1.
Morning in Mumbai never really wakes up quietly. The sky is still soft, washed in pale gold and faint pink. While the city is already alive. Local trains scream past like clockwork monsters, tea vendors shout their first "chai chai" and the air smells like a mix of wet roads, sea breeze and early breakfast being fried somewhere.
But far away from the chaos, tucked behind tall iron gates and rows of manicured palms, stands a Mansion that feels untouched by the city's madness. White marble floor. Huge french windows. Curtains flutter lazily as the morning breeze sneaks in and upstairs...silence.
In a massive bedroom, sunlight spills gently across silk sheets where a girl is sleeping like the world does not concern her at all. One arm is thrown over a pillow, hair messy, face half-buried, breathing slowly and peacefully. She looks like someone who stayed up too late arguing with life and decided to ignore it today.
Nothing.
The door creaks open just a little. Her brother stands there, arms crossed, already irritated.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
Wake. Up. (says loudly)
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
Avanya Rathore, wake up.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(turns her face to either side, pulls the blanket higher and mumbles something)
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
Unbelievable. (Muttered and knocked again, harder this time)
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
(sigh dramatically and step back, a dangerous smile forming on his face) Ohh, so that's how it is.
Just then,
📱Riiiing....Riiing.. Avanya's phone vibrates aggressively on the bedside table. She groans. A deep, offended groan. One eye opens just one, peeking at the screen like it personally betrayed her. She fumbles, misses the phone once, finally grabs it and answers without even looking.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Hello...(said in a sleepy and annoyed voice)
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
GOOD MORNING, SLEEPING BEAUTY. (screamed through the phone)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(jolts upright) what the, ARE YOU CRAZY. (yelled)
From the doorway, her brother laughs like a villain who just succeeded in his evil plan. She glares at the phone, then at him, eyes half closed, face scrunched in pure morning rage.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
I was sleeping.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
And I was knocking for five minutes. (replied innocently)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(drop back onto the bed dramatically, spreading herself like a starfish) tell the sun to rise later. I'm not ready.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
Get up. You have things to do.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(stretched lazily, arms above her head, yawning)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Mumbai wakes up too early. (muttered)
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
And you wake up too late. (smirked)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(shoots him a lazy glare)
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
(smile innocently)
Avanya groans again, slowly rolls to the edge of the bed, feet touching the cold marble floor, for a moment, she just sits there, head bowed, hair covering her face like she's mentally preparing for battle.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
By the way, you do remember you own a bakery, right?
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Yes, your highness.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
And maa is angry. Very angry. She says if you're late again, she's personally coming to wake you up.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(eyes widened) okay. I'm up. I'm up.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
(nodded and left from there)
She stood in the middle of her room for a second, staring into space, then clapped her hands once.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Alright, bakery girl mode on. (said and moved toward the bathroom)
The bathroom filled with steam as winter sunlight slipped through the frosted window. She moved slowly, still lazy, humming to herself while brushing her teeth.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(started singing while bathing) 🎵Oh silly billy, baanke O balam, tod le bharam, chhod de ghabrana, bajaye tu ye door se horn kya.....
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(stopped)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(frowned at her reflection) why am I singing like an old movie.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(shrugged) doesn't matter.
After a quick shower, she wrapped herself in a soft towel, hair dripping, cheeks flushed from the warm water and cold air fighting each other. Winter called for comfort, not drama.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(opened her wardrobe and stared thoughtfully)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
No Indian. No fusion. (muttered to herself)
Avanya finally picked, a soft beige turtleneck sweater layered with a long camel. Colored coat, straight fit black trousers and ankle boots. She dried her hair just enough and twisted it into a loose bun, letting a few strands fall freely around her face. No perfection. Just soft chaos. Light makeup, barely there. Pink lips. A touch of mascara.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(leaned closer to the mirror, tilting her head) okay. Bakery owner. Flower girl. Slightly late. Still stunning.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(smiled at herself, slipped on her watch and grabbed her scarf)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
🎵 today will be sweet...like sugar and bread....(Started humming again)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(spun once, coat swaying, grabbed her bag and headed for the door)
2.
By the time Avanya stepped out of the room, fully ready, the mansion downstairs was already awake. The dining area smelled like ghee, spices and morning warmth. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, landing on the long dinning table where her brother was already seated, scrolling on his phone, coffee in hand, looking far too awake for her liking.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
(looked up) wow. Sleeping till noon clearly does wonders.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(rolled her eyes) Good morning to you too.
Before she could sit, her mother's voice floated in the room.
Usha Rathore/ Fl mother
Oh, so this is the time madam wakes up now. (said while looking her up and down slowly)
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
Maa, she probably thought today is Sunday.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
It is winter. Even the sun wakes up late.
Usha Rathore/ Fl mother
(placed a bowl on the table with exaggerated calm) Yes, yes. And baker Sahiba needs her beauty sleep. Bakery can wait, flowers can wait, customers can meditate outside.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
(burst out laughing) Imagine customers chanting outside "wake up, ma'am".
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Both of you are very funny. (muttered, pulling out a chair)
Usha Rathore/ Fl mother
You know, when I was her age, I would wake up before sunrise.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
(nodded seriously) Same. When I was her age, I was responsible. Disciplined. Unlike someone who opens a bakery and then sleeps through it.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(crossed her arms) Bhai, jealousy doesn't suit you.
Roy Rathore/ Fl father
(cleared his throat) that's enough.
Roy Rathore/ Fl father
She works hard. Late nights, early mornings. Let her sleep. (said gently)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(smiled instantly) Thank you, Papa.
