ECHOES OF THE UNSEEN

Episode 1: The Veins of the Earth

The sun has bled out, leaving a bruised purple sky. The SUV sits paralyzed on a dirt road that seems to be getting swallowed by the encroaching forest. The trees here are gargantuan, their bark black and peeling like burnt skin. There is no wind, yet the branches seem to vibrate with a low, sub-sonic hum. Inside the car, the digital clock is flickering erratically
Liam
Liam
(Slamming his palms against the steering wheel) No, no, no! This thing was serviced two weeks ago! It’s not just dead—it feels like the power was sucked right out of the wires
JAX
JAX
(Leaning forward from the backseat, eyes wide) I told you, man. The locals call this the ‘Threshold.’ You don’t bring electronics in here. It’s like the forest has its own frequency
Chloe
Chloe
(Staring at her phone screen, which is covered in flickering green lines) My phone is at 90%, but the screen is... melting. Look at the pixels. They look like they’re crawling
Sarah
Sarah
(Whispering, her breath fogging the window) Do you hear that? The silence? It’s too loud, Liam. It feels like someone is holding their breath right next to my ear
Liam
Liam
(Grabbing a heavy-duty flashlight) Everyone, out. We aren't sitting here like canned meat. The old ranger station is only half a mile up this path. We get to a landline and call for a tow
As they step out, the ground doesn't crunch; it gives away. The soil is unnaturally soft, covered in a network of thick, pulsating black roots that look more like veins than wood. A thick, gray mist begins to swirl around their ankles, moving with a strange, predatory intelligence
Chloe
Chloe
(Stumbling) Ugh! The ground... it feels like walking on a giant tongue. It’s wet and... warm?
JAX
JAX
(Flicking on his light, scanning the trees) Don’t say that, Chloe. Just... don't. Keep the light high. I don't like the way those shadows are stretching toward us
Sarah
Sarah
(Pointing at a tree trunk) Liam, look! The bark... it’s moving
Liam
Liam
(Shining his light on the tree) It’s just woodlice or beetles, Sarah. It’s a forest. Things crawl
Sarah
Sarah
(Voice trembling) No. The bark is breathing. Look at the ridges. They’re rising and falling
A sudden, sharp CRACK echoes from the canopy above, followed by a wet, sliding sound. From the pitch-black woods to their left, a voice emerges. It is thin, desperate, and hauntingly familiar
? ? ?
? ? ?
(Sobbing) ... Is someone there? Please... I’m stuck... it’s so cold...
Chloe
Chloe
(Gasps) That sounds like... that sounds like my sister! But she’s back at the dorms!
Liam
Liam
(Gripping his flashlight like a weapon) Chloe, stay back. It’s impossible
? ? ?
? ? ?
(Now perfectly mimicking CHLOE’S voice) ... Liam? Jax? Is that you? I can’t feel my legs... something is pulling me down...
JAX
JAX
(Panicking) That IS her voice! How does it know our names?!
Sarah
Sarah
(Screaming) IT’S NOT HER! Look at the bushes! They aren't moving, but the voice is coming from right behind them!
The ground beneath Jax’s feet suddenly erupts. Dozens of thin, wire-like tendrils shoot out from the dirt, wrapping around his legs and waist in a split second
JAX
JAX
(Screaming) IT’S GOT ME! LIAM, HELP! IT’S BURNING!
Liam
Liam
(Grabbing Jax’s arms, pulling with all his might) I’VE GOT YOU! CHLOE, GRAB HIS BELT!
Chloe
Chloe
(Crying, pulling) IT’S TOO STRONG! IT’S PULLING HIM INTO THE EARTH!
JAX
JAX
(His eyes rolling back, his skin starting to turn a grayish, bark-like texture) ... Liam... the roots... they’re inside my mouth... I can taste... the leaves...
A sickening, wet 'TH WIP' as Jax is yanked vertically into the air—not the ground. He vanishes into the dark canopy above
Sarah
Sarah
(Looking up, hysterical) HE’S GONE! HE’S GONE!
The remaining three sprints through a thicket of thorns that seem to grow across the path as they run, trying to trip them. They see a dilapidated wooden Watchtower ahead. They burst through the door and barricade it. The interior is filled with the smell of rotted lilies and old blood
Liam
Liam
(Back against the door, gasping) We’re okay... we’re off the ground... the roots can’t get us up here
Chloe
Chloe
(Curled in a ball, sobbing) Jax... it just took him... it just took him like he was nothing!
Sarah
Sarah
(Staring at the wooden walls of the tower) Liam... why is the wood so soft?
Liam
Liam
(Touching the wall) It’s just rotted, Sarah. It’s an old building
Sarah
Sarah
(Screaming) NO! LOOK AT THE FLOOR!
The floorboards begin to ripple like water. A face begins to push through the wood—Jax’s face, but his eyes are now replaced by budding flowers, and his mouth is sewn shut with vines
JAX
JAX
JAX-THING:(A muffled, distorted voice coming from the walls themselves) ... The forest... doesn't... want you to leave... we need... more... Echoes...
Liam
Liam
(Trying to open the door) THE DOOR IS GONE! IT’S JUST SOLID WOOD NOW!
Chloe
Chloe
(Looking at her own hands) Liam... my skin... it’s turning into leaves...
The Watchtower is no longer a building; it is a digestive tract. The walls are closing in with the sound of grinding stone and wet, snapping timber. The air is thick with the scent of crushed pine and iron
Chloe
Chloe
(Pinned against the wall, her ribs cracking) LIAM! IT’S SQUEEZING ME! I CAN’T BREATHE!
Liam
Liam
(Desperately hacking at the wooden floor with a rusted metal pipe) I’m trying! Chloe, hold on!
Sarah
Sarah
(Looking up in horror) The ceiling... it’s coming down!
