkened, streetlights flickering on one by one. Dinner was quite, calmer then the night before. Yet the silence carried a heavy weight that Clarabelle couldn’t let go.
