Scam My Way To The Top

Chapter 1: The Wrong Gamble

The underground casino buzzed with voices, smoke twisting in the dim light like restless spirits. Kal hopped onto his worn wooden stool, his short rabbit ears twitching as he sized up the crowded table.

“Hey, little guy,” a burly gambler sneered, eyeing Kal’s small frame and fluffy tail. “You sure you belong here?”

Kal’s whiskers twitched, a sly grin curling his sharp muzzle. “I belong wherever the chips are.”

A sharp laugh came from the corner. “Don’t let his size fool you. He’s quick with those paws.”

Kal’s paws moved fast, stacking chips and sliding cards with practiced ease. At the far end of the table, a man sat silently, shoulders broad beneath a dark hoodie. His presence was different—calm but deadly, like a shadow that swallowed the light. Nobody dared meet his cold, sharp eyes.

Kal’s heart skipped. This was no ordinary gambler.

“Raise the stakes,” Kal said, flashing a confident grin.

The dealer’s hands trembled as he dealt the next round. With a nimble twitch of his paw, Kal palmed an extra card beneath the table.

A rough voice barked, “Cheater!”

Kal’s nose twitched defiantly. “Just taking what I deserve.”

The man in the hoodie shifted slightly. His voice was low, calm, but heavy with warning.

“You just gambled with the wrong man.”

Kal’s grin faltered.

When the final cards were revealed, Kal’s heart sank. He had lost.

The man stood slowly, sliding off his hoodie. Underneath, sharp eyes gleamed with cold power, framed by dark hair. The room froze as the gambler’s true identity became clear.

“Dexter Vanderlain ,” someone whispered—the feared mafia boss known to control everything beneath the city’s shadows.

Dexter’s gaze locked onto Kal’s.

“You belong to me now.”

Kal’s ears flattened. This was no longer just a game. “And in my world, debts aren’t paid with money alone.”

Kal’s paws trembled slightly as he swallowed. This wasn’t a threat. It was a promise. A sentence.

“Wh-what do you want from me?” Kal forced the words out, trying to keep his voice steady.

Dexter smiled — just a flicker, but it sent chills down Kal’s spine.

“What I want doesn’t matter. What you want is to survive. And that means playing by my rules.”

Kal looked down at his hands, the smallness of his frame suddenly feeling like a curse rather than a blessing.

The game had changed. The stakes were higher than ever.

And Kal had just lost everything.

Kal’s mind screamed one word: Run.

Before Dexter could say another word, Kal sprang from his stool, knocking over chips and drawing sharp gasps from the gamblers around him.

“Get him!” someone shouted.

Kal’s small legs moved faster than ever, weaving through the crowded casino like a flash of white fur. The sharp scent of smoke and danger chased him, but all he could think about was escape.

He burst out into the cold night air, heart pounding so loud it threatened to burst his tiny chest. The city streets blurred as he raced toward home—his only sanctuary.

Inside the small apartment, Kal’s brothers, Felix and Frederick, sat quietly around the table, their faces lighting up with surprise as Kal slammed the door behind him.

“Kal? What happened?” Felix asked, his dark eyes wide with concern.

Kal didn’t waste a breath. “I gambled with the wrong man. Dexter Vanderlain. The mafia boss. He—he says I belong to him now.”

Frederick’s jaw tightened. “That’s bad news.”

Felix moved quickly, pulling the tablecloth over the legs of the wooden table. “Come hide. We can’t let him find you.”

Kal dove under the table without hesitation, curling up into a tight ball as Felix and Frederick pulled the cloth down like a curtain.

Outside, Kal’s breaths came shallow, ears pressed flat, every noise sharp and threatening.

“Don’t worry, little brother,” Felix whispered. “We’ll keep you safe. For now.”