A sickening, heavy CRUNCH. Chloe’s scream is cut into a wet gurgle as a massive wooden beam spears through the wall, pinning her heart-level to the structure
Liam
Liam
(Roaring in grief) CHLOE! NO!
Sarah
Sarah
(Pulling Liam’s arm) She’s gone, Liam! She’s gone! The floor is breaking—JUMP!
Liam and Sarah tumble out of the collapsing tower just as it implodes into the dirt. They hit the ground hard. Liam lands awkwardly; a loud SNAP echoes through the trees as his tibia pierces through the skin of his leg
Liam
Liam
(Howling in agony, clutching his shattered leg) AAAAA AGH! MY LEG! SARAH, MY LEG IS SNAPPED!
Sarah
Sarah
(Dragging him by his armpits, sobbing hysterically) Get up! Liam, please get up! It’s coming out of the tower!
Liam
Liam
(Eyes wide with shock, looking at the bone sticking out of his jeans) I can't... I can't walk... Sarah, just leave me. Look at it... look at it!
Rising from the wreckage of the tower is something far worse than roots. A Primal Entity emerges—it has the body of a starved, towering deer, but its "fur" is moss and its "antlers" are jagged, bloody branches. Its face is a human skull fused with dark oak, and it moves with the twitchy, unnatural speed of a devil
???
???
The "Deer-Devil" lets out a sound that isn't a roar—it’s the sound of Chloe’s final death-rattle, amplified a thousand times. It begins to trot slowly, savoring the fear. Liam is crawling through the mud, leaving a thick trail of blood behind him
Liam
Liam
(Crying, gasping for air) It’s right there... Sarah, it’s watching me crawl! Why won't it just kill me?!
Sarah
Sarah
(Hyperventilating, trying to lift him) We have to reach the road... we’re so close... please, Liam, don't give up!
Liam
Liam
(Stopping, looking at Sarah with hollow eyes) Look at the trees, Sarah. They’re moving with it. There is no road. It’s changing the forest. We’re just... we're just toys
???
???
(Using CHLOE’S voice) ...It only hurts... for a second... Sarah... let him... go...
Sarah
Sarah
(Screaming at the darkness) SHUT UP! SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
The Entity lunges. It doesn't bite; it uses its antler-branches to spear Liam through the shoulders, lifting his broken body into the air. He dangles like a puppet, his blood raining down on Sarah’s face
Liam
Liam
(Choking on blood, looking down at Sarah) Run... Sarah... please... tell my mom—
A wet, heavy snap as the Entity’s antlers close like a vice, crushing Liam’s torso
Sarah
Sarah
(Falling to her knees, completely broken) I’m sorry... I’m so sorry...
Sarah stops running. She doesn't scream anymore. She just stares at the Entity as it drops Liam’s limp body and steps toward her. It leans its skull-face down, its breath smelling of the very earth they walked on. It wraps a wooden "hand" around her throat, lifting her gently, almost lovingly
Sarah
Sarah
(A final, whispered prayer) Please... let it be over...
The screen cuts to black. The sounds of tearing and screaming fade into the sound of... birds chirping?
Bright, beautiful morning sunlight filters through the trees. The "Blackwood Forest" looks like a normal, peaceful park. There is no blood. There is no watchtower. The SUV is gone. The birds are singing
A bright yellow Jeep pulls up to the exact spot where the first car died. A new group—a young couple and their dog—jump out, laughing
REPORTER
REPORTER
(Stretching his arms) Man, the air is so fresh out here! Told you this was the perfect spot for a hike
???
???
(Smiling, looking at the tree line) It’s so quiet. It’s almost like we’re the only people in the world.
As they walk into the woods, the camera pans down to the dirt. A single, bloody camera lens is buried in the mud, half-covered by a new, rapidly growing root

Episode 2: The Anatomy of a Heartbreak

Midnight. The air is stagnant, heavy with the scent of upcoming rain. The apartment complex stands like a silent monolith against the black sky. On the fourth floor, a window slides open with a rhythmic click
A girl, pale as marble, takes a step and another, without any creak. Goes over to the balcony and looks out, her hair being swayed by the winds
? ? ?
? ? ?
(Her voice a hollow reed) Can I Take The Final Step?....
The cold air hits softly on her face, and she puts her leg on the fencing. Slowly but surely climbs up the railings
Chuckles
? ? ?
? ? ?
The Air Is So Cool Tonight...
Takes a look down, stares blankly at the road down. Closes her eyes and leans forward
? ? ?
? ? ?
Bye Bye....
Jumps off. The railings cold... The road smeared with blood
The scene cuts to a bright, golden bedroom. Sunlight spills over messy stacks of sketchbooks and a half-eaten bag of chips. It’s exactly one week since the girl fell. The town has moved on—or is trying to
Ethan groans, buried under a duvet. He fumbles for his phone, squinting at the brightness. He unlocks it. The screen displays a candid photo of Claire laughing near a fountain. He gazes at it for a long moment, a soft, hopeful smile tugging at his lips
Ethan
Ethan
(To himself) Just stay cool tomorrow, Ethan One day left
(A loud, energetic thumping echoes from the front door—three fast knocks, followed by two slow ones. The signature 'Ben' beat)
Ethan
Ethan
(Yelling) I’m up! Stop trying to dismantle my house, Ben!
The air is crisp, smelling of wet pavement and bakery yeast. Ethan and Ben walk shoulder-to-shoulder. Ben is swinging a paper bag of bagels, his skateboard tucked
Ben
Ben
(Tossing a bagel at Ethan’s chest) Breakfast is served, Picasso! You look like you’ve been haunted by a ghost—or just your own thoughts
Ethan
Ethan
(Taking a bite) A bit of both. I couldn't sleep. The Scavenger Hunt is all over the school forums. Everyone is hyped
Ben
Ben
(His face turning serious for a split second) Yeah, well, people need the distraction. Did you see the telephone pole on 5th Street? They added another flyer. The girl from the apartments
Ethan
Ethan
(Sighing) I saw. My dad is losing it, Ben. He says people don't just 'fall' or 'vanish' like this. He thinks there's someone... or something... out there
Ben
Ben
(Grinning to break the tension) Tell your dad to relax. It’s a small town; people probably just get bored and move to the city without telling anyone. Besides, who has time for monsters when we have a Chemistry test and the hunt tomorrow?
