TRANSMIGRATED AS A MERMAID

Chapter one: Nightmares or A fragment of memory

The sound of waves echoed across the great deep blue sea as a young girl was snuggled tightly in the arms of a woman on top of a speedboat that shaker vigorously in the middle of the great sea.

The sky was dark and cloudy, the winds were as cold as ice.

The wind howled as the waves slapped violently against the sides of the boat, rocking it back and forth like a fragile toy.

“Mum…” the little girl whimpered, her tiny fingers clutching the woman’s jacket as though letting go would cause the world to disappear.

“Don’t worry, sweetie,” the woman whispered, her voice shivering but gentle. “Help is on the way, just hold on tight.”

She pulled the girl closer, wrapping her arms around her protectively, even as cold seawater splashed onto their skin.

The girl shut her eyes tight , the cold engulfed her entire body as she shivers, the banging sound of the waves hitting the boat and rocking it echoed in her mind. She felt herself slipping as she slowly shut her eyes and everything fades.

Mia jolted awake with a sharp gasp.

Her head slammed lightly against the cafeteria table as she sucked in air like she had been underwater for too long.

Her heart raced wildly in her chest.

“Another weird dream…” she muttered

She slowly lowered her head onto her folded arms, letting out a tired sigh.

“Sighing isn’t going to solve your problems, y’know.”

Mia turned her head slightly to see a brunette standing beside her. The girl had brown orbs, her bright red lips curved into a lazy smile, with a lollipop resting between her lips.

“I’ve tried everything, Sally,” Mia muttered. “But I can’t seem to get it right.”

She lifted her head fully, revealing her bright purple eyes and black hair that flowed effortlessly down her back.

Unlike Sally, who wore a vibrant black-and-blue dress that accentuated her curves, Mia was dressed simply in a crop top and blue jeans that hugged her figure.

“Just let it be,” Sally said casually as she sat down next to her.

“As much as I want to, I can’t,” Mia replied. “You know I can’t afford to fail this. If I do, I’ll repeat the year.”

Sally shrugged. “That isn’t such a big deal. That’s an extra year to hook up with the hotties. Especially Luke.” She winked

Mia frowned. “No thanks, I would rather hookup with the creepy nerd just to pass, Besides, Luke and I aren’t together anymore.”

“The way you both look at each other says otherwise.”

Mia didn’t respond.

Just then, laughter echoed across the cafeteria. As a tall, dark haired, effortlessly handsome guy walked in with some guys beside him, talking and laughing..

Mia’s chest tightened.

Their eyes met for barely a second before she quickly looked away.

“You still love him,” Sally said softly.

Mia swallowed. “It’s not that simple.”

Before Sally could respond, the school bell rang loudly.

“Great. Marine Biology,” Sally groaned. “My worst subject.”

“Mine too.” Mia groaned, “I see no

reason why we are studying sea life, the sea and all it’s creepy creatures should remain where they are.” Mia said as she stood up

”You definitely have a strong feeling towards the sea.” Sally said as she stood up and they both walked away from the cafeteria.

Mia got to class with Sally and took her seat near the window, staring blankly at her desk while the teacher prepared the projector.

“Today, we’ll be discussing ocean ecosystems,” the teacher announced.

The screen flickered and Endless blue water filled the classroom screen.

Mia’s breath hitched.

Her heart began to pound.

She felt a fear that felt very familiar

The sound of waves crept into her ears, slow and heavy, though the room was silent.

Her palms became sweaty.

Her vision blurred.

Suddenly, she wasn’t in class anymore.

She was little and in the middle of the ocean with her hands wrapped tightly against the woman holding her

“Mum..”

“Mia?” Sally shook her arm gently.

Mia snapped back to reality, breathing heavily.

“You ‘kay?” Sally whispered.

“Urm Yh…I need air” Mia stood up abruptly and rushed out of the classroom.

Luke turned around and watched her as she ran out from the class.

”weird.” Sally said quietly

Mia ran to the bathroom and locked herself inside the nearest stall and slid to the floor

Her hands trembled as she pressed them against her face.

“Why do I keep seeing things, is it just a nightmare or a fragment of my memory.”

Mia walked slowly down the hallway, her footsteps soft against the tiled floor.

She lifted her head slightly and froze as she saw Luke leaning against the wall by the lockers, his arms crossed, his gaze fixed on the floor like he had been waiting.

Her chest tightened.

She looked away immediately and continued walking.

“Still having those episodes?” His smooth, calm voice reached her ears.

Mia stopped slowly turned to him.

“Why do you care?” she asked coldly before turning away again.

Luke sighed and quickly walked up behind her, gently grabbing her arm

“What are you…”

“Why are you being so stubborn?” he interrupted.

“Stubborn?” Mia repeated, pulling her arm away sharply. “You thought I was and needed mental help.”

“That’s not what I said,” Luke replied quickly. “And that isn’t enough reason for you to break up with me.”

Mia laughed bitterly.

“So you think that’s the only reason I broke up with you?” she snapped. “Either way, it doesn’t matter since you’re with Becky now.”

Luke’s expression darkened. “Mia… listen.”

“I don’t need your concern,” she said, her voice shaking. “And I am not crazy.”

Without waiting for his response, she turned and stormed away, her heart pounding painfully in her chest.

She got to her quiet apartment, the walls were pained grey and the lights were turned off, only a faint glow of a wall lamp illuminated the room.

Mia dropped her bag onto the couch and slowly sank beside it, exhaustion settling into her bones.

Her eyes drifted to the small table in the corner, where a photo frame stood. She reached for it and looked at it with a soft expression.

“Hi, Mum… Hi, Dad…”

Her fingers trembled as she brushed over the glass.

Their smiles stared back at her. She had the exact same purple eyes as her mum and her dads dark hair.

“I keep having visions,” she whispered. “They feel so real… I can’t tell if they’re nightmares or something else.”

“Maybe Luke is right… maybe I am going crazy.” She said as a sob escaped her lips.

Suddenly, her phone rang.

She quickly wiped her face and picked it up.

“Hi, girl. I didn’t see you after you left class. Everything alright?” Sally’s cheerful voice filled the room From the phone.

“Yes… everything is fine,” Mia said. “I wasn’t feeling too well, so I decided to go home early.”

“Kay, By the way I got us tickets to the opening of La Faux Hotel!”

Mia blinked. “Really? How did you get them?”

“I asked Shawn,” Sally laughed. “Forget about how I got it and think about how much fun we are going to have, There’s a restaurant, a theatre, a game room, a club and even a rooftop pool!”

“I’m not sure about…”

“I won’t hear it,” Sally cut in. “You said you needed frash air and this is exactly what you need, Who knows? You might even find inspiration to finish your paper and pass finals.”

Mia hesitated, Then sighed softly.

“Alright… I can’t say no to you, can I?”

“Of course not. Meet me by 9 p.m. Don’t be late!” Sally said as she hunged up

Mia lowered her phone slowly as She looked at her reflection in the dark screen.

“I guess a little fun is exactly what I need right now…”
