Chapter 1: First Sight

The humid air of Baguio City clung to everything this January morning, turning the corridors of Educare Central School into a maze of damp uniforms and restless energy. Seventeen-year-old Kathleen Cruz pressed her back against the cool glass of the library window, sketching constellations in her notebook while waiting for her best friend to finish borrowing books.
"Hey Kath!" Princess nudged her shoulder, holding up a thick volume on Philippine folklore. "You've been staring at the courtyard for ten minutes straight. Who's got you so distracted?"
Kath's pencil froze. Below, under the shade of a massive Pine tree, a girl she’d never seen before was laughing at something her classmate had said. She had shoulder-length wavy hair the color of roasted chestnuts, warm brown eyes that crinkled at the corners, and a smile that seemed to light up the entire yard despite the gray clouds overhead. She wore the navy blue skirt and white blouse of their uniform perfectly pressed, her posture confident yet gentle.
"I don't know who she is," Kath whispered, feeling her cheeks warm. "But I think I just saw the most beautiful person in the world."
The new student was Jida Mendez, who’d transferred from Manila to live with her aunt after her parents moved abroad for work. When their paths finally crossed in their 11th-grade Creative Writing class that afternoon, Kathleen hands shook as she passed Jida a sheet of notebook paper with a doodle of a star.
"Welcome to our class. The Pine tree by the library is the best spot to eat lunch – less crowded," it read.
Jida looked up, her smile softening as she read the note. She wrote back quickly and slid it across the desk: "Thanks! I was wondering where everyone disappears to. Want to show me tomorrow?"
From that day forward, they were inseparable.
They spent lunch breaks under the Pine tree, sharing egg and fried rice from Kathleen's baon, talking about everything from their favorite bands to their dreams of studying in Manila for college.
Jida had a way of seeing the world that made even the most ordinary things feel magical – she’d point out how the morning light turned the rice fields surrounding the city into sheets of gold, or how the rain on the classroom roof sounded like a thousand tiny drums.

Chapter 2: Growing Roots

As weeks turned into months, Kathleen found herself falling deeper than she’d ever imagined possible. She’d never felt this way about anyone – not about the boys who’d asked her to school dances, not about anyone she’d met before Jida. Every touch of their hands when passing a book, every time Jida would tuck a stray strand of hair behind kathleen's ear, sent shivers down her spine.
She’d confided to Princess first, tears streaming down her face as she admitted her feelings. "What if she doesn't feel the same? What if I ruin everything?" Princess pulled her into a tight hug, her voice steady. "Then you tell her the truth. Because Jida cares about you so much – anyone can see that. And if she's worth having in your life, she won't let this change things."
Meanwhile, Jida was carrying a weight she’d never shared with anyone. Every night, she’d look at herself in the mirror, tracing the contours of her face with trembling fingers, remembering the boy she’d been just two years ago.
She’d transitioned fully before moving to Baguio, leaving behind her old name, her old life, and the constant fear of being seen as anything other than who she truly was. Her aunt was supportive one of the few family members who’d accepted her without question but Jida had sworn to herself that she’d never let anyone at school find out. Not when she’d finally found a place where she felt like she belonged, not when she’d finally met someone like Kath.
But the heart doesn’t follow rules. On a cool November evening, as they sat on the roof of Kathleen's house watching stars above the sky, Jida felt the words rising in her throat.
"Kath," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "There's something I need to tell you... something you should know before..." She trailed off, unable to finish.
Kath took her hand, squeezing it gently. "Before what? Whatever it is, we can face it together."
Jida shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. "You don't understand. What if I'm not who you think I am? What if everything you feel about me changes once you know the truth?"
"I love you," Kath said suddenly, the words tumbling out before she could stop them. "I love you, Jida.. all of you. Nothing could ever change that."
In that moment, under a sky full of stars, Jida made a decision. She would trust Kath with her secret the one she’d guarded so carefully for so long.
