The Boy Next Door
Eye contact
Three months ago, he appeared in the neighborhood — newly returned from abroad, or at least that’s what people said.
I noticed him once while crossing the road, a stranger settling into a place that wasn’t quite his yet.
After that, my eyes started searching for him without asking me first.
He doesn’t come out much, but whenever he does, it feels like coincidence keeps placing us in the same moments.
I don’t know why he’s here or how long he plans to stay.
I only know that ever since he arrived, something quietly changed in my everyday life.
Rome Quill
Wh.. What the hell
why are you shouting in my ears
Rome Quill
(Eyes still on the other side of balcony )
Kyle Rose
seriously ? Are you kidding me rome!
Kyle Rose
Do you think I am not noticing you ...what you are doing?
Rome Quill
And What do you think I am doing ?
Kyle Rose
You are continuously sighing and diving your eyes for a fucking hour of that side of the balcony ...
That house will fall down with your continuous gaze
Rome Quill
Ohh stop being dramatic (sighs)
let's just chill in my room
it's not worth it here
Kyle Rose
Wait... you really are hiding something from me
TELL ME ROME QUILL
I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU
Rome Quill
(just walked away in his room )
Kyle Rose
Seriously?
If there’s nothing out there, why are you running away?
Rome Quill
I’m not running. I just—
Kyle Rose
Nope.
Come back.
(Kyle grabs Rome’s wrist and pulls him back to the balcony)
Kyle Rose
We’ll chill here.
You said it yourself. Nothing’s there, right?
Kyle Rose
Relax. Breathe.
Or are you scared of the air now?
Rome Quill
(exhales, leans against the railing)
(Eyes drift—without permission)
Neighbour
steps out, keys in hand. Walks toward his car.
Rome Quill
(turns instinctively. Stares.)
Neighbour
(Eyebrow raised.)
Rome Quill
( flinches
Heat rushes to his face.
Looks away immediately.)
Kyle Rose
He noticed you.
Kyle Rose
Don’t lie.
He definitely noticed you.
Neighbour
(smirks
Gets in the car.
Drives off)
Kyle Rose
So.
Do you know him?
Kyle Rose
Then why are you blushing?
Rome Quill
He’s just… a neighbor.
Kyle Rose
A neighbor who didn’t exist two years ago?
Rome Quill
He moved in recently.
Kyle Rose
Recently as in?
Rome Quill
Recently as in—
He was abroad. People said he came back for his sister’s wedding.
Kyle Rose
And he never left?
Rome Quill
I don’t know.
He doesn’t come out much.
Kyle Rose
But you notice every time he does.
Kyle Rose
You don’t even know his name, do you?
Kyle Rose
And yet you keep looking.
Kyle Rose
Funny.
Nothing usually doesn’t make people look like that
Rome Quill
(grips the railing.)
(Eyes fixed straight ahead now.)
Rome Quill
Let’s go inside.
(Lights from the opposite house turn off.)
(Balcony goes quiet.)
Still Watching
In University of Melbourne
(Morning — outside campus)
Finn Smith
Bro, why do architecture students always look like they haven’t slept for three days?
Kyle Rose
(calm, amused)
Because they don’t.
Rome Quill
(distracted)
You’re both loud this early.
Finn Smith
Early? It’s almost ten. This is peak productivity time.
Kyle Rose
You’re unusually quiet today.
Kyle Rose
Yeah. Normally you’d already complain about the stairs.
Rome Quill
(shrugs)
Didn’t feel like talking.
Kyle Rose
(doesn’t push. Just nods.)
(Inside the corridor, walking toward class)
Finn Smith
Today’s RGD lecture is supposed to be intense. New syllabus, new expectations—
Rome Quill
You sound excited.
Finn Smith
(grinning)
I am excited. Fear keeps me alive.
Finn Smith
And you love me.ಠ‿ಠ
Rome Quill
(Rome’s phone vibrates.)📲
Rome Quill
(Stops walking)
Rome Quill
(Looking at screen)
…It’s from home.