Ethan
Ethan
(Laughing) Only you could find Chemistry scarier than a serial killer
Ben
Ben
(Winking) Trust me, Mr. Henderson’s grading scale is a much slower way to die
The high school hallway is a chaotic sea of teenagers. Near the trophies, Marcus stands tall, his arm draped like a heavy chain around Claire’s neck. He’s laughing loudly at a joke Ethan can’t hear
Ben
Ben
(Whispering) Look at 'The Hulk' over there. I swear his neck gets thicker every time he sees you
Ethan
Ethan
(His eyes fixed on Claire) He’s not even looking at her, Ben. He’s looking at his own reflection in the trophy case. She looks... I don't know, suffocated
Ben
Ben
(Nudging him) Then be the oxygen, dude. Marcus is all ego. Tomorrow night at the hunt, she’s on your team. That’s your moment. Don't waste it being a shy statue
School’s out. The golden hour turns the park into a dream. They approach a white ice cream truck with a faded jingle. The Ice Cream Guy leans out, his skin unnaturally pale, eyes fixed forward
Ben
Ben
(Cheerfully) Two chocolate swirls, my man! And make ‘em extra tall. My friend here is preparing for a life-altering romantic mission
Ethan
Ethan
(Blushing, hitting Ben’s arm) Ben! Shut up!
Ben
Ben
(Ignoring him, whispering) Hey, Eth... check out the guy. He hasn't blinked in three minutes. I’m telling you, he’s not human
Ethan
Ethan
(Watching the man scoop ice cream with mechanical precision) He’s probably just tired of teenagers, Ben
Ben
Ben
(Laughing as they walk away) No way. I’m calling it now—he’s a monster. Don’t worry dude, tomorrow night you go talk with your crush, and I’ll keep an eye on the ice cream guy, so he doesn't turn into a monster and eat us
Ethan
Ethan
(Giggling) If he tries to eat us, I’m tripping you, so I can get away faster
Ben
Ben
(Gasping) Betrayal! Pure betrayal!
They reach the pond. Claire is sitting on their usual bench, a book closed on her lap. She looks lonely amidst the beauty
Ben
Ben
(Stopping) Alright, Picasso. This is your stop. I’m gonna hit the skate park before the sun goes down. Don't be a weirdo—just talk to her. See ya at home?
Ethan
Ethan
(Nodding) See ya, Ben. Thanks for the bagel
(Ethan walks to the bench, his heart racing)
Ethan
Ethan
(Sitting down) Hey. Mind if I share the view?
Claire
Claire
(Her face transforms into a warm, genuine smile) Ethan! Please. I was actually hoping you’d show up. Marcus is at his gym session, and I just... I needed to breathe
Ethan
Ethan
(Softly) The school is a bit loud lately, isn't it?
Claire
Claire
(Looking at the water) It’s everything. The rumors, the missing kids... it’s like everyone is waiting for the sky to fall. But you... you always seem so grounded. I’m really glad we’re a team tomorrow
Ethan
Ethan
(Breathless) I am too, Claire. More than anything
Claire
Claire
(Checking her watch, sighing) I should get going. But... thanks for sitting with me. I'll see you at the starting line?
Ethan
Ethan
(Waving) I wouldn't be anywhere else
Ethan is back in his room. The house is silent. He lies on his back, staring at the ceiling, his dog Buddy snoring softly by the bed. He pulls out his phone, looks at the photo of Claire, and sighs contentedly
Ethan reaches over to his desk, finishing a single math problem before closing the book
Ethan
Ethan
(Whispering) Tomorrow is the night
Outside his window, the wind picks up. A single "Missing" flyer for Liam Miller tumbles across the lawn, sticking to the fence like a cold hand. Ethan turns off the light, finally falling into a peaceful sleep, unaware that the Hunt is already beginning
The school parking lot is transformed. It’s 8:00 PM. Orange and purple floodlights bathe the brick walls in a strange, festive glow. Music is thumping from a pair of speakers near the gym entrance. Students are buzzing with excitement, holding glowing neon sticks to identify their teams. It feels like a carnival, completely erasing the gloom of the "Missing" posters
Ben
Ben
(Adjusting a GoPro on his chest, laughing) Alright, Picasso. The game is simple: 10 clues, 10 locations. First team back with all the tokens wins the 'Golden Trophy' and, more importantly, bragging rights for a year
Ethan
Ethan
(Scanning the crowd, his stomach in knots) Have you seen her?
Ben
Ben
(Pointing toward the gym doors) Right there. And unfortunately, she brought the 'Lumberjack' with her
Ben
Ben
Marcus is literally over there doing push-ups to 'warm up' for a scavenger hunt. We have to beat him. For the honor of every nerd in this zip code
CLAIRE and MARCUS approach. Claire looks effortless, her hair tied back, wearing a light jacket. Marcus is in full athlete mode, eyes narrowed at the map
Marcus
Marcus
(Clapping Ethan on the shoulder) Ready to lose, Art-boy? Try to keep up. I don't want to spend all night waiting for you to finish your 'sketches' of the clues
Claire
Claire
(Rolling her eyes, laughing) Ignore him, Ethan. He’s just competitive. I’m actually really excited! I’ve never seen the school this late at night. It feels... adventurous
Ethan
Ethan
(Smiling, his heart soaring) It’s definitely going to be a night to remember
Ben
Ben
(Checking the first clue) 'I’m where the giants sleep but never grow.' The Wood shop! Come on, Ethan! Move those legs!
