Laila isn't "sick," she’s just more magical than the rest of us combined. It’s annoying, really. I have to keep casting shielding charms just to walk past her room without my hair standing on end.

Laila: AMY. I’m trying to stay calm, but the trolley witch just came by and when I reached for a Pumpkin Pasty, the sparks from my fingers turned all her Chocolate Frogs into actual, giant bullfrogs.

They’re hopping all over Carriage 3. People are screaming. I’m currently sitting on my hands and pretending I don't see anything.
Amy
I wondered why a frog just slapped against our compartment window!

Laila, your "focus" is currently making the metal rivets in the walls rattle.

The rain is actually kind of nice.

Headmistress McGonagall is watching from the high chair. She just gave me a nod. I think she’s expecting another Slytherin.

James is at the very back of the line.

Wait. Professor Avery just called his name. Her voice carries across the whole Hall like a whip. My heart just thumped, and I think the floor under the Gryffindor table just cracked.
Amy
Laila, breathe! Your eyes are starting to flicker gold. Stay with me.
Amy
Just look at James. He’s walking up. He looks like a leaf in a hurricane.
Lily
Avery hasn't even lowered the Hat yet.
Lily
She’s holding it an inch above his head and she looks fascinated. I’ve never seen her look interested in a student before.
Lily
The Hat is already whispering. It’s loud. People are leaning in. 👒

The "Superior" energy is waking up because I can feel how much James is overthinking

My magic just released all at once. Every candle in the Hall just flared bright blue for a second and then went back to normal.
Laila
He’s an eagle. I... I didn't see that coming. I thought for sure he'd be with one of us.
Amy
RAVENCLAW! James, you legend!
Amy
Look at him, Laila. He looks like a weight just fell off his shoulders. He’s grinning at the blue table like he just won the Quidditch Cup.
Lily
And Jax looks like he’s trying to calculate the distance between the Slytherin dungeons and the Ravenclaw tower.
Lily
James just sat down and tried to high-five a ghost. He missed. Naturally.

James
The Hat told me I had "too much curiosity for my own safety" and that I’d find my best answers in the clouds.
James
James: Are you okay? You look like you’re staring a hole through the Hufflepuff table.
Jax
I had a whole plan for if you were in Slytherin. Now I have to learn how to solve riddles just to visit you

Congratulations, James. You look good in blue.
James

And Laila still hasn't noticed that Jax and James are practically vibrating in sync from across the hall

We need to keep her distracted before she "Superior Beings" them into oblivion.