Usha Rathore/ Fl mother
(sighed dramatically) Fine. But tomorrow no sleeping like a hibernating bear.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
No promises. (replied sweetly)
Breakfast was served, hot aloo parathas straight off the tawa, a bowl of fresh white butter, curd, pickle and steaming chai.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(took the first bite and closed her eyes) This is heaven. Yummy.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
Food works fast on her.
They ate together, laughter mixing with clinking plates, light argument and that quiet warmth that only mornings at home have. After finishing, she stood up, grabbing her bag.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Okay, I'm leaving.
Roy Rathore/ Fl father
(stood up from the chair and kissed her forehead)
Roy Rathore/ Fl father
Drive safe.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(hugged her brother, then quickly pecked his cheek before he could react) Don't touch my stuff.
Kiansh Rathore/ Fl elder brother
Too late.
Usha Rathore/ Fl mother
(pulled her cheek lightly) Sleep less. Work well. Eat on time.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(smiled) Ji, maa.
With a final wave, Avanya stepped out, morning sun on her face, scarf her neck and headed toward her bakery. A place filled with bread, flowers and her dreams.
The bakery had another corner most people noticed only after a while. Near the window, where sunlight fell just right stood a floral shelf. Wooden racks lined with glass jars, ceramic pots and baskets filled with fresh flowers. Soft pastels, deep red, winter whites. The air smelled different.
Avanya named her bakery "MEET". She didn't name her bakery "MEET" for business. She named it for hope. 7 years ago, when her life quietly broke when someone she loved disappeared without answers, she learned one thing very clearly "some meetings are not about staying.... they're about changing you". The word "MEET" meant many things to her. A place where people meet happiness, even if it's for a few minutes. A place where lonely hearts meet comfort, without being asked questions. "MEET" was the word she held onto because she believed, that someday, somewhere, unfinished meetings would happen again.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(unlocked the door, pushed it open and smiled)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Good morning. (whispered)
The smell of yesterday's bread still lingered faintly.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(tied her apron around her waist, rolled up her sleeves and turned on the lights)
Soft yellow bulbs came alive, reflecting off wooden shelves, glass jars and neatly arranged display trays. Even though everything was already cleaned, she cleaned it again. While cleaning, she pulled out a small notebook from her bag, the one with messy pages, flour smudges and late night ideas scribbled everywhere.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(flipped to a page titled) "New recipe -Try tomorrow"
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(lips curved into a grin)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
This is it. (murmured)
She started prepping, measuring flour carefully, cracking eggs with practiced ease, melting butter slowly.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(hummed again) 🎵 sugar and love and a bit of magic...
The bell above the door jingled.
Avanya turned to see him, her co-worker Vansh who is more like a friend to her, jacket zipped up, hair slightly messy, eyes bright with excitement. He was in his early twenties, energetic and always eager to learn.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
You're early, trouble.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
Hey, I'm not trouble. My name is Vansh, and I'm a hardworking employee.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(raised her eyebrow) Who burnt three batches of cookies yesterday?
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(coughed) learning process.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(laughed softly) come. Today I'm teaching you something new.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(followed her like a puppy)
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
So what are we making today. (asked, peeking into the bowls)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
A new recipe. Rose pistachio chiffon cake.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(eyes widened) Fancy.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
It's delicate. (said while washing her hands)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Light batter. Gentle folding and no rushing.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(nodded seriously) Got it. Gentle like... emotions?
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Like cake. (corrected calmly)
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
Yes, ma'am. (grinned)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(handed him the whisk) Slow. Don't attack it.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(started whisking too fast)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Stop. (said immediately while placing her hand over his)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Like this. (guides his hand, slowing the movement)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Feel the batter. If it loses air, the cake loses soul.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(blinked) wow. Deep.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(smiled faintly) Baking is honest. It reflects how you treat it.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(glanced at her) you talk like that about everything.
Customer 1
Good morning, Avanya.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Morning, Auntie.
Customer 1
Is the strawberry tart ready?
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Yes, auntie. Fresh batch.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(packed the boxes neatly and pulled out small cream-colored sticky notes and a pen)
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
You always write something.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(nodded, writing carefully)
Customer 1
What did you write today?
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(smiled and read softly while sticking it on the box)
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
"May your day be as soft as cream and as sweet as hope".
Customer 1
That's beautiful.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(smiled and handed the order) Have a lovely day.
A young woman stood near the counter, holding a small bouquet kept beside the register.
Customer 2
These flowers. You give them with cakes, right?
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(looked at the flowers) yes. White Ranunculus.
👆🏻 white Ranunculus flowers.
Customer 2
What do they mean?
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
They mean charm. And quiet attraction.
Customer 2
That's romantic.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(lips curved faintly) someone once told me that not all love needs loud colors. Some stay soft.
Customer 2
(nodded slowly) I'll take them. And chocolate cake also.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(wrapped the cake box, tucked the flower inside and added a note)
She wrote: for feelings that bloom silently but stay forever ".
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(handed it over with a gentle smile)
Customer 2
Thank you. (said and left from there)
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(jumped in front of her) I got it.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(pulled the cake out carefully)
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
(look at her, amazed) it worked.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
Told you.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
By the way, from where did you learn all these meanings of flowers, from books?
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(shook her head slightly) From listening.
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
To who?
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(looked at the cake, then away) Someone who loved explaining meanings .
Vansh/ Fl co-worker
Lucky person.
Avanya Rathore/ Fl
(smiled without answering)
Avanya wiped her hands, straightened her apron and walked back to the counter, carrying sweetness, memories and a heart that still remembered flowers by name.