Ethan
Ethan
(Laughing, dodging a group of freshmen) I’m coming! Don't let Marcus get there first!
Marcus
Marcus
(Sprinting past them, laughing) Too late, losers! I’m already halfway there!
Ben
Ben
(Reading a clue) 'I have a spine but no bones, I have leaves but no tree.' Easy! The Library! Move it!
Marcus
Marcus
(Sprinting ahead) Out of the way, nerds!
Ethan
Ethan
(Laughing as he runs beside Claire) He’s going to go to the Botany lab, isn't he?
Claire
Claire
(Giggling, breathless) Definitely. He stopped listening after the word 'leaves
Ethan
Ethan
(In the Library, finding the token under a desk) Got it! Clue number four!
The next thirty minutes are a blur of pure joy. They find tokens in the library, under the cafeteria stage, and inside a trophy case. The school feels safe—a fortress of childhood memories
Ben
Ben
(High-fiving Ethan) That’s eight tokens! We’re actually winning! Even the 'Ice Cream Guy' at the gate looked impressed when we ran past
Ethan
Ethan
(Grinning) Did he blink yet?
Ben
Ben
(Giggling) Nope. Still staring into our souls. I’m telling you, if we win that trophy, I’m rubbing it in his pale face
Claire
Claire
(Looking at the final clue) Okay, guys. The last two aren't in the building. 'Where the shadow of the school meets the whispering pines
Marcus
Marcus
(Wiping sweat from his forehead) The boundary woods. Right behind the football field. Let’s go, I want that win!
They exit through the back doors near the football field. The transition is subtle. The loud music fades into a hum. The "School Woods"—the small patch of trees before the town begins—is dark, lit only by the distant floodlights of the field
Ben
Ben
(Clicking on his flashlight) Okay, last two tokens. They’re supposed to be near the old maintenance shed
Ethan
Ethan
(Feeling the cool air) It’s weirdly quiet out here compared to the gym
Claire
Claire
(Walking close to Ethan, her arm brushing his) It’s peaceful. Like the school is a different world (Tugging at Ethan’s sleeve) It’s kind of cozy, isn't it? Like we’re the only people in the world
They reach the clearing near the rusted shed. Ben’s flashlight beam sweeps over the weeds. It catches something glass and metallic
Ben
Ben
(Bending down) Got it! Wait... this isn't a token
(Ben picks up a shattered camera lens. He wipes the mud off. The engraving 'L. MILLER' glints in the flashlight beam)
Ethan
Ethan
(Taking it, his voice dropping) This is Liam’s. Ben... Liam disappeared in Blackwood. That’s miles from here. No one ever found his body or his gear. Why is this sitting behind our school?
Ben
Ben
(Looking around, his bravado vanishing) Maybe he’s back? Maybe he’s... hiding?
Marcus
Marcus
(Approaching, his face pale) That’s not funny, man. Liam’s gone. Everyone knows that
Claire
Claire
(Looking at the lens, her expression soft and concerned) Maybe someone found it in the woods and brought it here as a sick joke?
Suddenly, a high-pitched, distorted whistle drifts through the trees. It’s the jingle of the "Frosty’s" ice cream truck, but it sounds like it's being whistled through a throat full of gravel
Ben
Ben
(Freezing) Do you hear that? That’s the truck... but the truck is at the front gate
Marcus
Marcus
(Shouting into the dark) HEY! WHO’S THERE? MARSHALL? IS THAT YOU?
The whistling stops. A second later, it starts again—but this time it's much closer, coming from the thicket behind the shed
Ethan
Ethan
(Whispering) It sounds like him. The Ice Cream Guy
Claire
Claire
(Clinging to Ethan’s arm, looking terrified) Ethan, I’m scared. Let’s just go back. We don't need the last token
Ben
Ben
(Voice trembling) If he’s out here... and the truck is at the gate... then who is at the gate?
Ethan
Ethan
(Whispering, pulling Claire closer) It sounds like him. The Ice Cream Guy. But why would he be out here?
Ethan looks at the lens in his hand, then at the dark woods, then at Claire. She looks completely innocent, trembling against him
Claire
Claire
(Trembling, her hands gripping Ethan’s jacket tightly. Her voice is small and full of genuine fear) Ethan, I’m scared. Please... I don't care about the last token. Can we just go back?
Ben
Ben
(His eyes wide) If he’s out here... then who did we see in the truck?
Ethan
Ethan
(Decisive) Everyone, stay together. Marcus, get in front. Ben, stay behind Claire. We’re going back to the gym Everyone, stay together
Marcus
Marcus
(For once, not arguing) Yeah. No argument here. Let’s move
As they turn and begin to jog back toward the safety of the school floodlights, the camera lingers on the maintenance shed. High up, tucked under the rotted wooden eaves, a small, black Bluetooth speaker is hidden in the shadows. The "Ice Cream" whistling continues to play from it, fading slowly as the group gets further away
The group hits the edge of the football field. Behind them, the "Ice Cream" whistling from the shed fades into the wind. Ahead, the school floodlights are blinding. They should feel safe, but the silence from the school is wrong
Ethan
Ethan
(Panting, pulling out his phone) I’m calling cops. I don't care if Marcus thinks it’s a prank
Ben
Ben
(Checking his own) Don't bother. My screen is black. It’s dead, Eth
Ethan
Ethan
(Frantic) Mine too. What about the Principal? He was just on the mic two minutes ago. Why did the speakers go quiet?
Claire
Claire
(Shivering, pointing toward the building) Look at the Gym windows. They’re fogged up. The music is so loud... they can’t hear anything happening out here
They enter the side door of the North Wing. The transition is instant: from the cold wind to a heavy, suffocating heat. The hallway is long, orange-lit, and completely empty
Marcus
Marcus
(Shouting) HELLO? IS ANYONE HERE?
