How We Grow.

The Day begins with the chirps of early birds calling out welcome to the morning.
The small coastal city with little, simple people rises to greet the day.
It isn’t a grand city, it’s just one of the few cities that is still on the developing list in India.
There are no luxurious malls, no rich houses, no chic cafés.
It’s just a simple place but with a magic of its own..
Magic that filled many lives with joy and love.
Yes. The story begins in India, in a small house, with a young girl.
Brown skin shines as the sun hits it, eyes as dark as the night sky stare at the people walking in the streets and small lip stay wide open in wonder ..
She doesn’t understand any thing that’s happening around her. Her house seems to be in some chaos. People walk around her with baskets of flowers, some in ladders, adjusting the lights.
Some function will be taking place. The little girl didn’t know what it’s about and neither could she care less…
She only wanted one thing and it was the arrival of someone.
Mrs.Dasari
Nina! Nina!
Oh darling, here you are.. come inside. You are blocking the workers.
Oh! look at these stains on your hands.. come in the house now. You have to get ready.
The young girl, Nina, couldn’t stop her mother as she was dragged inside to get all dolled up, not that she didn’t like it. Everyone’s attention would be on her and she adored that but she desired someone’s presence there very deeply.
Someone who meant a lot to her.
Mrs.Dasari
Dear ( addressing the makeup artist-Nancy) oh thank god you’re here. Here is my younger daughter, I was thinking we will get her ready later, after everyone’s done, what do you think?
Nancy
Sure Ma’am that will be a good idea. She is just a child, she only needs a few minutes to get ready. She can sit now.
Please don’t let her run as much as possible. We don’t want her to look tired before the function.
Raaga
Ma, can I please not wear this dress. Appa will say something, it’s sleeveless…
Mrs.Dasari
Your appa will be fine. , you are just a chIld, stop Acting like this.
Raaga
But you… yesterday you.
Worker
Ma’am, can you please come and check the decorations.
Mrs.Dasari
Coming, raaga just wear the dress.
Nancy, I will leave them to you.
Raaga, Nina’s Elder sister. They weren’t close. They had an eight year age gap. Nina was just 5 and raaga,12, obviously there wasn’t much they can share.
There wasn’t much that Nina could understand about the situation, all she knew is that if she would misbehave now, she would too get some dose from her mother. So she stayed put, sitting and observing.
Her sister looked sullen, almost in tears. Nina didn’t know what to do, she just looked. Nancy didn’t seem to notice. Before she did, her sister ran into the bathroom pretending to sneeze.
Nancy
Sweetly! Are you ok?
Raaga
Yeah, I am fine. It’s just my cold… I will be out.
Something was wrong here. But Nina wouldn’t be able to understand this is entire situation until 10 years later. Now, all she can do is sit and stare as her sister bites her lips and gets ready.
Nancy
Ma’am, the children are ready!
Mrs.Dasari
Oh wow! There my little angles. Look in the mirror, you look fantastic. Oh dear god! My daughters are so beautiful. Come here let me kiss you!
She runs away irritated. Nina just stands there, obviously not knowing why she had to run.
, she is tackled by her mothers hugs and kisses and is later brought into the decorated hall.
She, as usual is the Center of the attention. The youngest child of the Dasari’s. The pampered daughter.
Her cheeks are pulled and she is grabbed by elders competing for her attention.
She is called all kinds of sweet things, kissed and carried around.
She likes this attention but she desires something else more .
She desires someone’s presence, someone’s playfulness that could make her run.
When would they come?
