Meant for Another

First Meeting

The Aldridge estate was quiet in the way only old money could afford.
High ceilings. Muted colors. Quiet luxury that didn’t need to announce itself. Every detail existed to remind guests who held power here.
James stood beside his father in the main hall, posture straight, expression calm to the point of coldness. He wore a black suit... perfectly fitted, chosen for respect rather than attraction. His presence was composed, restrained, and controlled.
This meeting was not personal. It was strategic.
The Hartwell family arrived exactly on time.
Introductions flowed smoothly, voices polite, smiles measured. These were families who had done business together for decades, alliances built on contracts rather than trust.
James listened. Spoke only when necessary. His attention remained on the conversation, on the implications of what was being discussed.
Then someone entered late.
William Hartwell.
The youngest.
He didn’t rush, didn’t apologize. His suit was expensive but worn carelessly, jacket unbuttoned, tie slightly loose as if formalities bored him. He looked like someone who had grown up indulged and learned early that rules bent for him.
The moment William’s eyes found James, he stopped.
Not visibly. Not obviously.
But something inside him did.
James Aldridge didn’t look back for long. A brief glance. Cool. Dismissive. Enough to register another guest and nothing more.
That single glance ruined William.
There was no logic to it. No reason. Just an immediate, deep certainty that settled uncomfortably in his chest.
Him
James stood like nothing could touch him. Like the world moved around him instead of through him. His voice, when he spoke, was quiet... but it carried authority that made people listen without realizing why.
William smiled when expected. Shook hands. Played the role of the charming youngest son.
No one noticed the way his gaze kept returning to James.
No one noticed the way his fingers tightened slowly at his side.
James was introduced to Jennifer Hartwell shortly after. She was graceful, intelligent, and already positioned as his future wife.
A good match.
A profitable one.
William watched from across the room, jaw tightening slightly.
**Wrong**, he thought.
Not because Jennifer was unsuitable.
But because James wasn’t meant to belong to her.
James wasn’t meant to belong to anyone yet.
And William had never wanted something this badly without understanding why.
Dinner
James sat beside Jennifer, composed, distant, already treating her like a responsibility rather than a lover. He listened to her politely, responded when required.
William barely noticed his sister.
He watched James instead... how he barely drank, how his attention sharpened when business came up, how his expression never softened.
William leaned back in his chair, smile lazy, eyes dark.
This wasn’t curiosity.
This was an obsession forming quietly, deeply, and unchecked.
And William Hartwell had never learned how to stop himself.