Kyle Rose
(Immediately serious)
Everything okay?
Rome Quill
I don’t know yet.
Finn Smith
(Lowering voice)
Go. We’ll tell the professor.
Rome Quill
I’ll catch up online.
(Rome hesitates for half a second.)
(Rome’s house — living room)
Doctor
It’s a minor slip. Rest for a week. No strain.
Lara Quill
(Trying to smile)
I told you I was fine.
Rome Quill
You fell on the stairs
Lara Quill
And you overreacted.
Rome Quill
(doesn’t respond. He just looks relieved.)
Richard Quill
(checking his watch)
I’ll manage the trip. You stay here.
Rome Quill
I was going to anyway.
(Rome’s room — afternoon)
(Rome sits at his desk. Laptop open. Headphones on.)
Professor
(calm, steady)
Design is not about beauty first. It’s about function. Beauty comes when function is respected.
Rome Quill
( pauses his pen.)
Professor
If you don’t understand the space, don’t try to decorate it.
Rome Quill
(frowns slightly. That sentence lingers.)
Rome Quill
…That sounds familiar.
Rome Quill
(shakes his head, refocuses.)
Professor
Architecture requires patience. Rushing ruins structure.
Rome Quill
( exhales slowly.)
(Evening — Rome’s balcony)
(Rome stands quietly. No phone. No music.)
(Across the way, a car door closes. Footsteps. A figure passes through the opposite balcony area.)
(Rome watches. Nothing dramatic. Just routine.)
The other balcony light turns on. Then off.
Rome Quill
( doesn’t move.)
Later — message notification
Kyle Rose
Everything okay at home?💬
Rome Quill
Yeah. She’s fine. Just resting.💬
Kyle Rose
You missed a lot today.💬
(Kyle stares at the screen for a second before replying.)
Kyle Rose
Yeah. You always do.💬
Rome Quill
(Rome puts the phone down. Looks back toward the balcony.)
In Between
Rome Quill
(thought)
One week.
Just one week.
Lara Quill
You don’t have to push yourself today. Online classes are enough.
Rome Quill
I know. I’ll manage.
Lara Quill
(Smiles softly)
You always do.
Rome Quill
(thought)
Same time.
Every day.
(Michael steps out on his balcony, adjusting his watch.)
(Their eyes meet for a second.)
Rome Quill
(thought)
…He looked back.
Neighbour
(Looks away first.)
Rome Quill
(exhales)
Why am I like this?
[Online Class – Afternoon]
Professor
(audio only):
If you have questions, you may message privately.
Rome Quill
(Typing, then deleting)💬
Rome Quill
(thought)
Just a voice.
Nothing else.
[Group Chat – Kyle & Finn]
Finn Smith
Bro disappeared from college and from life 💀
Kyle Rose
How’s your mom?
Rome Quill
She’s okay. Doctor said rest.
Finn Smith
Good. Now come back soon, we’re bored.
Kyle Rose
(smiley)
Don’t stress yourself.
Rome Quill
I’m fine. Really.
(Kyle reads but doesn’t reply.)
Rome Quill
(steps out with headphones on.)
Neighbour
(already there, leaning against the railing.)
Music muffled. Silence loud.
Rome Quill
(thought)
He stayed.
Neighbour
(glances sideways, slow, deliberate)
Rome Quill
(thought)
Don’t look.
Don’t—
Neighbour
(smirks faintly, then turns back inside.)
Rome Quill
(thought)
Classes.
Home.
Balcony.
Repeat.
Kyle Rose
You’re quieter than usual.💬
Kyle Rose
Okay.
(typing…)
Take care.💬
[End of the Week – Morning]
Rome Quill
(stands at the balcony again.)
(Michael doesn’t come out.)
(A few seconds later, a car starts below.)
Neighbour
(appears briefly, heading out.)
Rome Quill
(already looking.)
Neighbour
( nods—barely noticeable.)
Rome Quill
(thought)
…That counts. Right?