(Sound: His voice echoes down the lockers. No reply. Only the distant, muffled 'thump-thump' of the bass from the far-off Gym)
Ben
Ben
(Whispering) The awards ceremony started ten minutes ago. Everyone—the teachers, the seniors, the Principal—they’re all locked in the Main Gym for the final count. We’re in the ghost wing
Claire
Claire
(Pointing to a door with a small window) Look! The Faculty Lounge! The lights are on... someone is in there
Ethan slams his shoulder into the door. It’s unlocked. They stumble inside, desperate for a teacher to take charge. The room is warm, and a coffee pot is still hissing on the counter
Ethan
Ethan
Mr. Henderson? Coach? We need help!
Mr. Henderson, the chemistry teacher, is sitting in his usual leather armchair, his back to them. His head is tilted back as if he’s taking a nap
Ben
Ben
(Moving forward, hopeful) Mr. Henderson! Wake up! This isn't a joke!
(Ben reaches out to shake the teacher’s shoulder. As he touches him, the chair swivels slowly. Mr. Henderson’s eyes are wide open, staring at the ceiling. His mouth is stuffed with something white and frozen. A wooden ice cream stick is tucked behind his ear like a pencil.)
Under the teacher's hand is a small, pink ice cream stick. On it, written in neat, black ink: "RESERVED
Claire
Claire
(Screaming, backing into the hallway) HE’S DEAD! HE KILLED HIM!
Suddenly, the Gym music stops. The school goes deathly silent for three seconds. Then, the Intercom system kicks on with a screech of feedback
(The same distorted 'Ice Cream' whistle plays for five seconds, then stops)
Marcus
Marcus
(Snap-acting, his fear turning into a roar) HE’S IN THE CLOSET! I SAW THE DOOR MOVE!
Ethan
Ethan
MARCUS, NO! STAY IN THE LIGHT!
Marcus
Marcus
(Charging toward the Janitor’s Closet at the end of the hall) I’M GONNA BREAK HIS NECK!
Marcus kicks the door open. It’s a small, dark room. He lunges inside. The door doesn't just close—it slams with a heavy, mechanical 'CLICK' like a vault
ETHAN & BEN: (Slamming into the door) MARCUS! OPEN UP!
A heavy, sliding 'WHOOSH' comes from behind the wood—the sound of 200 pounds of weight dropping the laundry chute. Then... silence. When Ethan kicks the door open, the room is empty. Just a hole in the floor where the grate used to be
Ben
Ben
(Staring at the hole) He’s gone. The chute... it leads to the boiler room. Three floors down
Claire
Claire
(Sobbing, pulling Ethan away) We have to go to the Art Wing! The security shutters there are manual! We can lock him out!
Ethan
Ethan
(Looking at his hands, shaking with rage and terror) He’s picking us off. He’s taking us one by one
Claire
Claire
(Whispering, her eyes fixed on the dark hallway behind Ethan) Then don't let him take me, Ethan. Please
Behind them, at the very end of the orange hallway, the figure in the white apron slowly steps out from the shadows. It holds a single, red balloon. It lets it go, and the balloon floats toward the ceiling as the "Ice Cream" whistling begins to play from the speakers again
The Art Wing is a maze of glass display cases and heavy canvases. The red emergency lights are strobing, making every shadow look like it’s leaping toward them. The distant thumping of the gym music is gone—replaced by the rhythmic clack-clack-clack of the "Ice Cream Guy’s" boots on the tile behind them
Ben
Ben
(Panting, his glasses slipping down his nose) The security gate! If we can get past the ceramics studio, I can drop the manual shutter!
Ethan
Ethan
(Checking behind them) He’s gaining on us! Go! Go!
Claire
Claire
(Limping slightly, leaning heavy on Ethan) I can't... my ankle... Ethan, don't leave me!
They scramble past the heavy steel tracks of the fire-safety shutter. Ben reaches for the emergency release lever on the wall
Ben
Ben
(Shouting) Get through! I’m dropping it now!
Claire
Claire
(Suddenly "tripping" right under the heavy metal gate) AGH! MY FOOT!
Ethan
Ethan
(Lining back to grab her) CLAIRE!
As Ethan pulls Claire across the threshold, her hand "accidentally" brushes against the release lever before Ben is through. The heavy, industrial steel shutter drops like a guillotine—BANG!—sealing the hallway
Ethan
Ethan
(Screaming, hitting the metal) BEN! ARE YOU OKAY?!
Ben
Ben
(Muffled, from the other side) I’M TRAPPED! ETHAN, THE LIGHTS ARE OUT OVER HERE! HE’S RIGHT BEHIND ME! I CAN HEAR THE WHISTLE!
Ethan
Ethan
(Clawing at the steel) BEN! FIND THE MANUAL OVERRIDE!
Ben
Ben
(A terrifying, high-pitched scream) NO! GET AWAY! ETHAN, HELP M—!
A dull 'thud' against the metal door. Then, the sound of something being dragged across the floor. Then... absolute, crushing silence
Ethan collapses against the shutter, sobbing. He has lost everyone. Marcus is in a hole, Ben is gone, and he is alone in the dark with Claire
Ethan
Ethan
(Broken) He got him. He got Ben. (He turns to Claire, reaching for her) Claire, I’m so sorry. I couldn't save them
Claire
Claire
(In the dark, her voice strangely calm, almost a whisper) Ethan... why are you crying? I thought you said you’d always keep me safe
Claire
Claire
(Standing in the center of the dark Art Room. She isn't crying anymore. She is perfectly still. She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small, black remote)
Ethan
Ethan
(Confused) What is... what is that?
Claire
Claire
(Clicking the button. Suddenly, the "Ice Cream" whistle stops mid-note. The hallway goes silent.) It was getting a bit repetitive, wasn't it? The whistling?
Ethan
Ethan
(Backing away, his heart stopping) Claire? What are you doing? Where’s the guy? Where’s the man in the apron?
