Left Outside The Heart-

Left out-

He did everything they tell you to do when you love someone.

He stayed.

He waited.

He listened when it was easier to leave.

He showed up on the days no one noticed. Fixed problems that weren’t his. Became reliable, steady, safe. He thought love was built that way—brick by brick, patience over passion, loyalty over noise.

No one warned him that sometimes love doesn’t choose effort.

Sometimes it chooses timing.

Sometimes it chooses someone else.

He was always there—close enough to feel her warmth, far enough to never be chosen. The kind of closeness that hurts more than distance. The kind where you’re invited into someone’s world, but never given a place to stay.

She leaned on him. Trusted him.

Shared her fears, her tired days, her half-healed wounds. And he carried them without complaint. He never asked for more. He never demanded clarity. He told himself that love was quiet service.

But inside him, words piled up.

Words he rehearsed on lonely nights.

Words that stayed stuck behind his ribs.

Words that never learned how to leave his mouth.

Every “I’m here” meant I choose you.

Every “it’s okay” meant I’m breaking.

Every smile hid a sentence he swallowed whole.

He thought if he became important enough, she would feel it.

If he loved hard enough, fate would notice.

But fate doesn’t look back at unlucky people.

He watched her heart slowly open—

not to him.

And that’s when he understood what it means to be left out after doing everything.

Not rejected loudly.

Not pushed away.

Just… overlooked.

Like a door he stood in front of for too long, knocking softly, never realizing it was never meant to open for him.

When she finally spoke about love, it wasn’t his name she said.

She spoke gently. Kindly. Like someone who didn’t know they were ending a world. She thanked him for being there. For understanding. For

never leaving.

Those words stayed with him longer than they should have.

Thank you for being there.

Not I choose you.

Not I love you.

Just gratitude.

That’s the cruelest thing about one-sided love—it rewards you with appreciation instead of belonging.

He walked away slowly. Not because he stopped caring, but because staying meant losing himself completely.

Some goodbyes are silent because saying them out loud would make them real.

He carried the unspoken words with him. They hung over his heart like a locked door—sentences etched into wood no one would ever read.

Years later, he would still feel them sometimes. Not as pain, but as weight. A reminder of how deeply he once loved. How much he gave. How unlucky he was to love at the wrong time, in the wrong way, to the wrong person.

She would remember him as someone kind. Someone constant. Someone who did everything right.

And that would be the tragedy.

Because being remembered as good is not the same as being chosen.

Some people are not meant to be loved back.

They are meant to love deeply—

and walk away quietly,

with all the words still hanging

over the door of their heart.
