Twin Wills : The Codex Of Silence

The Scholar and the Shield

Introduction

The world of Kaelith was shaped by six elements—five that gave form, and one that was forbidden. Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space built mountains, rivers, stars, and breath. But Volis, the element of Will, was sealed away, feared for its power to erase meaning itself.

In the crumbling silence of Lysera Library, beneath dust-laced scrolls and forgotten runes, a young scholar traced a sigil that should not exist. Eryndor Veylan, delicate in frame but sharp in mind, had uncovered the Codex of Hidden Truth—a book that whispered of a weapon not meant to destroy everything, but to end one thing perfectly.

Outside the ruins, shadows stirred. The Blackswang Order, once guardians of balance, now fractured and hungry, hunted the bearer of Volis. Their knights moved like silence incarnate, cloaked in betrayal and bound to a deeper curse.

And so fate placed a shield beside the scholar. Kaelen Dravos, an exiled knight of Earth, stepped from the mist with stone in his gaze and scars on his soul. He was not trusted. He did not ask to be. But when Eryndor looked up from the Codex, Kaelen was already watching him—silent, protective, and impossibly close.

Their bond began not with words, but with necessity. Yet in the quiet between danger and discovery, something deeper stirred. A scholar with forbidden power. A knight with a broken past. And a silence that could either save the world—or end it.

1.The Scholar and The Shield

The ruins of Lysera Library lay in silence, broken arches reaching toward the night sky like the ribs of some ancient beast. Dust drifted in the moonlight, shimmering faintly as if the air itself remembered the voices of scholars long gone. At the center of the hall, a cracked stone table pulsed with forbidden light.

Eryndor Veylan leaned over it, his slender fingers trembling as they traced the sigil carved into the surface. The mark burned against his palm, not with pain but with a strange rhythm—like a second heartbeat. He had not meant to awaken it. He had only wanted to study the Codex, to understand its secrets. But the Codex had chosen him.

The whispers came softly at first, curling around his thoughts like smoke. Volis… Will… erase… reshape… The words were not words, yet they pressed against his mind, heavy and insistent. His breath caught. He pulled his hand back, but the glow followed, etched now into his skin.

A shadow stirred at the edge of the hall.

From the broken doorway stepped Kaelen Dravos, tall and broad‑shouldered, his cloak heavy with the scent of earth and battle. His armor bore scars of exile, each mark a story untold. His eyes were dark, unreadable, yet fixed entirely on the scholar before him. He did not announce himself. He simply stood, silent as stone, until Eryndor turned and their gazes met.

The silence between them was sharp, almost unbearable. Eryndor’s lips parted, but no words came. Kaelen’s hand shifted to the hilt of his blade, then stopped. Instead, he crossed the room with deliberate steps, the sound of his boots echoing against stone.

“You should not touch that,” Kaelen said, voice low and steady.

Eryndor’s fingers tightened around the glowing sigil. “I know,” he whispered, eyes wide. “But it has already touched me.”

For a heartbeat, Kaelen’s expression softened. He reached out, gloved hand resting lightly against Eryndor’s shoulder. The gesture was protective, grounding, and far too intimate for two strangers. Yet in that moment, the scholar felt shielded—not from the Codex, not from the world, but from himself.

The silence shattered with the sound of armored boots.

Agents of the Bureau of Demons entered the ruins, their sigils glowing faintly as they surveyed the scene. The Codex’s awakening had not gone unnoticed. Their commander stepped forward, eyes narrowing at the mark burning on Eryndor’s palm.

“The scholar has been chosen by Volis,” he declared. His voice carried authority, but also fear. “He cannot be left unguarded. The Blackswang Order will hunt him.”

Kaelen’s gaze flicked to Eryndor, then back to the commander. He stepped forward, cloak shifting like stone. “Then appoint me,” he said. “I will shield him.”

The commander hesitated. Kaelen was an exile, a knight with a shadowed past. His name carried whispers of betrayal, of battles fought on the wrong side. Yet his presence was immovable, his devotion already clear.

“You?” the commander asked, suspicion sharp. “Why should we trust you?”

Kaelen’s jaw tightened. “Because I have nothing left but my oath. Let me shield him. If he falls, the world falls with him.”

The hall held its breath. Eryndor’s heart raced, torn between fear and gratitude. He barely knew this knight, yet Kaelen’s words rang with a conviction that felt unshakable.

After a long silence, the commander nodded. “Kaelen Dravos,” he announced, voice echoing through the ruins, “you are hereby appointed protector of Eryndor Veylan, bearer of Volis. Guard him with your life, for his fall would mean the world’s end.”

When the Bureau departed, the ruins fell quiet once more. The Codex glowed faintly, casting shadows that seemed alive.

Eryndor looked up at Kaelen, uncertainty flickering in his eyes. “You don’t even know me,” he murmured.

Kaelen’s gaze softened, just for a heartbeat. “I don’t need to. I know what I must protect.”

The scholar’s breath trembled, caught between fear and comfort. Kaelen’s devotion was too intense, too sudden, yet undeniably real. The Codex pulsed between them, binding scholar and shield in silence.

Thus began their journey—not with trust, not with love, but with silence heavy enough to bind them.