Claire
Claire
(Walking toward him, her voice calm and melodic) There is no man, Ethan. Just a mannequin on a pulley and a very expensive Bluetooth speaker
Ethan
Ethan
(Staring at her) No... Marcus... the teacher... I saw him!
Claire
Claire
(Laughing softly, a cold, sharp sound) You saw what I wanted you to see. You wanted to be the hero, so I gave you a monster to fight. You wanted to protect me, so I gave you a reason to hold my hand
She pulls a heavy palette knife from a jar of turpentine. She looks at her reflection in the blade
Claire
Claire
Marcus is in the boiler bin. Ben is in the kiln room. And you, Ethan... you’re the centerpiece. I’ve been drawing you for months, but the "Echo" was always wrong. I realized I can’t capture the soul... unless I’m the one who breaks it
Ethan
Ethan
(Realizing the horror) You... you planned all of this? The scavenger hunt? The dead phones?
Claire
Claire
(Sweetly) I’ve had the master keys since June, Ethan. I rigged the shutters. I iced the teacher. And I kept you for last... because you’re my favorite
She lunges. Not like a monster, but like a surgeon. Ethan tries to block, but his hand is still trembling. She hits him with the blunt end of the knife, and as he falls, the camera zooms in on her face—wide-eyed, beautiful, and completely, utterly insane
Claire
Claire
(Whispering) Welcome to the collection, Ethan
The Art Room is bathed in the rhythmic, bloody pulse of the emergency red lights. Ethan is on the floor, his head ringing from the blow. He looks up, his vision swimming, as Claire stands over him. She looks breathtakingly calm
Ethan
Ethan
(Choking out) Why... Claire... why them? Why us?
Claire
Claire
(Kneeling beside him, her face inches from his. She strokes his cheek with a terrifying, motherly tenderness.) Because, Ethan... art is about capturing a moment that never changes. People are so messy... they leave, they grow up, they forget. But a collection? A collection stays exactly where you put it
Ethan
Ethan
(Weakly) They'll find you... the police...
Claire
Claire
(Giggling softly as she pulls a heavy roll of zip-ties from her bag) The police are looking for a man in a white apron. Not only that, but they’re looking for a "Ghost." They’ll find me shivering in a corner, the poor, broken survivor who lost all her friends. They’ll give me a blanket and a ride home... right back to the house where I’ve kept a space for you
Claire leans in and kisses his forehead. It’s a cold, dry kiss
Claire
Claire
(Whispering) Sleep now, Ethan. The hunt is over
She clicks a final button on her remote. The heavy security shutters of the Art Room slide down, sealing the room in total, silent darkness. The last thing we see is the glint of the palette knife in her hand before the screen goes black
The sun is rising over the high school. Blue and red police lights strobe against the brick walls. Students are being led out in blankets, crying

The disappearance of Ethan, Marcus, and Ben tonight has cracked open a case that is far larger than anyone imagined. This isn't just a school tragedy; it’s a regional mystery. We’re now looking at a total of eight missing students. It began three weeks ago with Liam and his friends, who vanished without a trace in Blackwood, miles away from this campus. Then came the baffling disappearance of Tyler right here from the school halls—gone in between classes with no witnesses. Now, Ethan’s group has been added to the list. Despite Blackwood being miles away, the signature remains the same: no struggle, no suspects, and that haunting whistling. Police are now investigating if these locations are connected by a single, roaming predator, or if West bridge High is simply the final stop for a killer who started in the woods
A camera flash. We see Claire being helped into an ambulance. She is wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, her face pale, her eyes wide and watery. To the world, she is the victim. To the camera, just for a split second, she allows a tiny, perfect smile to touch her lips

EPISODE 3: EMPTY ECHOES

The entrance of a luxury high-rise apartment. Everything is shiny, new, and smells like fresh paint
Mark pushes the heavy door open. He is carrying three bags and looking exhausted but happy. Chloe follows him, holding a single small plant like it's a treasure
Mark
Mark
Dropping the bags with a loud thud) "And... we are in! Welcome to the 20th floor, Princess
Chloe
Chloe
Walking slowly into the center of the room, looking around in shock) "Mark... this is insane. Look at the floor! I can literally see my reflection in the wood
Chloe feels a lump in her throat. She keeps waiting for someone to wake her up from this dream
Mark
Mark
(Teasing) "Careful, don't drool on the floor. I just paid the security deposit. If you ruin the polish, they’ll take my firstborn child as payment
Chloe
Chloe
(Laughing and hitting his arm) Shut up! You’re such a drama queen. But seriously... how? Three years ago we were sleeping on a floor that had literal mushrooms growing in the corner
Mark’s smile fades for a split second as he remembers the smell of that old, damp room and the sound of his own stomach growling so Chloe could eat
Mark
Mark
(Softly) "Hard work, Chlo. And a lot of luck. I promised you when we left that old chawl that I’d never let you feel cold or hungry again. This is just the start
Chloe walks to the big window. The city lights look like gold dust below them
Chloe
Chloe
I wish Mom could see this. She used to say that one day you’d be a 'Big Man'. She was right
Mark feels a sharp sting of sadness. He misses his parents, but he knows he has to be the 'Parent' now for his sister
Mark
Mark
(Changing the mood quickly) "Okay, enough of the emotional stuff! I’m starving. Since I paid for the house, you’re in charge of the first meal. What’s it gonna be? Instant noodles or... fancy instant noodles?
Chloe
Chloe
(Rolling her eyes) "Wow, what a choice. Fine, I'll go find the kettle. But don't complain if I use your expensive 'studio' table to chop onions
Mark
Mark
(Screaming playfully) "Don't you dare! That table costs more than your college tuition!
Chloe runs into the kitchen laughing, while Mark starts opening the suitcases, finally feeling like he can breathe after years of running
The living room, late at night. There is no furniture yet, just two sleeping bags laid out on the floor. The only light comes from the city glowing through the massive windows
Mark and Chloe are sitting on their sleeping bags, leaning against the wall. They are eating noodles out of paper cups. The room is so quiet they can hear the wind whistling against the glass
Chloe
Chloe
(In a low voice) "It’s too quiet, Mark. Back in the old neighborhood, I used to fall asleep to the sound of bikes, people shouting, and that one aunty who always argued with the milkman at 5 AM. Here... I can hear my own heart beating
Mark
Mark
(Smirking) "That’s called 'peace,' Chloe. People pay millions for this silence. No more thin walls. No more hearing the neighbor's TV through the bricks
Mark feels a strange pressure in his chest. The silence is actually making him feel a bit exposed, like they are on a stage with no one watching
Chloe
Chloe
Do you remember the 'Dream Jar' we made after Dad passed away? We wrote down everything we wanted. A big TV, a car, a house with a balcony...
Mark
Mark
And you wrote 'a lifetime supply of chocolate.' I still have that paper somewhere in a box
They both laugh softly, but the laughter dies down quickly. The shadows in the corner of the empty room seem very long and very dark
Chloe
Chloe
(Looking at her feet) "Mark... thank you. For not giving up. When things got really bad, when we had no money and you were sick but still went to work... I was so scared. I thought we wouldn't make it
Mark
Mark
(Reaching out and ruffling her hair) "Hey, look at me. I’m your big brother. It’s my job to make it. You just worry about your studies and becoming a big architect so you can build me an even bigger house later
Mark stands up and walks to the window, looking down at the world. He looks like a king, but his hand is secretly gripping the window ledge very tightly
Mark
Mark
Go to sleep, Chlo. Tomorrow we go shopping. We’re going to buy the softest bed you’ve ever seen
Chloe
Chloe
(Yawning) "Fine. But I get the window side. Goodnight, Mark
Mark
Mark
Goodnight, kid
Chloe lies down and closes her eyes. Mark stays standing by the window. He looks at his reflection in the dark glass. For a split second, he thinks his reflection isn't moving at the same time he is
Mark
Mark
(Is it just the exhaustion? My reflection... did it just blink when my eyes were open?)
Mark shakes his head and turns away from the window, rubbing his tired eyes. He crawls into his sleeping bag, but he keeps his phone flashlight on for a little longer than usual
The apartment, the next morning. Sunlight is pouring in, making the empty rooms look bright and golden. There is a light fog outside the window, hiding the ground below
Mark is standing at the balcony door with a cup of coffee. Chloe is sitting on the floor, surrounded by open boxes, trying to find her hairbrush
Chloe
Chloe
(Frustrated) "Mark! Did you pack my brush in the kitchen box again? I look like a lion!
Mark
Mark
(Not looking back, staring at the clouds) "Check the blue bag. And stop complaining, the lion look suits you
Chloe finds the brush and walks over to stand next to him. Because of the heavy fog, they can't see the streets or the other buildings. It looks like their apartment is floating in the sky
Chloe
Chloe
(Whispering) "Whoa... look at the fog. We’re so high up, it feels like the rest of the city just disappeared
Mark
Mark
(Looking at her, his voice soft and calm) "It’s like we are the only people in this world, Chlo. Just you and me. No one to bother us, no one to tell us what to do
Mark actually likes the idea. For years, he had to deal with people—bosses, landlords, creditors. Being 'alone' feels like freedom
Chloe
Chloe
(Shivering slightly despite the sun) "It’s a bit creepy though, isn't it? Like if we screamed, no one would even hear us over the clouds
Mark
Mark
(Laughing and ruffling her messy hair) "Why would you scream? You’re with the coolest brother in the world. Now, get ready. We need to go buy a sofa. I’m tired of sitting on the floor like a monk
As they walk away from the window, the fog outside thickens. For a second, a handprint appears on the outside of the glass—high up where no human could possibly reach. Then, it slowly slides down and vanishes
Mark grabs his car keys, but he stops at the door. He looks at the smart-lock. It’s already unlocked, even though he remembers locking it twice
Chloe
Chloe
(From the bedroom) "Did you say something, Mark?
Mark
Mark
(Staring at the lock, his face turning pale) "Nothing... just... hurry up. Let's go before the traffic gets bad
Mark
Mark
[I locked it. I know I locked it. Maybe it’s just the new technology? I’m just overthinking because of the silence]
The hallway of the 4th floor. The walls are a bit yellowish, and the air feels thicker than the 20th floor. Mark and Chloe are carrying a small table into their new unit
Mark sets the table down and wipes his face. He looks at the "4" on the door and sighs
Mark
Mark
Finally. I’m telling you, Chlo, moving down here was the best decision. That 20th floor was giving me the creeps. It was too high, too quiet... it felt like we were disconnected from the earth
Chloe
Chloe
(Nodding, looking relieved) "I agree. I hated that elevator ride. Down here on the 4th floor, I can at least hear the street dogs barking. It feels... normal. Like we’re actually part of the city again
Mark
Mark
Mark didn't want to tell her that he had a dream of the 20th-floor windows shattering. Being on the 4th floor feels like he can jump out and survive if he had to. He feels more in control here
They walk out to the balcony to look at the view. Across the street, they see a group of people gathered around a telephone pole. The pole is covered in bright yellow and white posters
Chloe
Chloe
(Squinting) "Mark, look at all those posters. Is that about the Blackwood thing?
Mark
Mark
(His face getting serious) "Yeah. It’s all over the news. Liam and his three friends—Jax, Sarah, and Chloe. They’ve been gone for two weeks now. They went into Blackwood in their SUV, and the whole car just... vanished. No tire tracks, no broken glass, nothing. It’s like the forest just erased them
Chloe
Chloe
(Shivering) "The girl has the same name as me... Chloe. That’s so weird. And did you hear about the school? Tyler from West bridge High. He was right there in the hallway between classes. One minute he was walking to his locker, and the next, he was gone. No witnesses, no CCTV footage. Just gone
Mark looks at his sister. He sees how scared she is. He realizes that even though they moved down to the 4th floor to feel safer, the 'Missing' news is moving closer to them every day
Mark
Mark
(Trying to sound like a tough big brother) "Look, Blackwood is miles away from here. And Westbridge High is on the other side of town. We are in the city center, on the 4th floor of a gated building. We are safe, kid. It’s just a string of bad luck for those people
Chloe
Chloe
But Mark, the rumors... the people at the furniture store were saying that there’s no evidence because 'It' doesn't leave any. They say if you hear a whistle in a place where no one is standing... you’re already on the list
Mark goes to close the balcony door, but he stops. For a split second, he hears a very faint, thin whistling sound coming from the empty apartment right next to theirs
Mark
Mark
[It’s just the wind. This is an old floor. The wind whistles through the pipes. That’s all it is. Don't let her see you're scared]
Mark
Mark
(Forcing a smile) "It’s just stories, Chlo. Let’s get the rest of the stuff inside. Like I said before... as long as we’re together, we’re the only people in this world who matter
Mark’s bedroom. 3:00 AM. A cold, unnatural breeze is blowing, even though the windows are shut
Mark is asleep. A dark, misty figure thin as a shadow slides through the window glass. It hovers over him, then slowly sinks into his chest like ink into water
Mark’s eyes snap open, but they are dull and glazed. The entity is now behind his eyes, pushing out his own thoughts and replacing them with a crushing, heavy sadness
Mark
Mark
[Everything is gray. Why did I think this apartment would make us happy? I’m just a failure. Chloe is trapped because of me. I need to leave. I need to stop existing so she can be free]
Mark
Mark
(Voice a flat, dead whisper) "I have to go now. I don't belong here
Mark gets out of bed. He doesn't look like himself. His shoulders are slumped, and he moves like he’s carrying a massive weight. He walks past the mirror, but he doesn't look at it. He can’t face himself
He walks to the front door of the 4th-floor apartment. He opens it quietly. He doesn't take his keys. He doesn't take his phone. He just walks out into the hallway
Mark
Mark
The voice says if I go into the dark, the pain will stop. It says I don't need to be Mark anymore
As Mark walks down the hallway, the shadows from the walls begin to reach out and wrap around his legs. He isn't fighting them. He is letting them take him
Chloe
Chloe
(From her room, waking up to the sound of the front door clicking) "Mark? Is that you? Where are you going?
Chloe runs into the living room. She sees the front door standing wide open. She runs into the hallway and sees Mark at the very end, standing by the emergency exit
Chloe
Chloe
Mark! Stop! What are you doing? It’s three in the morning!
Mark turns his head. His face is pale, and his eyes are filled with a sadness so deep it makes Chloe gasp. He looks at her, but it’s like he’s looking through her
Mark
Mark
(A broken, hollow voice) "I’m sorry, Chloe. I’m just... finished. Don't look for me
Mark steps into the shadow of the stairwell. Chloe screams and runs toward him, but when she reaches the door and flings it open, the stairwell is empty. There is no sound of footsteps. No slamming doors. Just a cold, lingering whistle
Chloe
Chloe
[He was right there. He couldn't have gone down four flights of stairs that fast. He’s gone. He just... vanished into the dark]
Chloe looks down at the floor where he was standing. His footprints are there, but they stop abruptly in the middle of the floor, as if he simply walked out of existence
The living room of the 4th-floor apartment. 3:40 AM. The silence is deafening
Chloe is on her knees in the middle of the room. Mark’s hoodie is clutched to her chest. She is shaking so hard that her teeth are chattering. The apartment that was supposed to be their "dream" now feels like a tomb
Chloe
Chloe
(Screaming into the fabric of the hoodie) "MARK! PLEASE! COME BACK! YOU PROMISED!
Chloe
Chloe
[He’s gone. He didn’t just leave... he vanished into the air. I can still smell his coffee. I can still see his laptop. But he’s not here. I’m alone. I’ve always been afraid of being alone, and now the walls are closing in]
She collapses onto her side, sobbing until she can't breathe. Her fingernails dig into the new carpet. She looks at the front door, then the hallway, then the balcony. Everywhere she looks, she sees the empty space where he should be
The entity isn't hiding anymore. It stands in the corner of the ceiling, a mass of liquid shadow, watching her spirit snap into pieces. It feeds on every sob she let's out
Chloe
Chloe
(Her voice breaking, barely a whisper now) "I can't do this... I can't stay in this world without you, Mark. It’s too big. It’s too dark
She wipes her tears with a trembling hand and stands up. Her movements are no longer frantic; they are heavy and slow. She walks toward the balcony. She takes a step, and then another, without any creak from the floor
She slides the glass door open. She goes over to the balcony and looks out, her hair being swayed by the cold winds
Chloe
Chloe
(Staring at the empty sky) "Can I take the final step?...
Chloe
Chloe
[The air is so cool tonight. It’s the only thing that feels real anymore. The road looks so soft from up here. Like a dark blanket]
Chloe
Chloe
(A small, tragic chuckle escapes her lips) "The air is so cool tonight...
She takes a look down, staring blankly at the road below. She puts her leg on the fencing. Slowly but surely, she climbs up the railings. She stands balanced on the thin metal, looking like a broken bird
Chloe
Chloe
(Closing her eyes, a final tear falling) "Bye bye....
She leans forward. She lets the gravity take the weight of her grief. She jumps off
The 4th-floor balcony and the apartment interior. 4:00 AM
The entity slowly pulls itself out of the walls, its dark shape dissolving into a cold mist. It has taken everything it wanted
The apartment suddenly becomes still. The lights stop flickering. The air turns warm. To any outsider, the room looks perfectly normal, as if the tragedy never happened
The hunger is satisfied. The 4th floor is empty. Time to find a new window
The shadow slips out through the crack in the door and vanishes into the night, leaving behind only the silence of an empty home
